I've drawn more this year than I did last year, which in itself is a good improvement. It's much easier to see my own mistakes, and my process has seen a lot of refinement. I hope that I can say the same or better next year too.

I sorta want to learn to draw more but I don't know if I should invest in a drawing tablet or something.
It just seems easier to fix mistakes that way over pencil/paper.
>>
>>729414003
It's not that much of an investment, you can get pretty cheap ones. You probably waste more money than the price of a beginner-friendly drawpad just on junk food every week.
You should still practice drawing on paper regardless.
>>
>>729414003
>It just seems easier to fix mistakes that way over pencil/paper.
Digital is the way to go. If you already have a tablet, just use that + a tablet pen
>>
>>729414003
It's better to start physical BECAUSE fixing mistakes is kind of a pain in the ass. You'll thank yourself for getting a feel for how to draw without having to rely on constant ctrl-Z, even if having ctrl-Z once you know what you're doing fucking owns.
>>
>>729414003
Draw enough on paper that you find it a significant timesink as a hobby to justify. I've spent about $700 on my tablet and never made money off of drawings, but I put so many hours into drawing for myself that the purchase was worth it.
>>
>>729414281
>>729414667
I mean, I can draw physically, its just I tend to have 10 pages of scribbles and then 1 page of anything worth a damn.
Plus its a pain in the ass getting decent pictures for critique and there hits a point where if I'm buying a scanner feels like I may as well just by a drawing tablet.

>>729414915
Getting a tablet really isn't about if you're good or not. It's about how much you draw, if it's something you can spend several hours a day doing and having fun with it then it's absolutely worth it. But, if you don't draw very much, you're going to feel pressured making your expensive new toy worth it, only to burn out and possibly quit completely.
>>
>>729411329
Can we see some work? This year has been incredibly hard for me, but people still say they like what I'm doing, so even though I'm failing in my eyes, I guess I'm still doing some good.

Just remember that as long as one person enjoys your art it's worth it. Hopefully that person is you, but if it's not, there'll be someone else.

>>729411645
>It's going the opposite way for me by the way.
We can tell. Take some antacid for that sour attitude you've got and you'll probably find it's at least a little easier to be productive.
>>
>>729415492
Drawing tablets are NOT expensive. You don't have to buy a cintiq just to doodle. There's no way you can't afford to impulse buy a cheap beginner pad with basically no commitment unless you're living in Uganda.
>>
>>729414915
every kino artist you see sits upon a mountain of schizo scribbles. yes, even the badass japanese animators. it's normal. you get better the more you do it and if you've shown any improvement at any point then you have the chromosomes required for art
and drawing pads aren't terribly expensive, i've used a $20 one for years and it's served me well. it's an investment that's worth it.

>Just remember that as long as one person enjoys your art it's worth it.
Definitely right about that. You at least brought something worthwhile in the world with that. And if it's yourself, then that's good too. Personally, I go through phases. I like it a little before I post it, dislike it after it's been up for a few hours and I start to notice issues, and eventually I come to accept the art for what it is: a piece of myself and my sentiments at the time

>I really admire the more simple, but effective, rendering styles
Yeah, same. The pro level guys can communicate so much with their art with just a few expertly placed lines/shades/tints. Anime shows and manga are usually a good example of that. Being able to render complex pieces is also something to strive for. Plenty of highly skilled illustrators go that route.
>You can see that I tend to over-render shit. I don't know how not to. I get carried away. This helps remind me not to go so nuts.

Rat brains typically consist of applesauce so that checks out. She's a real cutie. Also fucking love the glaceon gal and your use of rougher lines this time. I remember you mentioning how textured lines don't look enjoyable to use (forever ago I think) so its cool to see you trying them out! You're too kind but personally I don't think that day would be too far off if you set some time aside for it, though it was admittedly very hard to "stop caring" when I began exaggerating things so much. The way I started was drawing googly eyes and big mouths over my stuff to try and make myself laugh. The more absurd the better. I think Photonoko was a good inspiration for that with their silly alts so definitely check those out. I swear some expressions give me imposter-syndrome kind of vibes like the bottom right one. I referenced nothing but it feels heavily lifted from something and I can't place it. Anyways I'm always happy to provide encouragement when I can even if the joy is often fleeting as those little bits of positivity can be all the difference sometimes, I feel.

How the hell are you actually supposed to use Loomis?
It says multiple times to do your own practices and not just draw balding old men from the book, but how much are you supposed to draw your own stuff?
How did YOU use it to get better?

I just want to get out the /beg/ hell
>>
>>729426290
Loomis is a bit of a scam to be honest. It's never fucking helped me, ever. I think you should learn your own way of deconstructing heads into shapes YOU can easily understand, so that you can make a guide system that works for you.

Try tracing some drawings, and then drawing them again without reference. Make note of your shortcomings, and try and fix them. Eventually you'll have your own way of doing things.
If you do need a guide, a simple sphere divided into four equal pieces works just as well to keep things aligned. Don't feel compelled to use Loomis.
>>
>>729426290
i'm sure it's helped some people but i never needed it
literally just draw and keep doing it consistently it's basically what the book tells you to do anyway

>>729426929
I think the two most important things you can learn for drawing are learning forms (for example, take any image, and try drawing contour lines around the forms; the lines that define the form, as if it were a wireframe render); and when you're drawing, pay attention to symmetry. Measure your arms and legs and make sure they're the same size when they should be (proportions don't matter as much; weird proportions can be more easily spotted and fixed during the sketch phase). Make sure your eyes are at the same position and the same size. Stuff like that.

If you practice and follow those two things, you'll be able to do tons of shit. Anything you want. Best of all, because those two things are SO fundamental, even if your pic isn't great, it won't look uncanny or disgusting, just in need of refinement. That's relatively easy to do.

And also, seek critique early. It's much easier to fix a sketch than something already rendered.

>(for example, take any image, and try drawing contour lines around the forms; the lines that define the form, as if it were a wireframe render);
I'm currently learning that stage but I've doing just heads so far

>And also, seek critique early. It's much easier to fix a sketch than something already rendered
Also gonna keep that in mind

Also thanks for the post, pretty helpful stuff

Every tip I give is a lesson I learned by being a bit of a retard.
I only hope my retardation helps others avoid the same fate.

comparing yourself to other artists is always gonna hurt, just do your best and try to have fun. and i really mean that, grinding fundies and leaving no time for doodles can be soul crushing. try to use your waifu or husbando or autistic thing you personally love as a muse, keep doing it, and you'll pick up more things along the way - i believe in you anon!

So I should prioritize what i like than grinding to get good, got it. I should really spend more time sketching and doodling

Your waifu would be so happy to see you learning to draw for her.
There's no shame in the learning process.

Art is like learning a language, anon. Art books are all just people talking about their mental though process while they speak through a pencil. When you read Loomis, pay less attention to copying exactly what Loomis does and instead ask yourself what the reasoning is behind what he's doing, and ask yourself stuff like "Would it help me to think about it like this? If so, why aren't I doing it?"
