Let's not have revisionist history here, first few months game was plagued with numerous bugs, glitches and ran and lagged like ass even on good systems. If you ignore all that and just take into account story and gameplay, I agree. The game deserves better and had lot of potential but their choice of engine killed all hope.

it's a run of the mill mmo from that era, a wow killer like they made dozens of back then

It always was but only the first time through. It's only gotten worse with time because they've completely trivialized the questing, bosses, and open world in general in addition to pruning buttons and utilities from every class to reach parity with quasi-mobile games like WoW where you run around mashing a three button rotation completely unopposed. Planetary quests were nice until you had to do them again as a different class. I really think they could've met in the middle where you have to do all the normal progress for each side once until you get the turbo xp boost, but then again modern players have no attention span, so they most likely didn't have a choice.

They eschew the entire Empire vs Republic dynamic that they've been setting up in favor of the third party donut steel infinite empire of zakuul, which is just so epic and cool that it destroys both of the factions in a matter of weeks and essentially unseats your character from his place in whatever faction-class position he has reached (instantly kills off a shit ton of supporting characters too, none of which I was happy to see go) to make them a plucky resistance leader.

This exact formula repeats a dozen or so times (I am not fucking joking), and even when it finally does throw you a bone and you finally kill him, a family member takes his place (I think first it's the son, then the father, then the daughter), and you repeat the whole fucking cycle all over again.
There is not a single line of dialogue or interesting character or plot point that makes any of it worth your time. Utterly fucking worthless, it completely hamstrings the setting and drops ALL the character potential from the class storylines, and garuntees that the galactic cold war will not see a satisfying conclusion.

Having written all this, I now remember that you do actually get to execute the chancellor of the Republic on galactic television after she betrays you, which I have to admit was pretty kino. But other than that single bright moment, it's a pointless, hollow, joyless shitshow.

it's because the Knight story is most involved with the elements of the previous games(i.e. Scourge and the Emperor, so basically what the novel set up). And because Knight has arguably the most connections to Emperor, that importance carries through all the expansions.

From my experience The Imperial Agent is the best due to being genuinely well written and something completely different for star wars. The Sith Warrior is very good if you want to be comically evil or pragmatic and manipulative. Those are the two that are unanimously agreed to be good. Personally for me I really enjoyed the Bounty Hunter, I've always wanted to play as one and I found a lotta fun just going from planet to planet hunting my target with my weird crew

I always thought people like this were crazy so I spent whatever it was for a 1 month subscription to unlock the rest of the game to see what was up. Mother fuckers were absolutely correct.

The sad thing about SWTOR is that if EA wasn't so short-term greedy, they could have made one of the best Star Wars games. TOR actually has some good writing, like the subversion with Vemrin at the start of the Sith Warrior story. Basically, your character is everything wrong with the sith, and Vemrin had to fight for everything he had. So, if EA took TOR's writing, and choose to make a heavily modified version of Jedi Academy, we could have had kino. Plus, they could have made more money in the long term because that style of combat pairs better with controllers than the regular MMO kind, meaning they could easily port that to consoles.

SWTOR, for all its faults, introduces the most complex portrayal of the Sith as a philosophy and a society. Sure, you have your Palpatines, Vaders, and outright retards. Then you have the noble demons you can play as or meet. Teaming up with a Jedi to kill a rival Sith Lord that is a greater threat to the Republic too and the guy wishing the Jedi and Sith could meet more like that instead of enemies. Lana is probably the most normal and level-headed Sith who manages to be a charming person despite the whole using people as pawns thing

Who should've been the Sith Emperor in place of Vitiate?

My idea was a survivor of the original purge of Korriban. The most respected, feared, and powerful Sith alive. The problem? He's lived for so long and become such an embodiment of the Force he is no longer completely conscious in the present moment, leaving the Dark Council to rule in his stead. When he reaches points of clarity, conflicts across Sith space cease and the Sith Empire immediately becomes a devastating force to be reckoned with.

Like Nihilus but less a blackhole of the force and a being extremely close to being one with it without fully losing their physical form. A play on the Jedi philosophy ironically by one of their enemies.

And to introduce some grayness, he'd lean into the whole genocide that happened on Korriban. It being the one thing he can still remember clearly after all the centuries. His people dying from being cut off from the force because the Jedi didn't understand them. The infighting that likely came after. That, after everything, only he remains and can remember what it was like to truly be Sith.

Battle dialogue about how he can't ever forgive the Jedi for what they've done. How, if you convinced some Sith to betray him, his brethren could stoop so low. Confusion as to who some apprentices he can barely remember not being there to help him. Stuff like that.

His dying words, from being killed or maybe even convinced to give up finally:

"Forgive me... I could only save myself in the end."

"...Korriban. Home. At last."

As far as I'm concerned, the story ended with Valkorion's final death. I now live with my wife Lana in an isolated cottage. Theron and his non-human wife also come to visit from time to time. Jedi & Sith fighting again? Nah, Tis a peaceful existence.
