Game companies didn't like that, so they retaliated by making gaming antithetical to gamestop's profit model. I went to GameStop this month and it was a bad experience. The guy at checkout asked me why I don’t have a GameStop account and I told him I typically shop elsewhere. He then said GameStop has the best prices on new games which is a fucking lie. Then he proceeded to put a “Product Replacement Plan” on my game which cost me another 10 dollars. I ended up paying over 80 dollars for Metroid Prime 4.

I still go into these kinds of stores from time to time purely because I still buy physical games on the rare occassion. They're basically junk peddalers now though. Does anyone genuinely buy whatever reddit comicbook shit they're selling at huge markup? Even the anime stuff they sell is like $10 more expensive than it should be. Why would I buy a Beyblade for $40 when I can go to the dedicated toy store in the same mall and buy them for $25?
