i remember playing assetto corsa a lot during 2017-2020, which was considered the golden age of modding for it, at least it was when i last played it regularly, which was around 2022. it was considered the golden age because the community was huge, helpful and everything was freewhen covid happened and everyone stayed home all the time, something changed. suddenly everyone started using discord to share mods, modders started testing the water for paid mods - i even remember one well-known modder announcing one day that he was "trialing" paid mods "just to see" and that he "wasn't going to do it" and then a few weeks later all of his mods were paywalled. i began to see more and more of this happening to mods that used to be free and the modding scene quickly entered a mini civil war in the following year or two. now hardly anybody releases free mods like they used to, the collaborative spirit isn't there like it used to be, everybody uses private mods, everything is released on discord and the modding scene in general has withered away. it still exists but the average quality has just plummeted in my opinion, as most mods now are just cheap ripped models from other gamesit is as if covid exacerbated the economy so badly that people literally could not afford to do anything anymore, not even mod for free, so they were forced to mod for money and naturally the emotions associated with money ensued
