I'll be honest and this might be a controversial take, but I attribute a huge part of Final Fantasy's, and Square in general's decline to the formation of Monolith Soft, who took a lot of the creatives who worked on 2D Final Fantasies, Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross, Xenogears, and a few other 2D square games, with them.
