Yea or Nea?
yea, simply for remapping stick click to them instead.
sure why not
It doesn't get more reddit than paddles.
Since this thread is about controllers, do you guys have any to recommend? My ancient Xbox 360 controller's left stick is pretty loose now so I'm looking for a replacement. I just want a general purpose controller for emulation and games that play better with a controller
>>729482657The only issue I have with them is you can't grip the controller the same way, you have to sort of float it in your hands by squeezing the sides a little m more
>>729482657I never tried them but i feel like id accidentally press them constantly is it not as it seems?
>>729482657yes, its good for dodging in souls likes, for example in nioh you can only dodge with X and you cant even rebind it but if i map it to my backbutton i can sprint/dodge whilst still having both thumbs available
>>729482745Same. I dont get how people are okay with pressing down on the joysticks
>>729482879Steam controller when it comes out.
>>729482903Only an issue if your usual method is deathgripping like a chimp
I've never actively used them before and I've gone out of my way to disable them on my Steam Deck because a game loaded a profile that enabled them by default and it bothered me when I accidentally press them. I appreciate that they're there for people who like them, giving people options is good.I really want to try an Xbox Elite controller though, they might change my opinion on back-buttons since those lever paddles look really satisfying to press.
>>729482657Yea. Fuck dual stick tho
>>729482903Could you map them to release activation in Steam?
The main issue I have with these on PC at least is because it's coming from a controller you can only rebind them to controller keys. Would be significantly more useful to be able to bind them to anything like you can with mouse thumb buttons but that's probably too complicated for the jeets at microsoft to prompt for in copilot
>>729482879Just get xbox one one its cheap, literally plug and play and all emulators have xmaping recently played all god of war greek saga on one without any issues but you have to know layout of playstation controller i guess if you going to emulate playstation games
>>729482913i don't think i've ever accidentally pressed them, might just be my controller though
I could take em or leave emthe only thing I usually use them for is emulator functions and even then I could just map them to stick presses or button combos
>>729482657i swear pressing in l3/r3 leads to drifting a lot faster, so they're based because they let you rebind l3/r3.
>>729482996>I really want to try an Xbox Elite controller though, they might change my opinion on back-buttons since those lever paddles look really satisfying to press.Unless the updated version of the Elite controller improved them, I hated using the paddles. They slot in with magnets, so if you bump them the wrong way from the sides (or somehow manage to get your finger underneath them) you might just pop the fuckers out by accident. They also extend too far out over the handles, so accidental presses are more common depending on how you hold your controller.
>>729482657Useful as fuck for binding 3+ buttons at onceused them for Hunting Horn offset melody and echo bubble
>>729482657big yea
>>729482879For PC, a PS5/PS4 controller right now is the best you can get without any stupid compromises, I'd say maybe the DS4 is a little more comfortable to use. If you can wait for it, Steam Controller 2 since it fixes the issue the OG steam controller had if you couldn't get into using the left pad as a dpad and twinstick games like Katamari or Nuclear Throne.
>>729482657i havent found any purpose to them but hey more power to those that do
>>729482982>>729483089>>729483409Damn, Steam controller actually looks pretty good, I think I'll wait for it. Thanks
Are there any good controllers now that have back buttons? I just want it to be able to push to talk while playing a controller game. Is the answer just to wait for steam controller?
>>729482993Top lel
>>729483409Also in the event that someone HAS a Steam Controller 1 still, and they wanted to get some more use out of it, but couldn't get used to using the left pad as a Dpad.>Haptics on>Click for action off. It's gonna feel fucking WEIRD for like maybe at most an hour, but it goes away and it's very usable as a dpad. The click to activate thing honestly kind of fucking sucks.
>>729483605First party ones, and I'd be leery about third party ones.I got pic related (but with more pedals) for extra bootans
>>729482879hyperkin's wired xbox 360 controller rehash.
>>729483775Mine has 3 like pic related, but it is not.I just thought the picture was fucking hilarious.
yeah, frees up a hand to vape while i play jrpgs
>>729483605If you want to bind push to talk, you probably want to stick with steam's controller remapper so yea just wait for the steam controller.
>>729482657Yeah. Only meaningful advancement in controller design in years.Shame some fuckwit is sitting on the patent for them.
>>729483067You can do this (and a hell of a lot more) with Steam input assuming the controller is supported by it. The Deck and upcoming Steam controller for instance are, and I think some chinkware controllers are.
>>729483848translated chinese bullshit is so funny, my mom got my cat a rechargeable flopping fish toy for christmas and the box said something like "happiness for your friend" on it
There should be 4, to replace the four face buttons. They should be toggleable on/off. Also, fuck scuf for stifling controller innovation for so long.
>>729482657That's better than the giant dumbfuck trackpads they keep adding to this controller. And by better I mean it looks outright neat, I think that's a good idea.
>>729483848I have this same one and can confirm that I can eat chicken artifact much more efficiently with it.I use it instead of a stream deck.
>>729484227It can be, but as much as I fucking hate walmart, it sucks dick the fucking speed they went to amazon tier shit when they started letting third party sellers on.
>>729482879Buying a Gamesir Cyclone 2 after I got gifted a Brook FGC2 converter for PS5. Only thing I can't use it with is my Xbox, but that's just another converter I can buy eventually, because I'm just wanting a solid all-rounder with back buttons and non-shit sticks.
>>729484171Don't get me wrong, I love back buttons, but gyro and trackpads are much bigger advancements.
>>729482657nah
>>729482657Used them once for Fantasy Life I, but already forgot why.
>>729484471>gyrowii was 20 years ago, nobody liked it then either>track pads>goodlol. lmao.
>>729482657I can't see a use for it except for something like a jump buttons which some games already circumvent by using a shoulder button
>>729482657Pointless especially since games don't use it. HL2 does but that's not a controller game. >>729482879Literally doesn't matter since everything works with games now. It's all about the shapes and layouts and what you prefer. But if you like x360 shape that much, there are copies.
>i didn't like it so nobody didlollmao
>>729484532Literally the ONLY reason.AT ALL.That anyone pretends to dislike Gyro (because lets be real, it is just pretending) is microsoft shafted it and the only place you can really get it decent is on PC, and even then it has to be futzed with via input emulation and very RARELY is actually natively supported.
>>7294826572 minimum, but they need to be remappable to stick or kbm, not just other buttons.I prefer flat like the ones in your pic, but I'll take having to adjust grip for bulky ones over not having them at all.
>>729483324>>729482657why arent any of these back buttons remapable to keyboard inputs, is some jack ass holding on some kind of patent?
>>729484570>Pointless especially since games don't use it.You miss the point of back buttons. They're not there to be special functions for games to take use of. They're there to allow for additional macros, button prompt methods and otherwise where your normal controls don't cut it. A readily available jump button, an alternative way to aim and shoot, some method of activating gyro when holding it down or tapping it, etc. Back buttons supplement and expand what you could otherwise do with regular inputs rather than trying to be an entire new extension of new game functions or whatever.
>>729484368does walmart have amazon chinkslop now? haven't been to one in years
>>729484532Gyro ≠ IR sensor aimingAiming with the gyro in OoT3D and MM3D is a huge improvement over aiming with the stick in the originals. Way faster and more precise
>>729482657more buttons, more gooder
>>729482657At this point it's essential to me and wouldn't buy a controller without them anymore. I always bind run and jump to 2 of them so i can freely move the camera when I'm moving around, just that alone is such a no brainer thing that I'm surprised it didn't become a thing sooner than it did. Awkwardly having to move your thumb back and forth between buttons to look around while moving around the world, or having to do some mongoloid claw grip.Personally i don't bind then to joystick clicking like many say since i don't have an issue with the usability of it, and the only undeniable reason to do that is to lessen stick drift, but i also would not buy a controller that doesn't have at least hall effect or tmr so that doesn't matter
>>729484781waggle is waggle.
>>729484703The website does, and there's no way to actually filter it out. It was really fucking annoying looking for a cheap bookshelf to put shit on.
>>729484214honestly never looked into it, thanks for a suggestion I'll see if I can get it doing what I want through that
>>729482879Just replace the stick
>>729483067That's an issue with whatver controller your using, because it's using xinput which is what Microsoft uses for xbox gane pads, which means a very limited amount of inputs you can program. Most flydigi has dinput option as well, which has a lottt more inputs available for mapping which means you can rebind the extra buttons to anything you want, like keyboard and mouse and macros, because they are actual separate buttons
>>729485001ahh gotcha, if you're still looking for one my cheap ikea bookshelf has somehow survived through moving to two different apartments
>>729484569You can use them to replace buttons instead of acting as new buttons. If you've ever felt the need to claw you can find a use for them. Fuck trying to play DMC 4 or 5 anymore without them.
>>729485089Nah, I also want a controller with a D-Pad that isn't as abhorrent as the 360's. If I'm going to start replacing everything it's just a better idea to get a better controller overall
>>729482657>tfw fucked up wriststheyre a godsend

>>729482657useful for screenshot button, sprinting, camera recenter, attacking if you dont like using rb/rtevery ctrl-er should have at least 4 of these in the back
>>729482657good for remapping front triggers to them
>>729482879
the new Steam controller has 4 of them, plus capacitive grip for gyro
how do the dualsense edge paddles feel?I like playstation icons in game

>>729482745Absolutely this. Save the sticks a little bit and add something much more convenient.
>>729484227>translated chinese bullshit is so funnySo you are a fan of the hit game "Overlord Leaves his Wife" starring Ma Chao
>>729486936Like tact switch buttons. They get in the way of my grip in both orientations, but I haven't had issues with accidental actuation yet in my limited time using one.

>>729486670this thing is a piece of shit, went through three of them before wising up and just spending extra on something good that wont keep chiselling away at my wallet.
>>729482657Sure. Face buttons used as fundamental actions was always a mistake simply because it prohibits you from turning the camera while you press them (unless you do some uncomfortable claw grip). The ONLY reason anyone argues for them is nostalgia
>>729487669
Since most FPS have insane amounts of AA built into them now I switched to controller. It's so much better for my wrists, add the back buttons and I'm chilling.
>>729482657Absolute nay and they should be banned from controllers unless they're 100% optional so no one has to ever consider them as part of the controller. They feel terrible to use for any quick motion, they ruin the ergonomics of the controller, even ones that are built into the grip like the Switch Pro controller feel super awkward to push in, and it leads to regular misinputs. What controllers need is the damn DS4/DualSense touchpad. There is zero reason not to add it as it takes up space that isn't used properly on any controller, adds a minimum of fourteen button inputs due to gestures you can do at the drop of a hat including physical button presses and how it segments the physical presses if you want, is not something you can unintentionally hit if you're holding a controller properly, and is just objectively a better solution to adding more buttons.
>>729482657in theory yesbut nothing actually supports them, the modern input systems have a very small amount of buttons and older systems that actually could are not used by modern software.so they kind of suck but are very good if they were actually supported.
>>729482657Modern action games and shooters would ideally be played with only triggers and back buttons, so the player would never have to lift their thumbs off the control sticks.
I've had a good time with my Ultimate 2 but I want a playstation layout controller, any reccs? is the Pro 2 good?Doesn't have to be chinkshit but I'd prefer something durable and on the cheaper side
>>729483409>without any stupid compromisesBut they use directinput when most games past 20 years target xinput. You can work around it, sometimes even in plug and play ways but I wouldn't call it without compromises overall as it adds some small input lag. Plus button names are all wrong (which some games can correct automatically or through options).
>>729482657They made Armored Core and Elden Ring fun coming from a guy who’s been sticking with mouse and keyboard for yearsThe switch walked so the steam deck could run
>>729489240>But they use directinput when most games past 20 years target xinput. If you use a computer, you use steam, and therefore can use SteamInput.>But IFuck off, shut up.It's a non issue.
>>729489240>as it adds some small input lag.Don't know about Steam Input, which I've heard a wide spread of unsubstantiated numbers for, but DS4Windows adds like 0.16ms. It's fucking nothing.
>>729488967The ultimate 2 feels a bit "clickier" than the first, especially with the shoulder buttons, giving it the illusion of being cheaper. I've got zero complaints about it though.
>>729482657I wanna use back buttons more on my controller but I'm so adapted to monster-claw that I keep forgetting that it exists.
>>729489336Eh it's more like the Wii U consolidated all the advancements in dedicated peripherals for gaming>A standard controller>Gyro>Accelerometer (Yes for some reason the gamepad itself has ACTUAL waggle and not what retards think is waggle)>Potentially Dual Screen Gaming although this mostly doesn't apply>Touch controlsSo the Steam Deck could stick all of them at the ready for someone to actually implement into games.
>>729484227My parents ordered a little collapsible playpen thing for their new puppy and the assembly manual was adorable, full of "please" and "warmly" and even some emoticons.I assume it was Japanese since bad Chinese translations are usually just nonsense.
>>729490343Yeah usually the overly polite thing is from japanese stuff
>>729482745fpbp I've never mapped anything else to back buttons outside of testing it's possible, but just the fact that you can map L3/R3 there is perfection
>>729482657I have never used a controller that has them. I would imagine you want the buttons to be big if you have such a thing for a controller right? Seems this could get in the way to me since you want to grip the controller comfortably. Why not add those extra buttons on top of the controller or with the face buttons instead? I also wouldn't be surprised if this is mostly only useful for shooter fans. Play FPS on a PC with KBnM instead. The way the genre was intended to be played.
>>729482952your thumb is already on them so why can it not double as a button?

>>729482657Of course. You remap back buttons to keys you don't use on your keyboard, like F13. And map those keys to specific things in games.
>>729482996I have the same issue. You can use steam input mapping to make it so you have to long press the buttons for the action to happen.

I liked the paddles on the first elite Xbox controller, but over time I noticed that I really only ever used the top two. I think a pair of basic back buttons will eventually become the standard for normal controllers, with four buttons and other features like stick tension, available triggers, profile slots, etc. being reserved for "elite" type controllers
>>729493505It has identical form factor to the Dualshock 4.

>>729482657I like them if they have enough resistance. Often if they're light pressure paddles I'll find myself accidentally pressing down on them after holding a controller for more like 10 minutes. Just the mild fatigue of holding the controller causes my fingers to rest on the back of the controller, so it's more vital than other buttons for those paddles to not actuate with small amount of force applied.
>>729482657No, I just bought a controller which has them and I immediately had to turn them off as I was pressing them on accident all the time. I don’t see myself ever using the back buttons.
