HROT was the best shooter since Blood, let that sink in. The only ones that came close were Dusk and Cultic but both fall short for reasons I won't elaborate. Why is the genre so stale rn?
cause ur taste is wack if u thing hrot is worth shit.go play incision
>>729438824>incision>throws upnice slop
>Why is the genre so stale rn?>posts a generic ass shooter that gets sales solely on promising to be a generic ass shooter from the past >DUSK>literally nothing but another generic ass corridor shooter that sold entirely based on the premise on being simple and generic Yeah what could it be? Why could it possibly be so stale?Doom Eternal tried to save your asses but you started crying like babies the moment you had to do more than just press W+mb1
ion fury >>> hrotand i love hrottheres a lot of good fps games, you just have some strange taste
>>729439449some of my favs besides ion furyforgive me fathernightmare reaperpostal brain dmg project warlock 1 and 2 boltgunviscerafestselacoand morebut those come to mind rn, the indie FPS scene is doing fine imo, blood is an unfair comparison as blood is like a 9.5/10 game
>>729437857HROT is awesome because it's actually optimized and built from scratch like an old school PC game.
>>729439914yeah gotta respect the dev for that, but thats really uncommon, even oldschool FPS 90% of em were on build, doom, or quake engine
>>729439914>built from scratch like an old school PC gameIt's not even hard to do that. Fucking morons think anything is impressive when shovelware bargain bin games did the same thing back in the early 2000s. I honestly don't give a shit if it's running on godot, unity or unreal at all because the important part is just making a good game. Perhaps it might matter for building a good modding platform but the same thing is likely achievable on those engines too.Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking this dev because i did play Legie back in the day but jesus christ just shut up you pretentious queer. You sound like those idiots like Phil Fish and Johnathan Blow that pretended everything they did with coding was magical.
>>729441913Do you even code or are you just talking out of your ass? Building your own engine is super hard, these days people that can do that for complex games are working on stuff like palantir for 20x more money than in gaming
>>729441971>Building your own engine is super hardPeople built their own engines to cram shit out the door all the time on games that weren't even worth a damn and had no effort put into them. You didn't even game on PCs back in the early to mid 2000s. Your experience with this medium is limited.
FPS games live and die by their level design (enemy placement, combinations of enemies present, geometry of the environment and it's complexity). And level design straight up died somewhere between 00s and 10s, not just in FPS games but in general.
>>729437857I like Hrot. My favorites of recent vintage are still Amid Evil and Dusk, though. Cultic is alright but I'm tired of horror theming in FPS games. I haven't played Selaco yet.
>>729441971You've mistaken why people are using these very engines in the first place. Why did so many engines exist on lots of games early 2000s PC games? why were self made engines so easily disposable for any small project? generally because these games were not going to consoles or even mobiles and were stuck on one platform. It might be considered 'old school' now but it being an older method doesn't necessarily equate to effort or skill. Most of these indie devs know they can't get by without porting their shit everywhere. Misunderstanding of everything and not understanding convenience.
>>729439630>nightmare reaperNightmare Reaper is fun at first but around chapter 3 it kind of starts going to shit and by chapter 4 it just kind of goes to shit. A lot of it has to do with the kind of bullshit enemies introduced later on. It feels like it becomes less about dodging projectiles and attacks and more about just trying to be able to grab health as quick as possible to tank your way through nearly unavoidable attacks. Also the later weapon room obstacle courses can be absolute fucking bullshit.
>>729439914>built from scratch like an old school PC gameNigger most old school first person shooters were just built off either the various idtech engines or the build engine.
>>729437857In a way this game was so shit. Like just think how simple the enemies and weapons are. And the map is just some blocks with the same brown color palette. But it was still FUN.... that really tells a lot about our society.
>Dusk [...] fall(s) short for reasons I won't elaboratenice bait OP. I really loved DUSK's music. Level design was also tight, in my opinion. It really didn't overstay its welcome and I honestly wish that we could get more of it in the future with a proper ending, instead of a sequelbait
>>729437857Quake clones are just boring and played out. We need more john woo type stuff like max payne and FEAR.
>>729443323Couldn't even finish FEAR because of how bored I got. Shooting hitscan humanoid enemies in grey corridors is fucking boring.
>>729442806NR feels like it needs a bit more variety in viable weapon possibilities along with a balance pass in general for both weapons and enemies.
>>729439914That explains why everything felt so fucking smooth.
>>729442394Based.>>729441913>LegieIs the dev working on anything rn?
>>729437857DOOM Eternal mogs you
>>729439914It isn't that hard to "optimize" a simple game to begin with.
>>729442916Hence the idiom The whole is greater than the sum of its parts
>>729439245>literally nothing but another generic ass corridor shooter that sold entirely based on the premise on being simple and genericLmao retard. Dusk was based because it finally took the "retro shooter revival" shit into the right direction and was very faithful to what it wanted to reference, unlike the generic fps games pretending they're related to old shooters.>praises zoom eternalOk nvm.
>>729437857threads like these are like ragebait to me so ill just say cry harder tranny and close the tab
>>729443274Reason why Dusk bothered me is because I really liked the first levels, nice pacing and exploration. Then it turned into Quake 3 Arena lol. Just why
>>729442125You're just stupid, back then there was no choice, the devs were broke, there was not much money in IT compared to today, licensing engines cost money, these days with easy to use and license shit like Unity and UE, for example the guy that coded roller coaster tycoon if he was born these days has no reason to waste his skill in game dev, he can go work for panaltir for 500k a year, learn some nuance and context before talking shit as if early 00s applies to today
>>729437857Cruelty squad is the only one I liked because it was some bizarre amalgamation of some amateur's favorite games filled with some interesting arbitrary stuff. Everything else is basically formulaic or borders on "good but not great" which is obvious in their sequel follow ups sucking (hedon, cultic, ion fury, ashes)
>>729445149Is this the hrot dev telling me that what he did took talent? i take back my words about not knocking you with your barely impressive skills. Telling people that they cannot easily make these sorts of engines is only because generations of programmers have been taught that this way is now redundant and that's the only reason. The fact that you're bragging about programming your own games as if your somehow better than any clueless asset flipping UE dev retards really is something else.
>>729439914Can it be modded?
>>729437857vr was the last FPS innovation
>>729437857if hrot is best boomer shooters can deliver this genre is doomed
>>729451007Play Ion Fury and its dlc
>>729437857Go play Zortch
>>729451508I said play Zortch but you should also play ion fury and its DLC
>>729445087>Lo Wang from a 2013 rebootsure looks like a ragebait to me
>Culticliterally just "we have Blood at home">DUSKit was fine, really had the "a guy tries to replicate Quake artstyle and fails" feeling to it but gameplay was tight enouch to not notice anymore
>>729439245Doom Eternal is just simply not fun, sorry
>>729452563Being 'fun' is something low tier games aspire to. Doom Eternal is more than that. Similar to Ninja Gaiden and such, Doom Eternal is about mastery.
