First of all, I don't play just one type of genre.
Secondly, some games are endless. I play many different types of games such as fighting, team based, JRPG/RPG, Racing, Platformers, Pinball, Tetris, Action, etc.
There is no "playing only that game" for me. There are times like today I don't play online team based games because Sundays are the worst to team up in quick play since Sundays is when kids flood servers (even on here).
Fighting games takes a lot of someone mentally and emotionally. I'm going to want to do something different sometimes.
Tetris is for when I'm in a very specific mood. If I'm stoned/drunk, no way am I touching Tetris.
RPG and JRPGs is like reading a story book. You're not going to want to go through a long story nonstop until you finish it.
Point is, I play a vast variety of games because I play what I am currently feeling like at that moment and my moments are not consistant because I ACTUALLY PLAY VIDEO GAMES. I am actually someone whose hobby is video games. I enjoy a vast variety of games and would even boast I probably know more than you about them.
So yes, I am going to aquire a lot of stuff randomly because it's not a waste to me.The only waste is buying something that was bad.

I "manage" my backlog by playing either the shortest games or the games I want to play most. I also divided my backlog into three tiers based on quality, though it doesn't help me much because sometimes I just want to play a shitty game or two.

All that said, games are a hobby and entertainment and shouldn't be a chore, so I'm aware I'll never clean up my backlog. Just play what you feel like playing.
