Retro Studios confirms that Metroid Prime 4’s desert section was inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Now that BotW has ruined both Mario Kart as well as Metroid, should Nintendo try to move beyond (heh) it and try to come up with other sources of inspiration?
>>
i'm sick of open world games. give me more linear curated kino. i'd have liked dkb a bit more if it wasn't so free form.
>>
breath of the DEI ld strikes again!
>>
>>729380735
But I was explicitly told by Nintendo fans that it wasn’t inspired by BotW
>>
>>729380735
Open world works well in certain contexts. I still think open world works well for zelda, they just need to stop reusing content and create better dungeons. There are plenty of good open world racing games(burnout paradise, midnight clud, forza horizon.) Mario kart being shit isn't because it's open world, it's because nintendo don't know how to design open world games well.
>>
>>729380735
this whole situation is maddening

But that quote doesn't say it was inspired by it though, does no one here read?

What big Nintendo game do they have left to ruin with open world?
>>
>>729384252
3D Mario. Bowser's Fury being a tech demo was all but a guarantee that it's next.
>>
>>729380735
who the fuck was asking for open-world metroid? It was obviously widely considered a bad idea from the get go. where do they find these niggers?
>>
>>729380735
it's impressive they are too stupid to understand how it actually is very easy design wise to make an open world with areas that open through unlockable powers. even chat gpt could make a design outline for this. actually it's not just impressive it's despicable.
>>
Is BotW or Skyrim to blame for open world sloppa? I at least feel like Skyrim has a little more places to explore.
>>
>however Metroids style of gameplay is not compatible with the open world style of botw, so we went in another direction
Shame /v/ can’t even read
>>
>>729384252
Another Zelda game in the style of Breath of the Wild for Switch 2
>>
>>729384252
I wanted to say Pikmin but that could actually go really fucking hard and basically be a gigantic Metroidvania. So Fire Emblem.
>>
>>729387460
>that’s why we designed a bike for you to move around the open areas
Can you read nigga?
>>
>>729388039
>the only game to ever have a faster means of traveling around a hub(which isn’t in Botw)was breath of the wild
Do you know how stupid you sound? Ever played ocarina?
>>
>>729384252
Let's see. They could have done it with Kirby but didn't. That leaves... Fire emblem, starfox, and earthbound. Anything else I'm missing? Wario I guess.
>>
>>729388285
mainline Mario, duh
>>
>>729388245
>fans began requesting we make an open world Metroid after BotW
>to satisfy those fans we created the desert section
WOWWWWW I CANT BELIEVE THESE SNOYS ARE SAYING THEYRE INSPIRED BY BOTW
>>
>>72938073
>we saw a lot of comments on the internet
Nintendo needs to learn to say no to their audience if they ask the people what they want, and the people give them bad ideas.
Also, to learn to read between the lines, and understand what people are actually asking for, if they might not mean exactly what they are saying, but are close to saying something worthwhile.
But mostly to learn to say no to bad ideas.

And yes this is a fairly new problem. Seems to be a problem at least since post 2017, and maybe since Iwata passing.
>>
>>729385292
I am not sure these fans actually existed or if they are trying to say "Breath of the Wild made a lot of money, so we assume fans wanted an Open World Metroid"
>>
>>729388285
Earthbound? Don't make me laugh fool
>>
>>729387460
he said they made the desert as a compromise for people who wanted open world exploration you retard
>>
>>729380735
I sincerely doubt the higher up at Nintendo points a gun at all their studios and say "make everything like BOTW". This seems like retro trying to shift the blame for their incompetence.
>>
>>729391348
From the interviews and stuff coming out, apparently the desert was something Retro inherited from Bamco, and was Tanabe's idea.
But inheriting a dysfunctional prototype and failing to make it work is still no excuse for how fucking lazy the game is in other areas.

Like the fucking naming conventions for things, and the story for the game in general.
Watch as I come up with, off the top of my head, cooler shit:

Ice Belt? rename that area "Xenthios"
Flare Pool? rename that "Neryoon"

bumping real quick
>>
>>729393327

Great mine? "Wuthion Pits"
Volt Forge? "Muraxus Foundry"
Fury Green? "Vegailis Jungle"
Green Energy? "Neev Fluid"

Now.
These aren't good names, but I spent about 10 minutes and came up with better names than "Fury Green" and "Ice Belt".
This is a series where areas have names lyke "Phendrana", "Bryyo", "Torvus Bog", "Magmoor Caverns" and so on. This shit at least sounds cool and sci-fi and Metroidy, and if you put just 10 minutes of thought into this you can come up with better names than "Great Mine" and "Green Energy".

And the fucking story
The Lamorn are psychics who can use there psychic abilities to control psychic nanotechnology, which explains all their sleek hyper advanced architecture
Then Lamorn created a motorcycle
It was the best motorcycle ever
Then they created a factory to endlessly produce motorcycles
This caused some funny deforestation, so then they found Green Energy, which they sprayed over the whole fucking planet to fix the environment
They also, simultaneously, implanted the non-psychics in their population with crystals that make them psychic
The green fluid affected the Lamorn with psychic crystal implants, turning them into Grievers
And that was the tragic tale of the Lamorn

This is so fucking stupid on so many levels
They're presented as these near godlike beings at the beginning of the game, with control over time and space, advanced nanomachines that respond to their psychic impulses, and you're assuming they're a deeply spiritual civilization like the Chozo or the Luminoth, who are trying to live in harmony with nature.
Then you find out they got obsessed with motorcycles to the point of deforestation and sprayed the planet with an unknown, untested chemical to try and fix their problem.

Give me 30 minutes and I could come up with a better premise.
There's no excuse for the game to be as bad as it is.
Retro had 5 years with this game.
It takes a few hours to get a few pages of good story.

applying the open world aspect to Mario Kart was a decent idea, the implementation just sucked and Nintendo's autism about player choice made everything 10 times worse. Now Metroid as a series is completely opposed to an open world design and it was "Beyond" stupid to try it at all. Quite transparently "thing worked here so lets crowbar thing in everywhere" mentality
>>
>>729380735
>perhaps
>botw is why people like open world games
This has nothing to do with Prime 4
>>
>>729394801
Now that we have it straight from the horse's mouth that BotW did in fact play a role in influencing Prime 4's crappy design, Switchfags have to pretend Prime 4 is the best game Nintendo has ever made and that it "le filtered" everyone who was disappointed by it.
>>
>>729395614
This comes from the famitsu interview where they answer questions about the game's development.
Now explain to me why you have bad reading comprehension.
>>
>>729380735
>the fans wanted Botw
>so we compromised and gave them Oot
damn it, I still want that open world Metroid whether you can figure it out or someone else has to, Retro
>>
>>729389431
yeah, if they don't bother with a physics sandbox, then what is the point. Botw IS its physics.
>>
>>729395694
>perhaps Botw is why people like open world
>we cannot figure out how to make it work
>we compromised and gave people a hubworld as a concession
big L for Retro, imagine being too inept to make open world Metroid work, imagine hearing people want it and giving them nothing remotely comparable to what they want
>>
>>729388390
There's no way you faggots can convince me Mario Odyssey is not open world
>But it's broken up into different planets
Retarded.
>>
>>729395798
The problem is, I wouldn't want or need that in a Metroid game.
>>
You guys notice how Prime 4 ragebait threads were finally going down until this interview and now they're (Indians) spamming the shit again
>>
>>729397093
I'm noticing, yea.
Desperate attempts to influence public opinion. Tale as old as time yadda yadda yadda
>>
Crazy how Prime 4 is now the poster child for troubled development. There's some cool stuff in it buried beneath conflicting visions and absolutely baffling design decisions.

All open world catastrophes (and a few others) can be traced back to the success of Oblivion. It might be only for a specific definition, but I consider it the worst game ever made because of its consequences (and it being shit).

Retro devs confirmed for literally never playing a game in their fucking lives, holy fuck
It's geniunely insane to me that people this retarded get to make decisions
"Gee, let's take inspiration from the worst part of a 25 year old game from another genre, what could go wrong"
NIGGERMAN SAVE ME
>>
>>729399275
I'm becoming convinced nobody with any power, or possibly nobody at all at current Retro has actually played the Metroid Prime games or any of the Metroid games.
There are things Metroid Prime 4 would have done, and things they definitely wouldn't have done, if they had actually played them.
>>
>>729388285
All I want is a Star Fox game that's basically just Mass Effect with more dogfighting. On-rails sections are used for more cinematic vistas, you can go to every planet in the Lylat System with their own little open world sections, and you can hire crew members from throughout the franchise with your main hub being the Great Fox. And yes there should also be relationship mechanics.
>>
>>729397756
stalker isn't open world
>>

Old JRPGs were basically open world already, not that it matters since Itoi said he's not coming back to make a new one and he's almost 80.
>>
>>729384252
I fully expect Splatoon Raiders is going to turn out to just be an open world spinoff of the single player levels nobody liked anyways.

And before you say anything, yes Splatoon is big now in Japan.
