I remember when combat used to feel secondary in RPGs and nobody really cared.
I dont give a fuck what you remember
>>729513142>and nobody really cared.I cared, but if the story was well written I powered through the combat because I wanted to continue the story. Now we have both shit combat and shit story.
>>729513142I don't think kotor had bad combat. It was engaging enough, and had satisfying progression.
>>729513142blame bioware.
>>729513142we caredthe masses didn't and they still don't, even after getting punished for it.
>>729513142This is cope by pc boomer. Holy fuck did crpgs suck to play back then. Meanwhile all jrpgs were fun and addicting to play.
>>729513142I don't mind combat being secondary if a lot of it is automated, with certain degrees to that as well. Like Morrowind's shit tier combat would be absolutely fine/fantastic in an isometric RPG, where it's just click to say to go here, click attack to do your attack, and then wait for the next opportunity. Not its shite where you have to manually move every pace and spam attack but at the same time your actual movement and attacks don't really matter to how combat plays out. RTWP is genuinely one of the best solutions out there, since it is just auto attacks and then deciding to use your abilities and such as need be, rather than the game pretending to want your input and just ending up being nagging.
>>729513954>Meanwhile all jrpgs were fun and addicting to play.
Fuck off back to twitter
>>729513142>I remember when RPGs were boring slop for casual normalfags like myself who don't like games and just want digital experiencesThe good news is that they still are.
>>729513142Lol. Before that shit RPG genre was filled with games like: Wizardry, M&M, Diablo and Goldbox, all of which were very combat heavy.
>>729513142I don't like it when rpgs are divided into isolated sections of story, combat and skill checks. these all should play out simultaneously and intertwine.
>>729514014correct opinion
>>729514101what game is bottom left
>>729513142Combat is secondary. So is the story. The writing and voice acting was pretty lame. The primary focus on RPG video games is character building. You don't beat these games through technical skill, but through strategic planning. You win combat by having a party that tilts the statistical scales to your advantage, and win arguments by having your PC smart enough to dismantle all the bullshit the NPCs complain about.
>>729515356LMAOMass Effect 1
>>729515356Mass Effect
>>729513142Amen, brother
>>729515904>>729515896thanks, didnt recognize it, i should replay it one of these days
>>729515952>Real time combat: on>Harm: learnedYeah, it's gaming time
>>729516042Somehow I never played as a mage, I think once I finish Underrail I will re-install Arcanum and play on brain-dead mode.
>>729513142Combat felt secondary to you. Don't project that onto everyone.
>>729514101wat? ME1 was everything but dull rpg with shitty combat
>>729514101This can't be bait, people are that fucking stupid
>>729514101Brother, all haters of tw3 talk about is how shitty the combat it, it is the most cared about aspect of that game.
>>729513142Unpopular opinion, but I really liked the combat in Kotor. It feels right for a Star Wars RPG.
>>729517532Maybe but if it had combat system more similar to Jedi Academy or JK2 it would be a huge improvement. But it was easier for Bioware to just copy paste NWN code and some story I guess.
>>729513142I'm playing through .hack//IMOQ right now and YEP, can't agree with that statement enough. The combat is not very good from a technical perspective but I'll be damned if the gameplay as an overall package isn't awesome.
>>729515249>Wizardry, M&MThe first few games in those series definitely don't have combat as their focus, even if there was a lot of them.
>>729517808I wouldn't want it to. I love JK/A, but the way I see it action mechanics and RPG mechanics are a fine balancing act, because when you include one you dilute the other past a certain point. JK/A are their own games and same with Kotor. Most modern games suck massive fucking dick because they're shallow action games with shallow RPG mechanics that invalidate the action mechanics the longer you play the game. You'd be doing the opposite by making Kotor more action-based. There's good JRPGs with action mechanics like Star Ocean and Tales that could theoretically keep Kotor's RPG identity, but I think it is fine as it was.
