it's really kind of confusing. They were humans who got sucked into a literal game called Battletoads and transformed into toad forms by Silas Volkmire, but then they can apparently leave the game world and fly around space and meet the Double Dragons?

I don't get why that guy has a stage in the game but is nowhere to be found. Isn't he the main villain? He's in none of them. The arcade game is the only one without the Dark Queen as the boss and that one just has her henchman Robo Manus as the boss. For some fucking reason.

He comes up in Battlemaniacs, but Rare ultimately didn't go with that plot from the Battletoads bible for the video games. In the games the Battletoads are just the Battletoads, and Volkmire is just a side villain who's gimmick is creating VR worlds. He is referenced in the NES game too in one of the level names.

There was also that pilot episode for a scrapped cartoon, where the toads are high school kids who were given potions from Professor T. Bird that allow them to transform into the Battletoads.
