How do I get into this genre?

You start with the founding father of the Hebevania genre.
>>
Can we start calling them Search Action too? Castlevania is some netflix anime shit and as of Prime 4, Metroid is now a AAA "Focus, M" type game. It was fine to compare these games to Castlevania and Metroid when that meant "Symphony of the Night" and "Super Metroid", but now it's confusing as shit and probably not even desirable to be associated with.
>>
play hollow knight. ignore the rest
>>
>>729391886
Super Metroid
>>
>>729391916

one of these two

Faxanadu

Unc still trying to make that stick.
They're Hollow-likes
>>

hmmmm, nyo.

>genres name is a mashup of two games
bro...
>>
Metroid sucks. We need to change the genre name to Castlevanialike.
>>
>>729391886
Metroid on NES. Then Simon's Quest, Rondo of Blood, Metroid 2 and Adventure of Link. Only then can you truly appreciate and understand Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night, which themselves are the games that set the formula of the genre. From there you can play anything.
>>729392271
I can't condone Search Action because it sounds very awkward in English. I'd prefer we just use the Japanese term without translating it. "Adventure platformer" is what I personally call it, but there must be a better genre name out there somewhere.
>>
>>729392271
It is a fucking retarded term. The genre was created in the west and not Japan, so it's absurd to name the genre after two jap games.
>>
>>729392768
What platforming games with permanent power-ups that expand your platforming abilities and allow you to reach more areas of a single continuous world, were developed in the West before Metroid?
>>
Why would someone want to "Get into" a genre or series that they don't care enough about to just jump into?
>>
super metoid or symphony of the night are the best place to start
cave story, axiom verge, hollow night, ori, are all great as well
'metroidvania' is still a terrible name and i hate it almost as much as 'character action'
>>
>>729392768
>so it's absurd to name the genre after the game franchises that established the genre
You want them to be called Hollow Knight-likes don't you? You little faggot
>>

Super Metroid
Silksong
Rabi-Ribi
La Mulana 2

These are the absolute best the genre has to offer

Usually when you get into a genre you;re unfamiliar with there's a "gateway drug" or so to say, this is also a thing /mu/ & /tv/ and even /a/ abides with, Think about the first video game that got you into the hobby, now think about a person who's never touch one in their life saying they, wanna know what the fuss is all about, are you gonna make them play something esoteric first? or something that;s gonna try and ease them in? You're not gonna tell your friend to watch Dragon Ball Evolution if they wanna get into DBZ are you?

I would assume this was also the inspiration for Faxanadu.

No, you're missing the point. They actually did call them that before, but apparently you were unaware of that.
>>
>>729391886
Have you tried playing them?
That sounds like a good start.
>>
>>729391886
Start with Hollow Knight, then play Silksong. That's it. Everything else is vastly inferior

>>
>>729392271
Yeah, we're not calling every FPS a doom clone either.
I guess defining characteristics would be that it doesn't have a real hub or level select, but instead uses a single contiguous level that the player gains more access to by collecting things.
So clearly the correct term is "Libra Expander Agent" game
>>
>>729391886
You start at the start (Pitfall II) and you play in release order until you get to Metroid Zero Mission.
Then you stop.

1. Play Super Metroid
2. Play Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
You're done. You've already experienced the best the genre has to offer.
>>
>>729393795
And metroidvania describes metroidvanias
>>
why not castleroid
>>
>>729395514
they're casual shit and Silksong mogs them utterly
>>
>>729393281
>Usually when you get into a genre you;re unfamiliar with there's a "gateway drug" or so to say
That happens because you see the "gateway drug" and think "That looks fun" or "I wonder what that's like" and decide to try it. The next question then is "Where can I get more" or "What else is there", but not "How can I get in", since you're already in; you already got past the "gate".
If OP wants to "get into" the genre, then it's probably because he saw a game in the genre and thought it looked interesting, so why not start there? That's the part that puzzles me.

>>729394158
That would've made more sense than including Halo, which was consoleslop made long after FPS games were established as something more than Doom clones. The point is that FPS games were initially named after Doom (rather than Wolf3D for whatever reason), rather than being described as what they are.
>>729394247
Retard.
>>

But they weren't called "Doom", were they dummy?
"Dude this new Doom game came out called Turok"
>>
>>729392537
Hollow-likes are a sub-genre. Fatal Claw is a Hollow-like.
>>
>>729397220
And metroidvanias aren't called metroid or castlevania, they're called metroidvanias.
>>

>>
>>729395792
Silksong has a shit OST, the areas are chore to explore and despite being more combat focused it only has ONE(1) good boss fight in Carmelita
>>
what does non linear mean in this context? like if you have to follow a path to get an item to unlock the next part of the path to repeat how is that not linear? none of the metroid games i played had options at the start, you get the missile upgrade, you can now open the missile doors, now you need the ball upgrade to continue. theres no other options this is the path everyone has to taken as intended by the game, isnt this linear?
>>
NEStlevania is better than SotN-style explorationslop.

So, the same focus as not just action-adventure games, but regular adventure games as well? Reading what people who clearly don't play many video games write about video games as if they know what they're talking about, has made me realize that most "experts" are fucking retarded
