No. HL1 didn't age very well desu
>>
HL1 has that jank and cartoony low-poly feeling with smashing SFX.
HL2 has interactive physics and more canned animations/cutscenes (why??).
If I had to absolutely pick one, HL1 it is.

>Half-Life games
>Great
Not a single game has cited them for inspiration or talked about them as having any impact. They're overhyped by the Valve Cult but normal people don't even care about them at all beyond memes.
>>
>>729378307
yes, HL1 is better, because it has a world class setting
>government black site experimenting on inter-dimensional travel and aliens
>one of the most atmospheric introductions to a game ever, just another day at the office OH N-
>endless scientist/security guard slapstick
HL2 threw that all away for exploring a slavic orwellian dump and listening to the most unfunny chick in existence
>>
>>729379185
5/10, almost got me.
Nobody cites the Bible for inspiration either.
>>
>>729378391
It's been more twenty years, anon, we can discuss these games now.
>>
>>729378307
I prefer 1 but 2 improves on many aspects. Big vehicle segments and Gravity gun sort of give you this feeling of freedom. Sadly the game suffers from boring weapon design, poor enemy variety and mid setting. Most memorable part is using bugs to fight boring soldiers... At least valve tried to spice things up.
>>
>>729378307
Yeah, I replay HL almost every year but I haven't touched HL2 since Orange Box came out. No desire to replay that game.
>>
>>729378609
>want to replay HL2
>remember THAT part
>and THAT part
>and THAT OTHER part

Seriously name a chapter or section that you would look forward to replaying.
>>
I used to be the outlier for talking about how much better HL1 was than 2, now it seems like it's a pretty common opinion. I'm all in favour of the change, but what the hell happened, where did it come from?

The only FPS games more Unc than half life is Doom and Quake. It’s one of the unccest games that exist.

Half-life: Legacy perfected Half-life
>>
HL2 is de facto the better game, but I respect HL1 more because it fundamentally changed what FPS games are. It's the most inspirational FPS game after DooM. I've beaten HL2 like 3 or 4 times, but I've beaten HL1 at least 10 times, and I still play crosspit from time to time.
>>
Yes. The vehicle sections killed the pacing of HL2. It's also very hard to kill how immersive the beginning of the first game was, going from business as usual to apocalyptic hell with aliens spawning all over and you crawling over bodies and fallen furniture to escape was just unmatched. Going around the city 17 street just didn't hit that hard at all.

HL2 has way too many exposition scenes and they got longer and more annoying, since they are unskippable.

I also think the first game has more enemy variety.
>>
>>729378376
So is the first one. Retard.

>>
>>729380160
I love the rebellion end section back in city 17. Kino
>>
>>729380391
Wtf does Unc even mean at this point beyond something being 20-30 years old? It tells you nothing about the quality of the thing beyond this.
>>
>>729381517
It's no different to calling something tranny, or indian, or zoomer or whatever. It just means you're a mouthbreathing retards incapable of articulating an opinion.
>>
>>729380943
But it is true, retard. The game barely started and we're supposed to drive this shitty boat for hours to no end. Nah fuck you and fuck Valve.
>>
>>729381729
>The vehicle sections killed the pacing of HL2
>But it is true
Not an argument. I accept your concession.
>>
>>729381853
it's a pretty common criticism of the game, but if you want to plug your ears and sing lalala, well then fuck off
>>
HL1 on hard mode is way better because it's actually tightly designed and balanced with regards to all the pickups you can find.
Many HL2 encounters are complete slop where you often get access to infinite ammo crates and have to do shit like sit around and shoot waves of enemies.
>>
>>729382053
>but if you want to plug your ears and sing lalala
There's nothing to plug my ears to. You aren't making any noise. You are completely incapable of articulating why its bad.
>it's a pretty common criticism of the game
Ah, so you're cattle who nods his head to the most upvoted opinion. Understood.
>>
>>729379173
No invasion? Bad taste
>>
>>729382083
This. I hate how Striders and gunships require more than 3 rockets while Gordon can only carry 3...
>>
>>729382083
HL2 also has dynamic enemy health/ammo drops which feels like a concession for every engagement being dogshit hitscanners shooting you from across the street like you're playing The Plutonia Experiment.
>>
>>729382470
I will try that and add it to The List. Currently going through Diffusion, which is pretty good but the AI voices are really off-putting and distracting.
>>
>>729382682
>every engagement being dogshit hitscanners shooting you from across the street
Where did this crying about hitscanners come from? It's such a low IQ take.
It is ok for a game to drain some resources from you and for you to replenish them.
>>
>>729382682
Oh yeah that's also a reason why HL1 is better than the second, the run and gun gameplay, dodging vortigaunt bolts, dodging the barf from the bullsquids, dodging the area effect from the houndeyes, is just superior to the countless hitscan enemy encounters in 2, it just gets boring constantly hiding behind a wall having to fire 50 rockets at the strider, or having to hide from helicopter machinegun, this shit isn't as entertaining as being able to stay in the open and dodge projectiles yourself.
>>
>>729378307
I played them back-to-back for the first time recently (just in case)

Kind of disappointing how little enemy variety there is in HL2 in comparison to HL1. I mean sure you can say the enemy AI is way more intelligent but my main memory of combine soldiers is them standing perfectly still next to explosive barrels like buffoons, they never ran around the environment like the HL1 soldiers/assassins.
>>
>>729382957
The heli engagements in HL1 mog the shit out of the ones in HL2
First heli in HL1 is at the end of the cliff, you're still on edge from probably falling to your death several times, you're low on ammo, you get a surplus of rockets and get to have your revenge, OR if you were frugal with your weapons you can use some 9mm/shotgun/magnum ammo. Then the next copters you have better and better gear, to the point where you can start charging your tau cannon as the copter enters the screen and immediately blast it to bits. It's so cathartic and lets you keep up the pace.

Meanwhile every copter engagement in HL2 is humping the rocket crate as the scripted event takes place and won't let you proceed until you finally put 10 rockets into the gunship, also no other weapons work because fuck you.
>>
I beat Hazardous Course 2 the other day
lots of fun
yes 1>2 simply because of mods
>>
>>729378307
From a story and pacing perspective, yes. HL2 has better shooting mechanics though.
>>
>>729378609
We don't need that milquetoast take on this board. I'm going to tell the mods to ban you.

>Half-Life: THE WORLD MACHINE
>has the HEV suit already
>has to pick it up again
Fantastic
It's just another "look, it's HL again, but I made it"
Why?

It's just a random mod I picked from the list to check out. I prefer something more unique than "it's another HL story where you start before the resonance cascade and basically just play as another pseudo Freeman"
I mean shit like Blue Shift is the same, but it's one of the reasons it's shit
>>
Valve really dropped the ball by not making HL2: Opposing force, they had everything lined up, a progress from Civil Protection -> Combine Soldier -> Combine elite, could do some experimenting with squad mechanics and more. Well, that fatfuck doesn't care about this series anyway.
>>
>>729380160
>want to replay HL
>remember THAT part
>and THAT part
>and THAT OTHER part
I mean I love both, but I just don't want to replay them
BUT I still think that HL2 is a rare example of a 10/10 game
It's just that I remember it too well and don't feel like replaying it
The episodes are amazing too (okay, EP1 is... not great, but it's okay)

>>
>>729384196
What do you think about HL2's enemies, especially their ai? I think that some criticism against HL2 is a little bit biased

>>729378846
It aged extremely well. The only bad thing about HL1 on hard difficulty is the glock. After I get the smg, I only use it for killing headcrabs when I have low ammo
>>
>>729384692
Really? I think the glock is the best weapon in HL1, it's pinpoint accurate and has good damage, headshots will kill marines in short order even on hard difficulty, and ammo is plentiful for it. I've done multiple playthroughs where I beat the game on hard difficulty using nothing except for pistol and crowbar, and I'm not just speedrunning past everything - I kill almost all enemies, except maybe a couple of copters and I have to bust out a couple other weapons for Nihilanth. Infinitely better than the SMG for sure.
>>
>>729384932
>Infinitely better than the SMG for sure.
Maybe its not very accurate, but I waste like 20-25 bullets whenever I want to kill a marine, or I use it alongside the shotgun. And then I replenish my ammo. I think that it's not about how useful it is, maybe I just that I think that it's kinda boring.
>>
>>729378307
I like HL1 more, guns feel way more satisfying

>>
>>729386434
Can't believe that people hate all these, I love Xen and Interloper so much. The only one that filters me is the Lair, but that's because I suck
>>
>>729386530
you’re going to spoil Episode Two by the end of Alyx. play in release order.
>>
>>729386689
I like xen from an atmosphere standpoint, but it’s a slog to play. you only like it because you’re stockholmed by the rest of the game
>>
>>729378307
HL1 is incredibly well paced and engaging to play throughout with very few roadblocks, i think the level with the revolving belts and some of Xen is bad but it's like less than 10% of the runtime. It's gameplay, guns and especially enemy design is simply superior to HL2. HOWEVER HL2 has the best setpieces of any game ever, It's music and world is so intresting and clearly realised, It's highs are much higher especially the episodes and it's story and characters rape HL1.
So Gameplay HL1>HL2. Everything else HL2>HL1

At least Xen and Residue Processing are pretty damn fast to get through once you learn them. On A Rail is overhated.
The only genuinely impassably fucking awful part of HL1 is Interloper
Meanwhile in HL2 you've got shit like "It really is you, isn't it?" and being stuck in Breen's office for the better part of an afternoon with no way to fast forward through that shit without glitches. Same with Highway 17 and Water Hazard, where you're gonna have long ass stretches of absolutely fucking nothing unless you wanna skip half the map with a grenade jump.

>>729388686
the citadel core section is really tedious to get through, and it’s the first hour of the whole expansion. that, as well as the narrative not progressing much, is why I think most people don’t think as warmly about EP1. I personally think it was Valve doing proper justice to the admittedly underwhelming street war sections of the base game
