Just beat this today. Does S&S have better lore and storytelling than Dark Souls?
>world requires minimal headcanon to make sense
>NPC dialogue adds meaningful depth
>in-game descriptions lead to a cohesive, compelling narrative
>character quests are intuitive albeit simple
>bestiary to further expand lore
>great short stories for world building
>no Zanzibart moments
>the mystery of the setting makes sense, leading to a more immersive experience

It really does have DEEP LORE.
>>
S&S was pretty good, shame about the absolutely abysmal character models. Also a shame they took timmy's money and released the sequel exclusively on epic.
>>

except for the final boss rush being like 1:1 Gwyn, Soul of Cinder but in 2D

Sacrifice is on Steam, if you really want to play it is another question.

is salt and sacrifice really that bad? I don't mind the soulslike structure changed into a monster hunter like.

The structure is massively different since it's now about separated maps that you warp to and it's focused on hunting down bosses that move around them rather than having set arenas.

Incidentally I picked it up again recently and the balance was made significantly more sensible than it was at launch, mainly in making blocking actually viable now. Pic related was against the first boss (not the tutorial one you're meant to lose to) with the same gear against the same attacks. tl;dr block stamina costs were significantly reduced and roll stamina costs were slightly increased.
>>
>>729466868
in terms of the lore, is it as interesting as its predecessor?
>>
>>729464194
beat this game many times. very good. even better with the resalted mod.
>>
>>729468312
Couldn't say, I only just started it again. I also didn't think Sanctuary had interesting lore to begin with.
>>
>>729466793
I'd divorce her too if she made my game so fucking ugly.
>>
>>729468892
Anon, Sacrifice was made after the divorce and it still looks the same as Sanctuary.

>>
>>729464743
>Yes, you do. Because it's terrible in execution as it is in paper.
On paper it doesn't sound terrible
>>
I like the artstyle, certainly made more sense in something like Charlie Murder, more into punk and scribbles, but it's still quite charming
>>
>>729471521
But it is. There's absolutely nothing to these games when you remove the sense of exploration and discovery.
It becomes just an ugly gear treadmill with clunky movement and soulless randomizer AI patterns for which there are thousands of games already, so why would you play one that didn't even commit to do it fully and properly and instead half raped a soulsvania chimera with it?
>>
>>729466793
>They divorced.
huh? qrd?
>>729469545
>She got the artistic integrity of the sequel in the divorce.
what exactly does this mean? the artstyle can't be used without permission?
>>
Need to do a playthrough at some point using the Gunblade. Looks like a fun weapon.
Also, never truly used Steel Centipede as well. Whips are actually really fun in this. Never liked them in any other Souls game.
>>
>>729472163
There was a gunblade? Where?
>>
>>729471875
Well, on paper a "souls-like monster hunter game" just sounds like dark fantasy Monster Hunter with higher stakes when dying, which doesn't sound terrible. But it does sound terrible when you explain it is a bunch of half-assed ideas put together.

>>
>>729472293
I mean, fair enough if the theory down to paper is just on the superficial/immediate elements. Now I kinda want something like that.
But I digress. Sadly this really is just as if they had given up making a sequel to the first game halfway and just tosses around some silly mages waggling their hands around teleporting through stages obnoxiously not designed for the type of "boss changes area" design they went for.

Sanc was made by a married couple.
Sac was made by a (now single) dude and a random team. I think he mentioned he's single on his website bio but it's been a number of years/
I've read one post which said that the story of Sanc was outsourced to another company but no proof, etc.

You can tell the dude really thought a lot of things out that Fromsoft never addressed. Covenants are meaningfull, fast travel is restricted in a clever way, etc.
If only Dark Souls's sequels had half as much thought put into them.

Not that anon, but Dome of the Forgotten. The ghostly enemies are unique, two cool bosses, some good verticality in rather compact area, cool loot here.
Castle of Storms has a similar vibe, also like this area. Red Hall of Cages I also like for some reason.
Hate Hager's Cavern. It was worth back then, the boss used to beat my absolute ass. Teleporting skeletons with poison blades and screaming flying mages that can one-shot you. The fuck.
TELEPORTING SKELETONS WITH POISON BLADES
>>
>>729464523
The sequel is Souslike Monhun and most people dislike it.
>>
>>729473149
I think the teleporting enemies got nerfed in one of the more recent patches. Hager's is a great spooky FUCK YOU zone. yfw the boss is a doll piloting a human shell
The bosses were cool and some were creative.
Dome of the Forgotten had the Real Nigga Sorcerer and that one memorable upside-down platforming section for the anchor 2H axe.

Hard to say honestly.
No one zone jumped out at me as a favorite, but rather the interconnectivity of the world appealed to me on a large scale.
Though of course, I'll always have a soft spot for that first little castle as the first dungeon.

the creeds (covenants) are integral to the world while also being a key mechanic to the game.
though I get what you are saying, since I used the same logic in the Souls games because they didn't have much depth to them.

Your health potion is affected and modified by your Creed.

I posted a map above if it may help you. I agree. It has a TON of interconnectivity and is hard to keep track of positioning sometime.
>>
>>729472913
I'd say origin is meaningful as well. In Dark Souls I recall character origin not making much sense. It would describe these regions your character could be coming from, but it wasn't explained/expanded on. In S&S, origin had more weight despite it not being relevant to gameplay.

I've got a couple of friends who needed an image like the one posted earlier to get through Sanctuary. They'd constantly get lost or have zero idea how to get to places, even ones they had been to before. I grew up making maps for games as well as crafting maps for tabletop games, so it didn't bother me all that much.
>>
>>729475746
I have a higher-res map that's all ingame screencaps which I can upload on something like /wg/ if you think it would help.

>>
>>729475945
That's exactly what I ended up making for them. Then I did another playthrough of the game while using my screen capture maps and added notes about item and NPC locations, as well as anything else that was noteworthy.

>>729475964
The scissors were my favorite melee weapon to use. I could just run and jump around while I snipped everything to death. Fuck, I'm gonna have to reinstall it now and do another playthrough. Maybe I'll try and do a full mage playthrough this time.
>>
i cant stand this fucking game. i dont know what you guys see in it, genuinely. i even like the art and atmosphere but most encounters and enemies feel like they were made by assholes who wanted to fuck with you for no reason.
>>
>>729472580
I liked Village of Smiles / Watching Woods best because it was the area I felt the most sense of danger and exploration, while also having a lot of neat points of interest.
The sense of danger fell off in other areas because it felt like I was getting too strong and didn't face much threats. I don't count Pitchwoods because it was just plain annoying.
>>
>>729477583
That is kind of you to do.
The little bit of Mage I played was fun. Maybe the official balance patch added some more spells early on because the previous issue was most spells being locked behind a lategame Creed so Mage was like a NG+ class. I think my Mage is at Tree of Men (what a boss).
>>729477725
Watching Woods sure is a dangerous area, those falling slimes are no joke and you are quickly introduced to navigating the precarious platforms.
>>
>>729477598
Use large weapons, not baby small weapons. A huge amount of the enjoyment comes from being able to kill stuff quickly and nothing but the greatswords can really do that.

>>729477598

The game has a lot of ambushes which you don't see properly done because much of modern game design is to spam/swarm you with enemies.
>>729477858
That specific area is cool with the different randomly-geared NPCs you see hanging. Man, playing SaS at night and having NPC player ghosts running around sure is an atmosphere.

i killed a jester, a woman with a bunch of swords and some dickhead with a giant axe but every area is a dead end, not sure why this is so confusing

Depends on the game really. Steelrising for example is best if you use the dagger things because you stack posture like mad, Thymesia is better if you go DEX and stack buffs from what I remember, Hellpoint's best weapons are one-handed swords solely because the Lightsaber exists, etc.

That's pretty much the tutorial. They only have like two or three moves.

>>729478390
It's actually all the bosses in the DLC. They're straight up unkillable past NG unless you drop your NGs down with the sole exception of this chick who is susceptible to the Bug status effect that acts like an advanced poison killing her in like two procs. They one-shot you, you deal chip damage even with the Lightsaber, there's no better weapon than the Lightsaber, the run backs are awful, etc. The worm boss requires you to do an 8 minute walk back if you die to it and there's instakill flamethrower dudes along like four encounters to reach it.
>>
>>729478339
>Sounds like you've progressed through the starter castle and the Village of Smiles at least.
This is where i am, dunno where to go since its just a death pit. This game is too confusing.
>>
>>729478793
The False Jester should've led you to the real jester which would've given you a brand that allows you to use obelisks. You can then use that power to enter the castle.
>>
>>729478793
>postimg.cc/9zKRry07
Here's that other map.
Yeah like other anon said, you should have completed Sunken Keep to fight the False Jester as well, which should allow you progression through part of the castle. You can also check out going southeast from the Village of Smiles.
>>
>>729477834
Mapmaking in games is something I actually enjoy, even if I can usually count on my own sense of direction and spatial awareness to see me through for games without easily accessed maps.

I haven't touched Sanctuary in forever, so I wasn't even aware that they released a balance patch a few years back until now. It looks like they added a few more drops to the world on top of all the other adjustments, so it might be worthwhile to play it and see how out of date all my item locations are on my maps.

Tree of Man was always one of my favorite bosses. It, along with the Witch of the Lake, is challenging but not overly frustrating. That might change if I'm doing a Mage playthrough, though. Bosses and areas I found easy with the scissors and great scissors might end up giving me a lot of trouble with a Mage.

Makes me wonder if they've done any big patches for Sacrifice. I dropped it a while after launch since the formula didn't appeal to me as much. I like MonHun, but I just wasn't feeling their particular flavor of it.
>>
>>729477583
>Maybe I'll try and do a full mage playthrough this time.
I was thinking of doing the same too though I am not sure if I should do a fresh character or NG+. I never touched magic so I like the idea of doing a fresh playthrough, but I don't know how satisfying it'll be since I recall it taking a bit to get spells. At least my NG+ has betrayer spells that you can't get until late game.
>>
>>729479064
>You can then use that power to enter the castle
what castle? the one in my image? i found some obelisk but they just looped me back to the start
>>
holy fuck im just going in circles
>>
>>729479891
The castle is to the east of Bandit Pass. If you start from the sanctuary where you find the Devara creed you'll eventually get to it. That sanctuary is east of the Festering Banquet where you fought Sodden Knight. Just get to the top and keep going right.
>>
>>729479891
Use the two maps to help us find out where you are and where to go. From the Jester, you can get back to the 'ground level', head to the right, and use the obelisk on your way to the big castle.
>>
>>729479682
Yeah, that's the dilemma I'm having as well. I'm leaning towards doing it on a fresh run just because it's been so long since I've played it. Between that fact and having never done a Mage playthrough, the game should almost feel entirely new to me again.
>>
>>729480709
You should definitely do a fresh run imo
>>
>>729479251
That must have been hell to put together, good work anon.
Come to think of it, wouldn't it be possible to drop down from the overhang at the bottom left of the Village of Smiles and then catch one of the ledges at Fort Beyond the Mire?
>>

>Makes me wonder if they've done any big patches for Sacrifice.
