Having high effort content filling up every single foot of the explorable map just makes it feel artificial. Not that the other extreme is any better, that is witcher 3-style "open world" with 5000 generic locations to studiously collect. But there needs to be some 'empty' content to stumble through, else it just feels like you're going through a fairground or something.

The Larian games are a great example of this. Every two feet is another voice acted encounter, like you'll literally have thieves making camp a minute's walk from a crashed nautilus. Seemingly without being aware of the thing they can look directly at from where they're standing (and which would've showered them with debris when it came down almost on top of them), and other dumb stuff like that. Never in either of the D:OS games or in BG3 did I feel like I was inhabiting the setting of the game. It always felt like going between different fairground rides. BG2 wasn't as bad as that, but zoning into a new location and immediately discovering the very heavily lampshaded location questline, it just felt gay. I'd much rather get randomly attacked- and oneshot by an ankheg out of nowhere than have multiple NPCs hand-hold me to the bug's location over the course of several minutes before I ever get to do anything.

All the indicators are there if you have two brain cells. The Ellesime clones, the bedroom, the comments of the dryads, Irenicus himself and many other stating his attempts to rekindle emotions besides hate in himself via any means necessary, from higher emotions like love to baser emotions like lust. He went from trying to recreate his love with Ellesime but none of it worked. He finally went down the chain to the point of grabbing some waif and raping her to see if he could feel anything from the act. He got no emotional pleasure out of it, so he likely never did it again, but that was the point he was at when the game starts.

When I play my MC as a spellcaster I tend to send the AoE shit in first unless my party is immune to it like a frontline fighter wearing the web-immune boots. When I play my MC as a frontliner I only use mages for buffs and enemy buff-stripping and avoid the aoe problem entirely.

For BG2 Imoen, is it really better to just have her unarmored so she can use magic? I can't find the elven chain that allows both thief and magic. I really only use her as a thief since I already have Aerie.

What's a good setup for a spellcaster in a boss fight?
I've found that mages are great for clearing normal mobs, but vs high level bosses they can't do any damage due to the magic resistances and outright immunities to different status effects.

Yes. In BG2 she's mostly a mage and should be played as one, just with enough thief for decent traps/locks skill levels. Aerie shouldn't be your only mage in the first place since her cleric/mage multi-class means she advances in level so slowly.

Spellcasters can still trivialize bosses and harder enemies but it becomes more complicated than just casting damage spells like fireball.
You can lower enemy magic resistance with spells like Lower Resistance, Pierce Magic, and Pierce Shield, letting you follow-up with your more debilitating/lethal spells that would otherwise be resisted.
Most bosses and difficult encounters also involve enemies that start the fight with several buffs automatically, instantly applied to them so mages become really important simply for the ability to strip those buffs with spells like Breach and Dispel/Remove Magic.
There are also spells like Doom and Greater Malison that impose penalties on all saves affected enemies make, which also makes them more vulnerable to your spells.
Defensive buffs like Stoneskin/Mirror Image/Protection from Magical Weapons keep you alive and in many cases make you the best tank in the party.
Buffs like Haste/Improved Haste can turn your martials into killing machines.
At higher levels you hit the peak of power with the Improved Alacrity HLA. Follow that up with Time Stop and you can empty your entire spell book during stopped time and watch everything die when time resumes. Or just load a contingency with three casts of Horrid Wilting set to go off upon seeing an enemy, that'll take care of most encounters on its own.

Oh and you can always use summoned creatures for combat instead of slinging damage spells. You get some truly absurd summons as you get higher in level. Mordenkainen's Sword is immune to almost everything and so can solo a lot of the tougher shit all on its own, and the HLA spell to summon a Planetar is as good as summons ever get. The only thing you really have to be aware of at higher levels is that the Death Spell spell automatically kills all summons in the AoE. Useful to keep around yourself to deal with enemy summons which get more common in ToB.
