Just got this cuz I like Metroidvanias and adventure games. I hear this one is a real brainbuster, what exactly am I getting into here?
>>
>>729456798
Write down and take pictures of everything noteworthy. Take as many notes as you can and then still look up the solution because of how hard some of the later riddles are.
>>
>>729456798
It takes a lot of commitment if you want to finish it yourself. It's not a metroidvania, it's an Action Archaeological Exploration Game
>>
>>729456798
prepare to solve puzzles with hints from clear across the map
prepare to put together archeological mysteries piece by piece
and prepare to scream in rage at surprise fish

great game, 10/10, if I can beat it you can too
>>
>>729456798
Take notes. Take the best notes of your life.
>of what
Everything.
>>
>>729456798
Best fucking game. Just know that reading the manual is mandatory and that the game HATES you.
>>
>>729456798
You'll never finish it without a guide. Anyone who says they finished it completely alone, without ever referencing a guide or a walkthrough, is lying. Enjoy it though, it's genuinely one of the best games of its genre.
>>
>>729458195
Aside from taking a knee, I can totally believe it's possible given that I did 99% of the shit besides that without any external help. Mantras are also kind of fucked too, but still doable I think.
>>
>>729456798
Is not "brainbuster" you don't really use your brain to play it if anything is the complete opposite, the game is braindead, you have to follow a guide to play the game because the progression is cryptic bullshit at the same level of getting the true ending in Valkyrie profile Lenneth (which is impossible to stumble upon unless you read a guide).

Only absolute fucking RETARDS think this game is good.
>>
>>729456798
Be prepared for the Blue Prince experience where you spend 90% of your time staring at all your notes and screenshots, 9% backtracking place you've already been and 1% actual new gameplay
>>
You can finish the game without a guide but it'll take like 80 hours if you're good. You can't even enter Hell Temple without a guide though. Not that you should.
>>
>>729458195
You're just stupid. The hardest thing in the game to figure out was that I could use the scaffolding in the tower as a ladder. Maybe you should have taken notes and drawn a map.
>>
>>729456798
Use pen and paper, draw a map, you can use the ingame map as a base, you just need a bunch of rectangles for the rooms, nothing too complicated.
Every time you see an unsolved puzzle, unopened chest, etc. make a note on your map for that room. I just label the rooms with numbers as I find unsolved stuff in them, then write down the notes for each number next to the map.
Take a screenshot of every single tablet you scan. Even tablets that seem nonsensical can end up becoming crucial clues 10 hours later when you have more context.

If you don't do this, you will want to kill yourself. You'll be constantly finding clues, keys, etc. for shit that's on the opposite side of the game.
Think of the whole game as one giant fuck you puzzle room where everything is connected to everything.

Enjoy.
>>
>>729459145
I beat it in under 20 without a guide. Sorry you had to find out you're dumb.
>>
>>729456798
use some kind of note taking program to record every single tablet you read and organize them according to their topic or you're in for a nightmare and probably either starting over or giving up and using a guide once you get like 5 or 6 areas deep in the game. It starts out straightforward enough to make you think you can just read the clues and figure shit out on your own and then drops you off a cliff once you become overconfident.

I can't tell if you're arguing for or against what you're quoting. You seem to be implying that you're offering a counter, yet the example you gave was in his favor. What you described sounds like the ideal for puzzle design.

It's not meant to be easy, that's the whole gimmick of the game. I think people are spoiled on typical video game puzzle design being effectively just "put the square peg in the square hole". Real non-video game riddles and puzzles aren't designed with the "everyone can solve them" philosophy.

The bullshit part about this puzzle is only the fact that if you start it and then exit the room, it locks itself from completion. This is garbage because the game very much trains you to read tablets whenever you can, but in that room only this behaviour leads to you getting fucked, and in all likelihood you won't find out until you make a few more saves.

I'm pretty sure there's at least 30-50 people doing this on /v/, and that most of them are motivated by nothing other than they think it's funny and it's something easy to get away with.
>>
>>729461045
That is a good puzzle but I didn't find it that hard. From the order you lose items in you can narrow down what doors you need to take at the start, and from there you should manage. If you have low HP or gear you can also try to do other stuff first. Personally I did most of that area rather late because it took me a million years to find the Moon mantra.

>>729461090
I always kept a spreadsheet with notes when playing, if you didn't do that then not having played for a while can definitely do that to you. You might even benefit from starting a new save if you haven't played for a really long time.
>>
>>729461785
>If you have low HP or gear you can also try to do other stuff first. Personally I did most of that area rather late
Considering the high gear requirements and the fact that the theme for the boss at the end of this is called "Last Guardian", I think it's intended that you clear you this area last.
>>
>>729461928
You're clearly supposed to finish it last, but you can do quite a bit of stuff first. IF you find the Moon mantra, that is. I basically only got all access points to that area after finishing pretty much everything else, so with all the hints I had it ended up being a bit disappointing.

Not just noteworthy - take pictures of EVERYTHING and note down EVERYTHING. The moment you think something isn't noteworthy, or decide you'll "just be right back" and leave the screen to go explore a bit more, that'll be the clue that you need to finish the game. It happened to me in both 1 and 2.
>>
>>729478979

>>
I gave up playing the game because everyone kept telling me to take notes, but I started playing and didn't see anything I should write down. Since I didn't even understand the main hint, I realized the game would be too difficult for me.
>>
>>729475448
I barely post on 4chan, but these were the parts I got meme'd on by the 1st game:
Backdoor after you kill the fish boss, while I had recognized the different sprite on that room, the design for the door is completely different for no good reason
Super Mario puzzle, where you have to go down a pipe on the Giants area. If the pipe was on the ground rather than on a "floating platform" I'd be fine with it
That one item that gets spoiled on the game's manual, which lets you teleport to save tablets
Maybe there was another one, not sure, but that was about it. Everything else was without guide. Mulana 2 was 100% guideless, and by 100% I mean beating the game, not actual 100% completion. Keep in mind I beat the 1st just from memory, because I thought people talking about taking notes were just retards that were dropped by their mothers as babies, but I did pump up a lot of hours into a short time frame.
1st game has a fair share of meme puzzles with straight up retarded solutions, so I don't believe in any pristine guideless completion, but 1 to 4 hints spoiled seems reasonable. 2nd game is pretty reasonable, no silly memes.
Having said all that, 4chan is a place full of bright autists and inbred losers, sometimes both at the same time, and Mulana is a game that filters out the low IQ by design, so it could go either way with those claims, but I do tend to believe those claims, given the considerations I've mentioned.
>>
>>729458195
It's not that the game can't be finished without a guide, but you'll take dozens of hours to figure out some of the bullshit parts through repetitive try and error. Some puzzles are decently design, while others not so much like the witch shit to fight Baphomet or the part that you need to make your character sleep. Whoever saying that finished the game in less than 30+ hours without getting bored or annoyed is fucking lying, whoever says that abortion of a jump is not infuriating is completely retarded, since 50% of the difficulty of La Mulana 1 is fighting with that jump and the other half are puzzles. Then there's the stuff made to piss you off like the amount of texts you can record on the computer.
I thought La Mulana 2 was better designed game, I did managed to beat the game without using a guide in 50+ hours except for a SINGLE puzzle at the end that I was too tired to backtrack.
>>
>>729479834
You're supposed to read the manual, so the holy grail doesn't really count.
In particular, if you don't commit to memory the 5x4 thing in the manual, you're gonna have a bad time.

IS Konami holding my guys at Nigoro hostage?
>>
>>729480121
It's possible, but iirc Naramura's a man of fairly frail health so maybe it's just slow progress for personal reasons.
>>
>>729479824
The first area of the ruins (Gate of Guidance) is fairly self-containted and doesn't really require major notetaking. Also it's easy to revisit at all times in case you have the suspicion that you overlooked stuff later on in the game. As someone else already mentioned, you're also supposed to read the manual.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZU3MUKAwBFM

Maybe try watching this Nigoro video and try giving it another chance. It took me like 4 restarts until I truly made it deep into the game because I kept getting filtered by early game stuff I just glossed over thinking this would be another one of those games you can just breeze through if you can put 2 and 2 together.
>>
>>729473086
I thought it might have been turned into Pampas & Selene but it turns out that was a different developer entirely
>>
>>729479626
Solving the puzzle is the reward. I thought the Underworld was way more interesting than the Eden. To me it's like the game itself is hyping up those two areas as these insane mind-blowing puzzles, given there were plenty of hints about it scattered throughout the levels, and while Eden had some outside-the-box puzzle solving, I didn't think it was too crazy. Underworld was obnoxious to traverse through, but fully figuring it out and solving the area was probably the most satisfying moment from both games.
>>729479975
Like pretty much anyone else, I just brute forced my way through. It's a dogshit puzzle in my book anyway, so I'm glad that option was available. Interesting concept, but awful communication to the player about it in the form of a proper reasonable hint.

I don't think it's a real brain Buster at all. It's not like a proper puzzle game. It's just a metroidvannia that actually needs you to pay attention and take note of everything.
>>
>>729483258
I think a common notion is that the hints aren't really unfair, they're just poorly translated in the first game. So it leads to unclarity and ambigious directions. The second game has a cleaner translation and is much clearer in what it wants you to do.
