PC games used to be available on discs in big boxes.

I miss that era. Threw my boxes into trash too.

It's a pity that the lack of popularity of Blu-ray Disc drives, and that the popularisation of account-based DRM killed physical copies.

Interesting how the make and size of PC game / software boxes shrank parallel to the general SOUL of vidya as a whole.
Semi-jokes aside, I find nearly no Vidya Machine is more fun to collect than Big Box PC.

Yeah, and now everything has to be subject to Steam, including what's even allowed to be in your game. At least the disc manufacturers weren't censoring your games. How ridiculous is it that a Vita game like Tokyo Clanpool has to resort to a physical disc on PC because it can't find a storefront in 2025?

I want to bring back physical PC games but we need a medium better than blu-ray installs. Thought about cartridge SSDs but I hear they die if you don't power them in once in a while.

Yes. Ditto for flash drives, of course. Optical media truly is the best format for massive distribution.

And I was thinking about a plug and play medium with no installation needed to play games. That and I heard Sony is going to end production of blu-rays soon. I'd really like a new format.
>>
People have been creating replicas of the boxes and selling them on etsy/ebay for a few years now.

Because paying $300 for a fucking box with HL1 on it is dumb as fuck.

I'm not familiar with this, how much are they normally? They better be cheap as you can often buy the originals for 20-50 bucks.

Pressing plants are still operative.
Besides, all standard Blu-ray patents will expire in 2029, with most of them expiring in 2026.
Blu-ray optical drives are still being made.

"Uncboxing" could be a cool idea for a youtube channel. Showing the insides of old vidya cases.

And yet they have the nerve to charge us more.

You now remember the limited activation DRM. Install a game, say five times and it becomes bricked forever.

How many of them ended up with limits NOT being removed?
They're still shit anyway because they require to phone home.

Yes, thankfully that's a thing that happened, but when the games were new there was no way of knowing if they were going to patch it or not.

That was the last physical EQ I bought (just bought expansions through the launcher) besides EQOA (bought EQ2 through the launcher as well).
