Surpassed? Regressed.

Correct.

In many ways, the ps1 was the successor to the SNES. A lot of PS1 games from 94, 95, and 96 even look like SNES games, but kinda like they're on steroids because of the amount of mode 7 coolness.

Love me ps1, but i don't think it quite surpasses the SNES, but it's still an awesome console with an amazing library.

NES, SNES, PS1
This is the way...

Imagine if we got ULTRA NINTENDO instead of Ultra64.
~25MHz 68K
Uprated version of the SNES PPU, with 4MiB SRAM
16MB main system ram + 128MB slow audio ram

I've seen some delusional fanboy takes but that one's taking the cake for a while.

I think it both failed to surpass the NES and was surpassed by the PS2.

No. Not even close to the SNES and even worse than the N64 unless you don't like video games.
>>
>>729427668
I wonder how many people still haven't played all those JRPGs that were never localized originally.

Nintendo fanboyism at its finest.
>>
>>729427668
super mario world is the only snes title I can think of. nes and n64 are just far more memorable to me
>>
>>729433105
JRPGs were good value back in the day if you were an anime fan on a budget. A 40 hour game for $40-$50 was way better value than the equivalent VHS tapes needed to get to that many episodes in length. People also cry "no gameplay" but the idea that you can't get game over in these games or that you have to grind is propagated by people that don't fucking play them or have literally only played like Pokemon. It's bullshit. You have to pay attention in Final Fantasy Tactics, you have to have good reflexes in Legend of Dragoon, you've got fun puzzles in Wild Arms, you have to experiment with different equips in FFIX, etc.

That's not PS1. Mode 7 is a function of the SNES.

Certainly surpassed it in sales and amount of games. I still prefer the SNES for nostalgia, but I accept that PS1 took all the best things about SNES like JRPG and left pretty much only Nintendo first party on 64 (whcih admitedly were excellent games).
>>
>>729431831
It makes sense in terms of innovation and soul.
SNES was an era of sequel refinement.
PS1 is closer to the NES in terms of dev creativity.
Except you had 2D/3D to choose from, a blank canvas for what 3D would even be, and 100 times more data storage than last gen cartridge consoles to work with.
>>
>>729433551
PS1 doesn't really have a big amount of platformers, that's a 4th gen expertise.
Yeah you have a few, but for each good platformer on PS1 you have at least 3 on SNES.
Also, SNES having carts means no loading times.
