I got this on sale. I don't know what I'm doing yet in combat. I mostly just auto everything and that works. I put thought into the first team I made, but it hasn't really mattered so far. I just got the ability to bust through walls like the Kool-Aid man.
And I want that hussy nun to stay away from my moe evil witch.

Iirc (which I probably don't) the characters in your team don't super matter as long as they're properly matched with their weapons and vanguard/rearguard positions. At least in the beginning it's just about levels... unless you have a team full of supports for no reason I guess

I don't remember doing much except auto battle in that game but I do remember enjoying the dungeon designs.

It has no dungeon design variety and its story was rushed/unfinished. HOWEVER, the gameplay is amazing and probably the best a dungeon crawler RPG has to offer, it's such a massive improvement from the first game.

Early game is mostly just levels and having a decent mix of rear and vanguard. Most of the strategy will be which covens you use. Eventually you'll want to be more intentional with your puppet creation but it's pretty straightforward and will mostly just be getting appropriate bodies to fill out covens. The only way you can theoretically permanently fuck up a character is having an odd lucky number (since it can't be changed on Soul Transfer) which only matters if you want to do end game grinding for Soul Clarity. I beat the post game without even needing to grind to max soul clarity since the amount I got just by Soul Transferring for cross class skills a few times was enough.

Layouts are serviceable, sometimes annoyingly complex.
What I mean is that the midgame dungeons are nearly all recolored, more boring versions of the first. There are also no subplots inside the dungeons and they all exist to serve the main story.

About the only thing that matters for you right now is to keep your tanks on the right side of the screen line up as enemy attacks tend to start right and go left.
