Some forms have a special attack of some sort, and you can pick up items to use here and there, but usually you're just 'Fight'ing. Generally, you are either stronger than your opponent and floor them, or you are weaker and get floored yourself, and have to grind a bit on weaker enemies to get enough EVO Genes to evolve....basically exactly like the SNES version, I suppose. Just in a JRPG environment.

The game decides what to evolve you into from your stat distribution. It's more involved in the SNES 2D sidescroller pictured in the OP, since you get to pick different body parts from a set list to evolve, with better parts costing more XP. Instead of "cell" and "creature" stages like in Spore, you go from fish, to amphibian, to reptile/dino, to mammal.

Leap does increase Bite's damage compared to the fight command, but I could have just bitten them twice. Not worth it. Beating retro PC games is like taking a basic math test.
Another annoying thing is that enemy defend command seems to stack, which means my attacks lose potency every turn they do it, which punishes me for abusing the recovery skill.
