BotW has literally 5 enemy types in the entire game. The entire game is you killing the same bokoblins literally over and over, and every single point of interest or discovery is to get a stupid korok seed which gives you: inventory space. To hold more shit that breaks instantly. There are like 5 bosses in the game.
Elden Ring has more unique entities/encounters in the first zone than the entirety of BoTW.

That's why Fromsoft doesn't focus on towns with lots of npcs with small talk, they focus their attention on monsters/combat/bosses rather than puzzles and quests to fetch to get a heartpiece.

Elden Ring mogs the fuck out of BOTW in almost every facet the only notable part of BoTW is all the shrine puzzles and each being pretty much unique game design. But this isn't substantial enough. Majora's Mask was far more incredible than BoTW.

You like different things. Nothing about Elden Ring is low effort you fucking retard. For Bethesda to even attempt to do all the combat animation and gameplay combat design of Elden Ring they would have bankrupted their studio at the time both creatively and financially. Skyrim has like 3 animations for combat, you swing a sword/mace/axe the same identical way with 2 repeated animations, Elden Ring one singular individual sword has like 20 combat animations, and that changes often per sword in some cases and certainly across all the item types.

The basic fucking critter creatures in Elden Ring have like 20 routines and animations and states and combat roles, Skyrim every single creature has walk and attack and that's it.

Skyrim is great at the investigative quest part, which is the easiest thing to make in a game, it's literally where videogames started is text adventures. Making up some dialogue and telling the player to go to Y to fetch X for Z character is literally the easiest shit you can do in a game design sense, you just happen to like it more than scaling a castle and fighting 20 different complex enemies.

Fromsoft games are about level design being the puzzle, trying to figure out how to get up to that spot you can see some item, realising you need to find some hole in a wall to drop down onto a beam below that circles around to a scaffold on the outside wall that takes you to a room with some mini boss and an elevator up, to then have to drop down to find stairs that take you up to the tower you saw earlier that you can then jump across a gap to get to finally get to that beam you saw earlier with the item corpse hanging on it.

That's where they spend their time designing. They also spend their time on a fuckload of animation and combat data where even one singular enemy can do all kinds of shit, strafe in all directions, act scared, swap to a torch, swap to a bow, climb ladders, throw bombs, and then their combat attacks themselves, there's not just 1 attack they do. They have like 5 different variations of an overhead slash to throw you off, sometimes the slash comes from their top right side, other times from the left and sometimes with more forward lunge etc. Enemies often have intentionally rare attacks that are AI programed to not do often that also catch you off guard, like an enemy has some rare grab attack it might perform if you're within range etc.

The weapons you use, they have combat animation for every single attack in both one handed and two handed form, as well as letting you dual wield the weapon with any other weapon, different movement triggering different attacks i.e. crouching and rolling pre an attack changes what it does. To people that don't understand animation and game animation specifically, Fromsoft are complete fucking psychopaths with this, no one touches them. For them to have shipped Elden Ring in 6 years with the amount of monsters and weapons and attack animations and sequences ontop of the massive world itself with all its weird intricacies in level design is staggering.

No, they don't. Fromsoft uses 1 outsource studio, which isn't special at all in the industry, and outsource studios usually handle props, not animation. You can't outsource complex animation work since it's so integrated into the game engine in terms of additive layered animations and physics systems, to outsource animation you have to literally hand out the game kernel and tools/engine software which is highly fucking dangerous.

Outsource studios make rock walls and vines and bulk work on making some monster models and maybe amour sets and things. (which every studio does, Activision/EA studios have like 10 outsource studios, Fromsoft uses like 2)

Nope. The only reused animation work in Elden Ring is minor stuff like opening door animations/some walk animations etc, most of it is new it's only base/staple stuff they didn't change. Because why should they re animate an opening door animation if fundamentally it changes nothing about the function and better to spend that animators time on animation on a new creature? The reuse isn't to cheat, the reuse is to ensure more effort is spent on things that are new, not retreadting old ground for the uncessary reason of saying it's visually slightly different.
This also isn't entirely true as even the animations they reused from Dark Souls etc are still changed and modified and partially reanimated in some ways anyway, not many are direct 1:1 reuse even on enemies. They just served as a starting point to more quickly iterate on the final animation.

Every single game studio reuses work where it makes sense to do so.
