Welcome back /v/, to the continuation of our screenshot LP of "4.6 Billion Year Story: The Theory of Evolution".Previous thread: >>729485110>What is this game?A primitive, but soulful DQ-like JRPG from the PC-98 era with a strange, sometimes funny, sometimes depressing plot that spans billions of years. It was developed by Almanic Corporation and published by none other than Enix. You may be more familiar with the later SNES re-imagining of this game called E.V.O. Search For Eden. In both games, you play as la creatura and strive to evolve from a fish all the way up to a sapient humanoid, while also traveling the planet and helping your wife Gaia remove any obstacles to evolution's progress across the eons. Unlike the SNES version, where you build your creature by spending points to buy different body parts, the original PC version allows the player to distribute points to 4 main attributes which give you entirely new body plans once a threshold has been met.To download the translation patch yourself or view the translated manual, get it here - https://46okumen.com/projects/e-v-o-the-theory-of-evolution/The ROM can be acquired from MyAbandonware. The emulator we use for this game is Neko Project II. For help troubleshooting the in-game save feature, refer to the beginning of the LP.Tonight will be special because I will be using new technology to capture our screens. ShareX will now allow me to occasionally show you in-game animations, as well as speed up the normal screenshot process. Our story continues after we listen to the last words of an old dying pterosaur. He has given us the task of finding his protégé on the southern continent. Somewhere to the west, Nemesis waits for our arrival. If you happen to spot this thread give it a bump to let the /v/ros know it's story time :)
You ever try to pick up cute dinosaur chicks at a funeral?
If you don't remember, Pteran is the name of the fellow we're looking for. Only he can convince the rest of his tribe that the apocalypse is coming.
Here's the volcano, now in live action.
To the south, we spot some more active volcanoes, as well as another point of interest on the world map.
>>729553119cool neon lava

We're too much of a unit to squeeze past this palm tree, so we will have to go around.
>respect the local culture>don't fight people over minor slights>be polite to strangersWhy can't EBT recipients understand this?
Powerful foes block our path to the south...
/fraud/TRENBELONE AT MIDNIGHT NEW YEARS EDITION
Aw yeah hit me up with some more of that sweet sweet radioactive goopI need the EVO Genes bad, man
If you look real close up there, you can see the supervolcano in the background.
thank you my wife :)
We must cross the strait to reach the southern continent.
>>729553737I sure hope nothing bad happens to it.
A dead end!?
Of course they expect you to take the long way around. Good thing our gigantic health bar allows us to ignore the threat of drowning.
>>729553932Bro just climb the mountains
Those with the Vitality to cross the coastline are rewarded with the sight of a healing oasis.
The enemies in this area are the most evolved yet. We've already discussed how dangerous Brachiosaurus is, having been one ourselves only two evolutions ago.
Thankfully, our Crush damage is hilariously high after a solid hour of grinding, nearly becoming our first special to break the 1k damage record.
gg ez
There are a ton of these guys here so I'm just gonna eat them all.
If the AI rolls Crush we must be prepared to take 900+ damage ourselves.
Now that we've consumed everything in the area, it is time to evolve.
>>729554541I wonder how long it'll be until we're no longer a lizard.
Vitality took us all the way to the bottom of the evolutionary tree, but we had to stop because we reached the Vitality game-over threshold. By raising Endurance and pushing our evolution sideways, we have discovered a new fakemon called Poladocus.
Our next destination is in sight, but we must travel through another valley filled with hungry dinosaurs.
>>729554613That's the ice god from Fossil Fighters.
>>729554613We look sick as fuck.
As cool as our new form is, this useless piece of shit loses the Crush attack. If I were a power gamer I would just send us back and stop evolving, but we want to see as many new sprites as possible don't we? I just hope his stats are good enough to make up for the loss of our signature move.
>>729554605It's entirely possible to remain a lizard until the final chapter.
After some experimentation my assessment is that this species' unique attribute is its Defend command, which has more damage reduction than any other species we've unlocked this era.
>>729552896Aww shiet he's back again! You are my favorite thing on the internet right now Anon. I'm going to sit back, relax, and eat some gelatinous cube while I read along.
We are encountering some truly large bois now
>>729554915They done my nigga pachy dirty in this.
HOW does he have the Horn attack?
I'm still testing the upper limits of how much footage I can record until I hit the upload limit.
>>729555018The yellow part of his head is supposed to have little spikes on it
I haven't done enough testing to know for sure, but I suspect some enemies are more resistant to Special (all non Fight commands), and some are more resistant to Fight.
We have made it through the dinosaur gauntlet.
Although the most used icon for points of interest is the cave, most of them aren't actually caves like this one.
Right at the entrance a rock blocks our path. Where the fuck do we go now? Time to look around.
Can't a man backtrack in peace?
These are the HARDEST motherfuckers to put down without Crush, and I can't walk past them.
It doesn't help that the game randomly decides to make some of your attacks do 50% damage.
Brachios are free EXP if you don't get hit by Crush 3 turns in a row.
I love you.
After some more careful exploration I found a way to reach this cave that was previously blocked by the mountain range.
We've encountered some strange fellows beyond the thicket.
Apparently an Ectoconus is a herbivorous mammal of some kind.
>>729556203Mammals? But isn't that an egg cluster next to them?
Thanks to whoever recommended ShareX, the instant window capture is a life saver.
These niggers eat children!
>steal eggs>get killed by the victims family>wowwwwww the reptiles are genociding us oy vey its annudah shoah
>>729556352Oh right. Egg thievery is a thing animals do. Boy I have egg on my face! Ha ha ha...
Peruvian gaming
I have to make sure my mouse isn't in the window before I PrtSC or else it gets caught in the capture program.
Oh, so THIS is why we couldn't head south yet. Good thing we have experience playing shitty cryptic JRPGs and didn't get lost for too long!
Don't you just hate those faggots that claim to know already every time you try to tell them something?
!What was that?
>>729557154Just a box.
thanks my digger
It's a good thing I'm posting this obvious hint here for us to refer to later.
oops
>>729557668I hope we don't get lost...
Did you just call me the R word?
Although it serves absolutely no purpose, they made the stolen egg pile a healing spot.
That encounter brings us to the 2 hour mark of tonight's session, which means it's time for a short break. I'm gonna reheat some leftover turkey and have a smoke, then we will continue onwards towards the southern cave.
>>729558029What do you smoke?
OP I played this years ago when it was first translated. The last parts are a slog with the shitty encounter rate and spongy enemies that become largely generic fantasy monsters.
To return to the southern cave we must clear the area of Brachiosaurus. >>729558085I'm not a DUDE WEED internet ambassador, but because you asked first I'll say I got a 10 pack of Cloud mini-prerolls from a friend for Christmas. I prefer my joints filtered but legal weed is expensive so I'm not going to waste it.>>729558560So not much different from the rest of the game kek
Fun fact, standing still in dangerous water stops you from taking damage, but it also halts your passive health regen so you can't just cheat through it.
The swamplands are in sight, but the enemies have respawned in even greater numbers.
See that teeny sliver of green on our health bar? Sometimes while drinking healing water you overheal a tiny bit. I'm still not sure what triggers it.
>>729559073I wonder if it's a rounding thing
Here's a clip that demonstrates the difference between defending and not defending.
We had a lot of stats to catch up on, but the one I decided to round out first was Attack. Fight is a great fall back option if you roll a species with bad specials.
These guys could fuck us up before, but our Attack level has risen considerably since then.
Our critical hit broke the 1k record for the first time.
>>729552896Glad to see you guys were inspired by that evo thread from a few days ago This game really is something unique and interesting even if the core rpg gameplay isnt amazing. Pure Soul I would love a new game in this seriesalso as a gold card member monster fucker Lucifers final form is pretty neat haha
Horn still hurts though.
Having learned our lesson from being stranded in EXP deserts previously, we are eating everything until the game cuts us off. Our Attack attribute is near the evolution threshold so it doesn't take much to clear fights anymore.
>>729559598>BrachiosaurusOh so that's where the name comes from.
>>729559682Riveting gameplay. I was on the edge of my seat throughout those battles.
I shit you not, sometimes when I pause the game to save, an enemy respawns.
I don't think enemies stop respawning here, so I'm gonna invest our huge bank and continue the playthrough.
Right now every stat except for Wisdom is one nudge away from breaking its threshold.
At last!
>>729559971>brain the size of a walnut
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVMNvtTtvRg
It's dark in here.
We have to blindly run into this wall until we find out how to get that heart.
It's time to save the game and find out which attribute will take us deeper into the evolutionary tree.
Our position on the tree hasn't moved, so this fellow is likely a side grade to our old species. Let's see what other options we have.
Funny, it seems both Wisdom and Endurance lead to Polacanthus. I wonder what Attack transforms us into?
Vitality returns us to Diplodocus, while the three other attributes all transform us into Polacanthus. I suppose that makes Polacanthus our next branch to continue evolving from by default.
>>729560709If there's one thing I hated about evolution it's that it was damn near impossible to tell which direction you had to go to get further down the tree
>>729560651That's the most chopped Polacanthus I've ever seen
By adding Wisdom to a Polacanthus, we finally move along the tree and morph into another 'ceratops species. I think we'll stick with this guy for a while and see how he does in battle. I can tell we're close to the apex of our dinosaur evolutions.
yum
Shame you can't use any filters, the dithering hurts my eyes a lot for some reason.
>>729561034Our LP started out looking like this, but I don't know which people prefer. There aren't that many screen options in this emulator :(
>build a t rex>add wings and horns>call it a dragon
>when you become so christpilled that you willpower your way into living as a vegan t-rex
I wish I had thought to just record long conversations before to save myself the trouble of solving a billion captchas.
>>729561517Oh yeah that looks a lot better, not as excessively bright.
Time to test the strength of our new horn.
>>729561517>>729561404Zesty
LovingEveryLaugh
So this guy is hilariously strong, but now that we've tried him out it's time to splice our genes again. Our goal is to breach one of the four advanced evo lines at the bottom of the chart, while showcasing any sidegrades we discover along the way :)
If we wanted to reach the three other trees to our left we would have to use this guy as an intermediate. Let's see how strong he is before reloading and trying another attribute.
I tried running into this dinosaur on the world map to check our special attacks, but it triggered a cutscene instead of a battle.
>>729561990holy shit look at the muscles on that guy
After this conversation ended he hit me pretty hard.
After entering and exiting the cave we manage to respawn the random encounters.
Nothing interesting to see in the special move list. This guy is still strong enough to finish the chapter just by fighting everything, but we obviously have no plans to do so.
>>729562146your most interesting special moves will come in the mammalian era
This fellow does a lot of damage when Fighting.
We seem to be positioned right above one of the advanced gene lines. What if we tried continuing downwards from here?
We don't regain a badass attack like Crush or Horn, but Fangs is still better than Bite.
Except this guy's Fangs do 1600 fucking damage on a good roll. How much better can it get from HERE?
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
>>729562442your choice here will determine which of two trees of evolution you'll have access to in the next epochchoose well
Now that we're a badass t-rex all the evo thresholds are really expensive. Our goal now is to find out how to bypass this dickhead.
Talking to him again just causes his dialogue to repeat, and there isn't any water shallow enough to proceed from this peninsula. We might have to walk back through that cave, but our destination is no longer clear as we still haven't found Pteran.
>>729562770Well, we did recently pass by someone who said he'd lend a hand if there was anything bothering us..
Thankfully, our t-rex buddy in the cave is more than willing to help.
>>729562892Tyrano-BROrus.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
>>729563115Good ol Enix style bittersweet victories.
EVO veterans were probably waiting for this moment.
>>729563115>old friendDidn't you just meet?Oh well, hot chick alert.
>>729563115F
>>729563184>the way the head just sinks in like a cushionTHICC
>>729563184>Lucifer is a sexy womanThis is the best game ever made
Naturally you're supposed to refuse this bitch, but this is what happens if you say yes. Not as interesting as the other Game Overs that much I can say.
>>729563115
sex with lucifer
>>729563238What are you talking about? The head doesn't move.
>>729563326the flesh squishes a bit where Lucifer sits, making it look like sitting on a pillow
>>729562442>>729562610Oh shit really? When I played it I got to the part after the dinosaurs and wondered why the evolution tree was split in half and I couldn't get to the left hand side.
OH HOHOHOHOHOHOHOHO!
>>729563184ENTER
Our journey continues along a deep stretch of deadly water, but at this point our health bar is too high to even notice the damage.
>>729563380That's the towel.
We're not alone out here.
Is there a chart somewhere that shows all the things you can evolve into and what stats you need to raise to get them?
UH OH TENDIES ARE GONNA HAVE A MELTY
>>729563439wow, that towel changes into a dress pretty quickly. surprising that enix even cared enough to cover the naughty-bits.
T-rex is so fucking strong
>>729563602Fuck yeah, Omanyte
Let's stop for a moment and use those points we gained to breach another threshold. We have one more top tier species to unlock right below t-rex. But, what could it be, and which attribute unlocks it?
>>729563602Oh look, its a Xarquid
Attack appears to be completely maxed out. No further evolution is possible here.
Vitality is maxed out too. Only Wisdom and Endurance offer potential pathways, but we don't have enough points for either. We need a couple more prey to consume, or a lucky disaster.
FUCK YEAH ICHTHYOSAURUS
As we continue eating fish, we spot land just ahead.
There used to be complete giant evolutionary tree images with the in-game pictures of each creature for each chapter but I can't seem to find the fucking things.
Sadly after trying all four attributes it seems our evolution for this chapter is over. Clearly there is a finite number of evolutions you can unlock per chapter, and we missed the shorter path to Ultimate Conductor Tyranno. Oh well, Chad Rex is still an apex predator.
The end of this era feels like it's approaching fast. Time to take another break to stretch and piss.
>>729564017I'm pretty sure the very bottom row denotes the new forms you can take at the end of a chapter.
>>729564138Man, PC98 games STILL look good to this day, Enix knew what they were doing.
>>729564139In any case, OP has completely missed out on the chance to become human.
>>729564262Yeah? Well, the aliens in DBZ were cooler than the humans and saiyans anyways.
This grove seems to heal us despite the absence of water. We're sharing our spot with that dactyl looking nigga over there.
Oh it's Pteran.
Our t-rex here seems to have forgotten why we came looking for Pteran, so let's check out this glowing pool.
>>729564643holy shit is that a stargate
I WILL DEFEND YOU M'LADY
>>729564752BEGIN RESCUE MISSION
There's only one thing left for us to do now. Escape another extinction.
We found this village nearby.
>>729552896stop trying to brainwash people with this propaganda
>>729492041From the last thread, but therapsids like that guy were badass apex predators that absolutely dominated that era. They're usually called mammal-like reptiles because they're the link between the two and have a weird mix of attributes.
>>729564919What's with the Allosaur racism?
AMONG US
>>729564919>>729565062>thugs or AllosuarsAdd it to the list
Fuck, we need to head west to safety but have to rescue a kid in the complete opposite direction.
We find the boy in one of the pools of water to the right.
>>729565156So your wife wants you to help rescue as many creatures as possible, but then only gives you vague information about the upcoming threat, causing most creatures to laugh in your face.Oh well. Their loss.
As soon as we go back, shit goes down.
So these guys are prepared to die for us, but what if we were strong enough to kill an alosaur?
NANI!?
>>729565506not so cocky now now huh
I tried using Play Dead to reduce his defenses, but our Fangs still do nothing.
Goodbye... my friends...
>>729564262I've never taken the orc path. Do you become something other than human at Eden?
Scripted areas like this often deny you the ability to save.
>>729565701Unfortunately, no. Your final form is the same either way.
We survived, but at what cost?
This is fine.
surely they will beat the allosaurs and catch up soon
Cool lava.
>>729565852there's so many hearts laying around
Even if I collect them all I just maxed out all our attributes.
Fog gate???
This guy's trying to spook us.
anti-extinction light gate. trust the plan
Here's the most exciting part!
>>729566215>wants to save as many as possible>gatekeeps the safezoneGaia, you're a crafty one.
>>729566215No mammals allowed.

>>729566478Oh hey it's that one Toby Fox tweet
please insert disc 4 into the B drive
>satan departed into spaceAyys confirmed, and also being tortured by Satan?
>>729566569>>729566602Ratbros...it's our time...
>>729566538I always frame this scene as Lucifer having an orgasm as the meteor destroys the dinosaurs
>>729566648the story there is sadder still. The manual opens with a 2 billion year history leading into the game. The fifth planet and its people destroyed utterly, Lucifer's machinations spreading across the planets, evil and death reignthe final line is "the devil has come to Earth"
And that, my friends, is where tonight's LP thread ends. I have to work to keep a roof over my head, so if our next thread happens on a weekday it won't be as long as these last two. Most likely no earlier than 5-6 PM PST. See ya.
>>729566657Yeah doesn't this line up with the Ice Age chapter in the SNES game? But Gaia turned him into an even bigger dinosaur.
>>729566750get some rest OP, you've earned it
>>729566779The SNES game is heavily reimagined and has almost nothing in common with the PC98 game. For instance, in this game, you can remain a lizard all the way through to the end. It depends on how you evolve in the chapter OP just finished. It's referenced in the SNES game by having the final area be full of humanoid dinosaurs.
>>729566517>stegosaurus>in cretaceous
>>729566986There's also no Lucifer in the SNES game, the aliens are just irresponsibly dropping evolution orbs all over the place to experiment with earth life and this leads to a bunch of fucky mutants, and the final villain is instead the fuckiest mutant of all who's hellbent on raping Gaia.
>>729566986Yeah, OP is locked into lizardman path. If he'd managed to move to the left more on the evolution tree he would've become a mammal instead. And not just for the ice age in this new chapter. They're available from the start of chapter four.
>>729567096I should replay this sometime. I got the rat and squirrel once but that seemed like a dead end and I wound up turning back into a lizard.
Can you even complete EVO as a dino? I remember trying and eventually I had to evolve because I got my ass kicked.
Good thread OP
>>729552896Fuck yeah more EVO.
>>729556769If you go to Task Settings > Capture, there's a tickbox at the top you can untick to no longer capture the cursor.
>>729552896Cool
>>729552896oh hey, i know this gameisnt it the one where reaching modern human civilization is a bad ending?
Sweet, another one of these threads. Wish I found them earlier so I could read along as you played rather than playing catch-up.
>>729572229Yeah, evolving to modern industrial civilization is a bad ending because you repeat the mistakes of the lunarians, the good ending is wisdom-focused where you transcend your mortal body, defeat the cosmic incarnation of lucifer with the accumulated power of all physical evolution, then leave physical evolution behind, merging the consciousness of Earth and all its life into one and beginning the path of spiritual evolution. This is all part of God's plan btw. The actual abrahamic God.
