if by ranked you mean taking away player agency then i agree. but ranked has been in games for a long time.
when players could host their own servers with their own rules you might play a game for 10 years without ever seeing a ranked match.

What I find obnoxious is the periodic reset model most ranked modes have. I don't see why they don't just use a system like Counter-Strike where the ranks aren't reset except for your own rank in case of inactivity.

Ranked modes would be ok if your rating never actually appeared. It's supposed to be for finding a fair game while not matching you with fresh installs, not making a extrinsic number go up. Obsession with "climbing the ladder" is a forced meme abused by companies to get people addicted and only leads to rage.
