Monoco is really just set dressing for most of the scenes outside of his few one liners. His story is pretty much contained in his camp interactions.

I really wish there was a version of this game that didn't have parry mechanics. The bespoke character mechanics are fun and there's a lot to explore in build variety, but none of it matters if you can't memorize a boss' 6-hit full party combo with elden ring feints and delays. I'm at the end of Sirene and just fought three bosses in a row that blow me up if I mistime one hit of their gigantic combos and it's starting to become grating. Thank god for the instant battle retries or else this game would be unplayable.

You're trading all defense for damage of course you're going to get one shot you dingus. You're probably also doing well over the damage cap so all that extra gearing for it is completely wasted. Even with my mostly defensive party I was still easily hitting the damage cap mid act 2. You don't go all in on offense until the damage cap gets lifted in act 3.

I got bored of the combat a few hours in and switched to story to steamroll it but after watching expertfags play I realized I actually got the intended experience because my fights lasted what seemed like forever compared to the whole oneshot everything in a couple turns shit tryhards got. The combat really was just a worse persona in just about every way.
