for some reason, indie developers all want their game to be hard as balls and really frustrating, slow and confusing. but the classic metroidvanias, like super metroid or SotN, were pretty easy games. the main enjoyment was just going around the map and using your abilities in a fun way.

they're made by autists for autists. Just look at romhacks

any hard "metroidvania" is just a s**lslike in disguise
actual metroidvanias are still easy

Changes in mechanics and controller responsiveness overtime, as well as "cred" from beating imposed challenges, ultra hard games and what not in communities have influenced devs since to aim to make their game "old thing but even more X" without thought around what's enough.

It's not just indie devs though, I recall Capcom saying, but maybe just bluffing, how dismissive reviews about MM games resulted in pointlessly brutal antics in MM&B and MMX6.

Because the grand daddy of all indie metroidvanias isn't SotN or Super Metroid, it's cave story.

Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night both descend from platformers with relatively slow horizontal movement and limited height.
Modern Metroidvanias are at liberty to borrow gameplay ideas from dedicated platformers to make the moment to moment gameplay more fun, without necessarily cutting back on the world exploration.
If you feel much more challenged by modern Metroidvanias than you did by Super Metroid, you're just worse at platforming.

which is also pretty easy, with the only challenging bit being a post-game dungeon.

Which isn't a very difficult game either barring the optional challenge at the end.

I tried Axiom Verge the other day and it was incredibly boring. No idea why people where creaming themselves over that game when it came out.

These captchas are getting obnoxious btw.

super metroid bored me to death with how easy it was

Customers pay for the slop so the devs make more slop.

To me it seems like those indie metroidvanias like Hollowsong are made for the souls audience.
>>
>>729379007
cave story isn't a metroidvania
it's very linear
>>
I think it's just the influence of souls, which was always a thing with certain games, and it's also the notion that making a metroidvania you can breeze though simply not enough, you have to make it challenging as hell
>>
I kind of hope the next 2D Metroid takes inspiration from souls like Silkhollow did.

Sonic 1 was like that too made by autists who speedran mario but it wasnt made FOR autists (sonic wasn't autism correlated at sonic 1, clueless zoomies)
>>

indie developers are inspired more by dark souls than by classic metroidvanias.

I'm of the opinion that the Souls game (Specifically Dark Souls) tainted and ruined the Action Adventure/Metroidvania Genre and tried to turn it into a "How hard can we make this game." Like its trying to prove a point.
Hollow Knight, for all its praise and fame, is the worst metroidvania I've ever played simply because of how it tries to mimic Dark Souls.
There is a fine line between difficulty and making a game feel rewarding, Hollow Knight and games like it go way to hard into the Difficulty.
Fuck you, fight me.

I didn't think Super Metroid was overly easy on the first playthrough. Granted I did it on a fuckin phone with touchscreen controls. Took like 40 tries to beat Ridley. Still, I don't think it would've been overly easy playing it normally. SotN on the other hand was bullshit easy and it's one of the main flaws with the game.
