Should I be using CRT filters when emulating 2d games?
>just buy a CRT!!!!!
No.

I honestly have no idea which one I'm supposed to be using, there's too many options
>>
Just use what you think looks best anon. It's personal taste, none of them replicate a real CRT perfectly so just do what you like.

It's a psp game you dumb fuck it wasnt on a CRT.
>>
I already do that with 2000s vns and it does really enhance my experience
>>
>>729510928
Do whatever you want man
>4chan guy said it's bad!
>reddit guy said it's good!
>youtube said this and that
Just use your eyes bro use whatever you like better, you're not getting the
>intended experience
anyway and they never intended for these games to be experienced 30 years in the future so do what you wanna

There's bound to be bad filters that ruin scenes by either making them too dark or too bright.
>>
That's just digitized anime artwork with a scanline overlay. The main reason you'd want a proper CRT shader it is when the artwork relies on semitransparencies or the horizontal blurring/s-video artifacting of the output signal with artistic intent. Canonical examples are the vertical-lined waterfalls in Sonic, and Dracula's portrait in SoTN.
>>
>>729511174
Yeah that can also happen with your screen and how it's calibrated are you going to go out of your way to recalibrate colors and brightness to match how the game looked in the screens they used during development you absolute bufoon
>>
>>729511143
what shader is that
>>
I like this one that an anon on /vr/ made but for some reason it's flickering
>>
>>729511285
It's this random filter I downloaded on /vr/

Not him, I fucking hate chromatic aberration.
>let me emulate shitty CRT with composite cable
Why would you do that to yourself?
What next? Introduce geometry shift when the colors on the screen change?
>>

This looks amazing, mind sharing?

Could you please educate me on what exactly is chromatic aberration and why it's bad?
Are you talking about random color changes between the pixels?
Last week I was emulating Bloodborne and everyone told me to turn off chromatic aberration and I just did but I have no idea why
>>
>>729511501
Sure, it's this one.
It looks good but for some reason it flickers non-stop in game.
If you figure out how to turn off the flickering please let us know how.

>>
>>729511632
nta but probably because of your monitor/ingame refresh rate, those things usually only work properly at very (very) high refresh rates
>>
>>729511549
chromatic aberration is a camera lens issue, it's the result of a faulty component, it trouble the images, mix the colors and blur everything.
it's not good looking and it's not meant to be nostalgic except for people who weren't born when CRT were a thing, technology progressed hard to avoid chromatic aberation and the only one that try to make it back are retarded devs and some B tier movie makers, your picture is the exemple why you have to get rid of it, it's that fucking bad.
>>
>>729511294
There's probably a default interlacing parameter that can be turned off.

It's probably related to the refresh rate, as you said. It isn't reflected at all in my recordings.
>>
>>729510963
Use anything that looks good to your eye.
>>
>>729511549
It looks awful, I feel physical discomfort by just looking at pictures with it somehow my brain is trying to get the image in focus.
If you saw it on a CRT your shit wasn't working as it should.
In photography it means your lens are shit etc.
So making your games look worse on purpose is simply incomprehensible to me.
>>
>>729511421
neat
>>
>>729511243
Only good post. Adding black horizontal lines or a grid overlay is horrid. Subtle blending can turn dithering into a desirable artistic improvement.

CRT games had pixelart drawn on CRT screens.
>>
>>729510963
This is the best one in the thread, but it might need a slight contrast boost.

for 2d I do crtsimpi
for low poly i do crtsoftblurpi

P. S. That is under the assumption that you're using a standard LCD monitor; it shouldn't be necessary if you have an OLED display, or perhaps a decent mini-LED monitor.
>>
>>729510963
If you have no idea, then there's no reason to use them at all. You likely would not benefit from the difference.
>>

>let me emulate shitty CRT with composite cable

the same reason we're using crt shaders to begin with, fidelity and nostalgia

Most ones that come with emulators are shit
>>

I'm on an OLED and I have to zoom to full size and lean towards the screen to see the effect.

CRT monitors look nothing like CRT TVs.
240p on a CRT monitor won't have any scan lines also image won't be nearly as soft because composite was just garbage.
Devs would have to look at their art on a devkit console to see the final result because of that.
My old photo 240p120Hz colors are just fucked on that wallpaper not the fault of the display

I just put my JVC telly side by side with my monitor and tinkered the shader until they looked the same.
>>
>>729510928
Magpie is a gamechanger for me and I use Lottes for so many games, if I need to upscale something up more than 50% then I prefer some kind of scanlines/dithering over the alternatives like bilinear, FSR or ANET. I'd rather it look CRT blurry than just dull boring blurry.
>>
>>729514181
nice which filter and settings?
>>
>>729510928
cute
>>
>>
>>729514546
Aren't these filters supposed to hide the dithering?

Do I look like a computer scientist?
I have no idea.
This is what it looks like with the scaler off.
>>
>>729514721
And here's FSR just for good measure.
