>Number one, the marrow furnace, I'll inject liquid metal into your bones, boiling them from the inside.
>Number two, the nerve harvester. Each nerve fiber will be plucked and strung. Vibrating with agony.
>Number three, the organ grinder. Your organs will be twisted and cranked, A grotesque puppet of pain.
>Number four, the skin weaver. Your skin will be peeled and rewoven. A living tapestry of torment.

Number 6, the mind flayer. Your thoughts will be shredded. Echoes of endless torment.

As for SC4 it had a nice blend of simple yet beautiful graphics and art style, and was still concentrating on the macro scale instead of trying to show you each and every person or vehicle.

When it becomes 90% of the game, it isn't fun. Cities Skylines is a fucking joke, it's so easy to keep your city's budget in the green you essentially have infinite money 20 minutes into the game. You spend the rest of the game dealing with traffic and noise pollution killing your population.
>>
>>729510912
cities skylines is just a sandbox game, there is no actual city management involved, it's basically minecraft for boomers. also the fanbase weirdly defends the broken traffic

Cities Skylines 1 was fun but I'd love a modernized take on SC4 with perhaps simpler graphics but a more sophisticated region system, SC4 was hard as fuck to run back then but you could totally take advantage of superior hardware now

A city that is able to grow organically. Wtf is this zoning crap? Why am I spending 99% of my "play"time on fucking roads and intersections? Why do I personally have to overseer the construction of every single clinic, police station, kindergarten and water tower?
>>
I just don't like how bad the foliage looks in a lot of the 3D city builders.
>>
Mods fix all the city skylines issues and give you a great degree of control. It's still the best most feature complete 3D one you can play with lots of mods and customisation
Sim city 3000 was the peak though
>>
>>729514542
No it isn't. Building shit tons of roundabouts everywhere and doing autistic interchanges and highway systems and having to put subways and ridiculously robust bus and train systems in your 100k pop city isn't realistic at all.
>>
>>729514517
this
>>
>>729514638
Funny you say this because overdoing highways and interchanges is how many people come undone with their traffic
you actually don't need many at all. A good public transport system and basic hierarchy of small to median roads can sew you go very far
Personally I like planning bus, tram & metro routes but if that's not your thing I can see it being annoying
>>
>>729514584
Because that's how a town/city works. You provide public buildings and maintain roads. People buy lots of land and build stuff on it according to the zoning laws. What'd you expect from a city builder?
If you want the game to do everything by default you might as well be playing The "game" of life, a passive simulation.
>>
>>729514638

I wish SC4 had even bigger maps, maybe being able to use the entire region as a single map.
I also wish it had some of the signature Maxis music and funny NPCs from the early 2000s.
Too bad Wright was semi-out by SimCity 3000 because he was bored of the franchise, but the people making it were so invested in being faithful to his vision, they kept pestering him with questions and asking for approval, by his own words.
None of that happened with 4, which is a real shame because 4 has by far the best gameplay of any city builder ever made.

Theotown is just a mobile 2D city painter.
Cities Skylines, on the other hand, is more about managing road infrastructure/traffic, in my opinion.
I'm not an expert in any of the three games, because I think city builders are feminine games, to be honest (they focus too much on aesthetics and not enough on engineering), but I think what sets SC4 apart is how your city evolves over time. Your city is always kind of crap at first, full of dirty industry, crime, low-value services, etc.
But after you've expanded it in all directions, the most complex part of the game comes in, which is to increase the value of certain areas by bringing in services that generate more wealth, technological industry, etc. I think this is what sets SC4 apart, the way you first build the city, and then start working on it to make it evolve.

But as I said before, I only played each of these games for about 10 hours each. I prefer other styles of management games.
>>
SimCity 4 was really wonderful for filling up serveral tiles and building sprawling interconnected cities across the map, I had a lot of fun with that. Ultimately, though, I don't think I could go back to it again.
Cities Skylines is far more fun when it comes to simulating public transport networks and when it comes to actually building cities, Workers and Resources gives you so many more options and complexity.
>>
>>729515924
>aesthetics are feminine
>because I can't see the hard rules governing this decision, it's pure aesthetics
You are unenlightened. Things that look right tend to look right because they align functional elements of the city in a useful way. A good looking city that isn't just "whoaaaa, crazy!!!" Is good looking because it's functional.

>>
>>729516294
That's horrifying.
>>
>>729516176
That doesn't contradict what I'm saying.
I think both Sim City and Cities Skylines are too superficial in terms of urban management and engineering, so their full potential lies in the aesthetics. It's like Transport Fever 2, which is supposed to be a traffic simulator, but its true potential lies in simulating dioramas.
But I agree with what you say. It's just that I never saw SC or CS as really interesting games for the beauty of functional things. I think there are many more interesting games in this regard, such as Factorio, OpenTTD, that Soviet game, even Dwarf Fortress.
Here's an example of "beauty" that I like, but which is linked to mathematics (handmade train timetables) and platform engineering in A-Train 9:

>>
>>729516958

>>
>>729510912
I own City Skylines, but I've never played it. But I've heard that City Skylines doesn't really have any management, and that you basically can just build whatever you want. There's no real challenge in balancing things out in order to make a profit. You just start building and get drowned in money, no challenge = no point in playing.

That being said. SimCity 2013 is still the best one IMHO. It's in full 3D this time, and I really don't mind that you can't build as big cities as previous games. The online part was annoying though. I'm hoping they'll port it over to Steam one day, I'd buy it a second time if they do.
>>
Why is a medieval settlement game made by a tiny studio the only city builder that uses vectors for zoning plots? I thought way back when Cities XL had custom farm plots that every city builder would eventually adopt that system for every type of zoning. But a decade and a half later and they all still use the same square grid despite having free form roads.
>>
>>729517394
American supremacy. You are asking for old continent way to build cities but even European devs follow American dichotomy. ML is an exception because dev is a nerd obsessed with old cities from his country.
>>
>>729516958
Gridaxxing is more than effective yeah, can even slice 10 lane highways through a city like some batshit America states.

Problem is that even American cities don't have only perfectly square plots. You can't zone a Flat Iron style building or any none perfectly square plots w/o gaps in most city builders.
>>
>>729513894
it's called a guard'n

something europeans just put anywhere for some reasons, it has trees and stuff
>>
>>729517394
Related to this but in most city builders you don't have to fight the topography, it's a fat world on practice. Cities are shaped by environment but that's quite hard to replicate in a videogame and even then it'd filter potential players.
>>
>>729510912
Popcap for Cities Skyline is way too fuckin low. You can't get anywhere close to making a megacity with it
>>
>>729510912
Actually simulates things as opposed to just being a building plopper.
>>
>>729514247

>>

Most of those were always highways to begin with, or unused space. Sounds like you're the type of person who believes those "highways killed the downtown" image macros.
>>
>>729511467
W&R isn't really a city sim, from what I've seen it's more akin to the colony builders that focus on workers...and resources. Granted, there's a lot of little autistic things that I've always wanted to see in city sims, but...

It still hurts.
>ugly artstyle but improved slightly, giving hope that it would improve
>actually separated the idea of functional businesses and buildings (could be half-occupied, etc.)
>added the large apartment complexes that are common in the country
>ran smoothly for large cities
The fact that utilties weren't included because the dev didn't like them rather admitting that it was further down the road as a finished product should've been a red flag
>>
>>729513645
It's not even good as a traffic sim, looking at where the traffic is actually going and where it's slows down is unrealistic, like at highway junctions, the traffic jams are before cars enter the highway, not afterward

Because Maxis used research the topics in-depth when making games, then applying what they learned as mechanics in their games.

You can't just make everyone rich and learned in SC4, you need poor and dumb retards somewhere to run common jobs. You need a place to send goods to and a economically developed region before there's demmand for financial industries. Regions make so your city doesn't exist in a vaccuum.
Also the graphics are timeless and great. The game looks amazing no matter the year.
>>
>>729512425

The artstyle feels "off" to me, like pixel art without understanding how any of it worked. (This is endemic to games like this). I don't like trying to design the insides of houses, too, it feels like they wanted to remake The Sims 1 but a half-assed version of it that makes everything weirdly-proportioned.
