He killed me first attempt because I didn't expect him and the dogs to just be right there in front of you and start attacking immediately. It's not a difficult boss though. The dogs are annoying but they go down fast if you can separate them from the demon using the stairs. The demon itself isn't hard to dodge, like most DS1 bosses, but does do a lot of damage.
