Good music can make a bad game good.
Expedition 33 is proof of this.
music is vital for building a good scene and atmophere, but due to it being in the background, most people don't realize how impactful it is
>>729380002complete hogwash
>>729380002It's why I stuck with Fez.
won't polish a turd, will at best make a forgettable mid-game memorable.
>>729380002I've literally never felt this way. When I play a game and find it to be shit but the music is known to be great, my brain does some kind linking of the two things and I simply don't enjoy the music either.
>>729380002Absolutely
>>729380002Not necessarily true for a lot of games
It can make a mediocre or average game better, but it can't make up for the "bad" of a game.
It worked for Nier Replicant
Not really. I mean the game would still be memorable because the music was good but the gameplay would still be looked at as shit.
No, absolutely not.
>>729380058It's not even that; devs want spend little to no money licensing good artists and composers. There is a valid reason for this and it has to do with longevity, because if they license songs they have to renew that license after a period of time. If they don't, or if the composers refuses to renew it, the license lapses and they either have to gut the music from the game or just pull the game from the storefronts. This is why I am 1000% behind using AI music for indie titles. You can record your own instruments and punch it up using online apps like suno or audio. You then take those tracks into the audio software of your choosing to refine it. You now have songs that sound good, that you yourself control, and that you can use in perpetuity.
>>729380002Harmony of Dissonance is proof of the inverse of this.
>>729384545>audio*Udio
>>729380002I always turn it off and play my own.
>>729380002No, now post good music from bad gameshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZlYGN5W2Yg
>>729380002I dont think it can make a bad game good but it can definitely elevate a good game to being extraordinary.E33 would be just good if not for the absurdly good OST.
>>729380002No it can not. But it can make a passable game enjoyable enough.
Metal Gear Rising is the prime example of this.
There are definitely bad games with good music but like Sakurai said I don't think there are any good games with bad music.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fqTlWgfCL0
>>729380002>Good music can make a bad game good.It helps but it doesn't sell. Mediocre slop is still mediocre.
Didn't save Nier: Automata
>>729380002Good music will never make a bad game good, but it will make it hype.
>>729380057I wouldn't call it good just because of the OST but it sure kept me entertained enough while the rest shitted and farted in my face.
>>729384151sounds like the music wasnt good enough then
would be true for undertale if the story and characters weren't so bad
Mortal kombat is a fucking joke for a lot of reasons but one of the most underrated reasons it's so ass compared to other fighting games is because the music sucksOutside the obvious techno syndrome theme, there hasn't been a single memorable tune in 30 fucking years of NRS slop, even when you google mortal kombat music the only thing that pops up is the obvious one
>>729380002Great music makes a medicore game a masterpiece.
>>729385772Sakurai has pretty good takes on game design when he's not deliberately making his games worse out of spite.
>>729380002I really hate how much I have to agree. Final Fantasy series would not exist today if not for Uematsu, he and other great composers literally carry this mediocre genre. Yeah there are some above-average games, some of them are even "very good" but try playing one of these games without good music and you'll see how much this genre sucks.>>729385772I don't think there are any good games with bad musicTrue Lies for SNES/Genesis. Can't think of another one.
>>729380002I dunno if it can make it "good" but definitely bearable
>>729385889Automata's music is not good.
>>729380002Trvthnvke and this is exactly why Skyrim still feels amazing for a while before the music gets boring again
>>729380002>"story can make a bad game good"Just watch the cutscenes on youtube.>"music can make a bad game good"Just listen to the OST on youtube. The only thing youtube can never be a replacement for are the interactive elements.
>>729380148I am convinced that the Fez OST and all the remixes are an ARG that nobody has figured out yet. Disasterpeace would absolutely do something like that
>>729380002Literally every sonic game because music is the only thing carrying that turd of a franchise
>>729386772I like vidya because it can bring all these parts together and become larger than the sum of themsure, I can listen to the music on its own but without having played the game I am missing out on so much
>>729380002I feel like "the music is so great" is said about pretty much every game nowadays even when the music is kinda mid
>>729387279I fucking hate playing Tekken but I have a whole playlist of the music. I can do it just fine.
>>729387448Fighting game music works on its own because they typically have to get to the point quicker with matches lasting no more than 2-4 minutes (unless it's strive but you know)You miss out on context for other genres, like a slow flute song would be perfect in an RPG grassy area but boring as shit to listen to on its own
>>729384545This anon gets it.https://vocaroo.com/1cFOK3Zv3eOy
>>729387448sure, they're catchy as is but having the visuals in your mind and maybe certain experiences during fights can make it so much betterlike the fucking airfield from street fighter
>>729388545>Zanzibart...forgive meAbsolute kino!
>>729380002Sorry, but no amount of good music will make a game like Sonic 06 salvagable. No matter what /sthg/ zoomers will tell you.
>>729380002no,
nigguh
>>729380002the only genre music has any bearing on gameplay wise is rhythm games
only for faggots
>>729386526>Can't think of another one.RE1 Director's Cut, SF6, BG3, it has three good songs, with the Raphael theme looping into the normal dogshit battle theme for no reason, the vocal version of the character creation screen which I haven't heard in game since I've done my first run, and the elfsong tavern room theme
>>729380002Is this about skyrim?
>>729380002Objection, Sonic '06, your honor.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggqTSLydqr0
Bland or bad music can ruin an otherwise good game. I dropped Everspace 2 over its incredibly generic and shitty tracks, especially on the galactic map and procgen mission maps.
>>729385984The soundtrack has been universally acclaimed and was top of the classical billboard for months this year. Being a contrarian just makes you sound retarded anon.
>>729390248o kurwa i fucked up, let me fix bobrrr
>>729380002Payday 2 has this problem.
>>729384545>licensingLicensing music means that you take existing music and get permission to include it. The only times you should do this is if you're doing an adaptation of a movie, doing a crossover, or if it's essential for the theme you're going for (eg: Skating games including songs that are popular in the skater scene). In all other circumstances you should be commissioning original music, perfectly tailored to the situations and themes of the game, and getting the full rights to it as part of the commissioning deal. Furthermore if your game isn't live service then the vast majority of sales are going to occur at and around initial release, so the sales viability of the game 10 years from now is of little concern. What you're describing is a total non-issue.
>>729380002not really
>>729380002Inferior genetic hair
>>729380002Not really, but it can do a lot of the heavy lifting.>I'M THE FUCKING UNIVERSE
>>729380002Good music can elevate a mediocre game like Pokemon Red/Gold. It won't magically make a bad game good, because you can just listen to the soundtrack.
>>729380002good music can't save a bad game, but it can elevate a game that would otherwise peak at "okay"
>>729394013The game isn't that bad, nor the music that good, both are just unusual enough to draw notice but I wouldn't consider that elevating given no one plays this for long once the novelty wears.
>>729386580This.
>>729380002Almost. I would say that good music can vastly elevate a game, though not necessarily make a good game bad.The classic Blizzard games are a prime example of this, with Diablo and Starcraft's atmosphere being vastly enhanced by the music, but it was even more important before that. If you look at C64 and NES games, the music was instrumental to making the games memorable and successful. The C64 in particular relied on music to make its very long load times (several minutes when loading from a cassette) tolerable, and ended up being part of the experience.
>>729386526>I don't think there are any good games with bad musicDQ XI
>>729390924You are bad at understanding the english language. The OST is good but it does not save the rest of the game being a burning trashcan.
>>729386580>>729394334Completely subjective. I basedfaced at the music transitions during the credits.
>god tier OST turns an already great game into a must-play
>>729394563>shitskin having the audacity to talk about someones mastery of the English languagefucking kek. you lost btw.
>>729394701Damn you are extremely defensive, like a teenage girl.
>>729380002disagree
>>729380002It can make a bad game more bearable, and a good game, great. Fire Emblem: Shadows of Valentia has absolutely amazing presentation and a great OST wasted on a remake that ports over a lot of the most maligned shit in the series from the NES original, especially the fucking maps. I love the OST for it, but I cannot in good faith call it a good game.
>>729394781it's crazy how bad some of those maps are, i like almost everything about the game but i would never touch that game again
