Generic fantasy feels kind of AI generated. I prefer works creating their own unique spin on fantasy like most JRPGs.

I also find that Martin's works aren't really as grimdark as they're made out to be, I'd blame Bakker and Abercrombie more for starting the grimdark wave personally

Biggest problem for fantasy for me now is how gutless and homogenized it is compared to fantasy of the past. Maybe it was Dragon Age Origins that popularized it, but your companions often make way too many quips or meta jokes that take the piss out of the scenarios they encounter or the setting. Same with modern DND now where everything needs to feel like this sterile, safe, wholesome thing instead of a dangerous quest with competent people.
