I’m not an arcade guy
I like story and lore in video games. But if a game requires me to read paragraphs every 10 12 minutes, then why not just grab a (pre 2008) book and read it under a blanket?

It’s probably better written than the game, and I can actually immerse myself in the scene instead of sitting in a gaming chair, staring at a screen, and wondering if any of this will ever come into play.

Because it's options for different people who value story and the world more than you do. You can play a game like Fallout, speed through, only pay attention to the dialogue said to you, finish the game and be done and satisfied. Other players enjoy exploring old ruins, reading terminals written by 250 year old dead men, getting immersed in the story.
