They actually understand it pretty well it terms of gameplay and level design, the masks which all take advantage of an existing platforming element/moveset in the series, and the coyote time slide fits perfectly into Crash's brand of precision platforming. Hell, they even knew to include techniques like spinning on a metal bounce crate to stop bouncing.

They just don't know a proper ratio for level lengths and collectables.

The thing about Crash 4 is it has soul, but it's not soul belonging to Crash. The gameplay is Crashy, the levels are Crashy (if seriously overdone in difficulty), but the style just isn't Crash at all. This isn't even a reinvention like how Twinsanity went more for the crazed wild part of the franchise instead of the badass Crash riding a bike part, it's just completely different
You could put half the shit in this game in a generic shovelware game and it'd feel right at home. There's none of the style, the charm, the music. It's Crash in gameplay but nothing else. And even then it's Crash in gameplay but some could argue WoC and even Twinsanity did it better at many points.

Crash 4 is a perfectly fine game where a retard came through with a pen and started drawing dicks everywhere. Collecting all of the boxes to get the gem IS THE POINT OF CRASH. You do not hide boxes offscreen and in gotcha locations. You do not force the player through levels twice as long as any original trilogy stage only to say "lol, ya missed one! ;)" TFB did not understand what makes Crash actually interesting. It's a platformer AND an approachable collectathon that rewards precision and completion in reasonable spades. They made an autism fangame instead of something for actual people.

Precisely. It's so plasticky and fake, so clean and inoffensive. We're talking about the same franchise which had the first game include Crash wiggling his eyebrows seductively before jumping on top of a swine, a hot bandicoot babe and a mafioso potoroo with a tommy gun. The sequels didn't really stop, they went further with the wackiness.
When I first played IAT, went through the pirate world, seeing the generic ass rats on barrels and crab enemies, it didn't feel like Crash where the enemies are lab assistants dressed as wizards which you strip down to their underpants or monkeys holding a tower of pots. The world looked so safe and boring too, old Crashes had cool details like the billboards in Warped's bike levels or all the animals chasing Cortex in the Dok Amok stage in Twinsanity. None of that here. And the music was "generic adventure music" rather than anything notable
It got worse with the writing too. When I heard the Wrath Of Cortex reference in the first Cortex fight, I audibly groaned. Twinsanity did the same joke but it was actually fucking funny because it was the devs admitting the game was a total bomb and ended with a funny gag. This is just

I blame the rise of ZBrush for all that shit.
Modern 3D artists don't know how to make 3D models from scratch for video games, they know how to make clay shit for animation movies at Pixar. Since it's clay they're also thought to never create any hard edges so they smooth everything to hell and back.
And since the 3D models are so shit they also rarely go through the trouble of making proper UV maps for clean textures from IRL photos, they just hand paint that shit on the model.

IAT is a different canon than WoC. WoC is a direct continuation to Warped in its own right and Twinsanity is a direct sequel to WoC
Hence the game basically retcons the rest of the franchise into never happening. The only games canon under IAT are the three PS1 titles and CTR since Oxide recognizes Crash and there are pictures from the remake in his room.

Sonic is a shit series that only got popular because it had good music, because of the TV shows and because of all the ads SEGA did where they capitalized off of Nintendo's well deserved (at the time, modern Tendies are morons) reputation. The games themselves are awful, the concept of running fast is constantly destroyed by shit puzzles and boss fights with horrible physics, bonus stages that are a chore to beat and forced bad endings if you don't want to spend a year searching for emeralds in the most random places ever

The problem is that isn't true. Activision SHIPPED millions of copies (as they do by default) but the SELL THROUGH (people actually buying the game) was very very low. Furthermore, budget estimates the break even point for IAT is somewhere at 3 million units based on staffing and development time.

The good news: Crash 4 was profitable.
The bad news: Crash 4's ROI (Return on Investment, Google it) was 4%.

Had this been an indie game with a much lower budget, this wouldn't be much of an issue but for a triple ASS game, that's really fucking bad. Just like Radical Entertainment with Prototype 2 before them, one flop and Activision will give you the boot. It's either that or be absorbed by one of their other divisions and TFB really didn't want to work on CoD.
