Would you be fine with this kind of writing if the games were still fun to play?
yeah
>>729613691Sure.Had my fun with Borderlands 2, despite Burch's garbo writing.
>>729613691Randy and Tameem are both gen Xers. What a retarded image.
Someone explain how a Marvel quip is different from the scene in saving private ryan where after they storm the beaches of normandy, one of the soldiers picks up a hitler youth knife and hands it to a Jewish soldier, who then says "Now it's a Shabbat challah cutter". Both seem like silly quips to me.
Yeah.I'd be "fine."Not ecstatic. Just, fine.
>>729613691when given the choice between woke games and never being able to afford hardware ever again (thanks Sam altman), gamers chose the latter
>>729613691No. Because I have principles and don't financially support evil people.
No, I'd be too busy cringing to enjoy the rest of the game fully.Carmack said story in games doesn't matter, I'd argue it doesn't until it's so shit and gay that it becomes unplayable.
Just sounds like another buzzword that click bait websites and youtube channels use
>>729613851marvel quips don't care for context, people say whedon coined it with buffy but if buffy had marvel quips an episode like The Body would have been impossible.
>>729613691People were fucking fine with milennial writing in 2012. What changed?
>>729614676Gen Z grew up and found it cringe
I would if there was an option to mute the dialogue
>>729613691>Randy Pitchford>born in 1971>millennial
>>729613691I dont see how the game being fun magically makes the writing better. It just means I'd just skip every cutscene/mute dialog instead of just dropping the game altogether.
>>729614676Too many games/movies/etc started doing it and everybody got tired of it.As always, moderation is the key.
>>729614921these kinds of arguments always point to the wrong generationlike nowadays that zoomers are getting blamed for shit when the oldest ones aren't even 30 yet and would not be behind any meaningful decision making
>>729615149Gen X and Gen Alpha keep getting away with shit because everything gets blamed on the generations on either side of them.
>>729613851"Marvel quips" are used as a way to socially dominate another person, to turn a conversation into a western version of Izzat for insecure millennial beta males. Boomers do this but as ball busting, its different with millennials and left winging nerds use it to appear higher IQ and morally superior than you. The best example are new marvel movies, rick and morty, and starwars movies. The scripts are loaded with this garbage. If you ever spoken to a marvel fanboy you will know what I'm talking about. They will try to larp as Rick from rick and morty in ever interaction. It drives me insane.Real quips are witty dialogue with context, not some progressive soap box sarcasm that are "marvel quips".
Fallout New Vegas: Old World Blues and Portal 2 are excellent examples of millennial writing that is before it was sniffing its own farts
>>729614676Well in the 2000s you had a lot of self-serious dialogue and relative outsiders like Joss Whedon were able to play foil to that by creating more joking or self-aware characters. Buffy the Vampire Slayer didn't invent the sarcastic dialogue that would later characterize Millennial Writing but it and the Joss Whedon Avengers scripts were huge influences. The problem is that by 2025, all we have are self-aware sarcastic characters. So the parody falls completely flat since the genuine article almost doesn't exist. Also I remember a lot of negative reactions to ME3 in general and EDI in particular, so don't think that it was all fine in 2012.
>Millennial writing>Look inside>Gen X writingevery time
>>729613691No.I'm playing Titanfall 2 for the first time. It's a pretty great game. The gameplay is fun, the visuals are interesting (even if it tends to be a bit to washed out/blue-green most of the time), the game is full of imaginative concepts. It's a solid 8/10 for me so far. But one of the things dragging it down, you have these interactions with your mech "BT", who keeps talking to you over comms. You usually have an option to respond with one of two dialogue options and usually one or both of the options is a shitty joke. One or two jokes would be fine, but it's every single comm interaction. And I have a feeling this is a pretty well written game compared to a lot of crap on the market rn. Millenials weren't responsible for this game though. It was the Gen X devs at Respawn.
>>729613691No. The problem with Millennials is that they are forever entrapped in endless reference and homage. I want new stories.
>>729616772>I want new stories>none of that “subversive” stuff though, just the same story with different names!
>>729613691This board loves to hate millennial writing because it makes you all feel smarter than you actually are. You aren't special, literally anyone is able to tell this shit is bad writing at first glance, it's that demonstrably bad. You're not some sort of cultured video games connoisseur because you were able to tell that Forspoken's or Borderlands' dialogue was terrible./v/ is helpless when it comes to forming an opinion on any anything that isn't obviously terrible. Take the Divinity 3 trailer released a few weeks ago. There were entire threads of morons throwing a tantrum over how it was "glorifying" evil pagan rituals and human sacrifice when the entire point of the trailer was that the ritual and sacrifice were BAD. But because there was never anyone in the trailer who went "I don't know about this guys, this feels evil!" the average /v/tard couldn't grasp the message of what was being conveyed.Millennial writing exists specifically because of people like you, philistines whose only exposure to the concepts of plot and dialogue comes through video games, but it hurts too much for you to admit that.
>millennial writing>look inside>it's written by boomers
>>729613691No, bad writing means the people in charge of the gameplay are also reddit leftoids with no talent at all
>>729617025After the tenth or so girlboss, you actually start missing damsels in distress.
Outer Wilds comes to mind and it's still great, but I do wish the writing was better.
anyone who says borderlands 2 has good gameplay is lying to you
>>729613691>millennial writing>they're not millennialshuh
>>729617172That's why it's so bad. It's boomers, or more accurately committees of boomers, trying to write in a way that appeals to the widest possible audience. There might be a few millennials on the writing team, but they're being directed by people who have no idea what they're doing other than making money.
>>729613691but /v/ loves Dispatch for its writing
>>729613691They want inter-generational warfare because they don't want you fighting a class or racial war. Writers have never represented their respective generations. Writers have always been insufferable egomaniacs going back to the dawn of civilization.
I don’t play games for the “writing”
>>729613691Yeah but Borderlands is the only real example I can think of. Never played BL3 but from what I've heard, the gameplay isn't enough to justify the shitty writing
>>729613851Marvel quips generally involve reducing each character to the same person for the sake of a line, because the screenwriters refuse to let any opportunity go.They also try to be clever rather than funny and have no regard for the tone. To put it another way, imagine batman forever's Mr Freeze making stupid puns. Then imagine someone making a minute effort to be "witty". Then imagine that every single character gets warped into making ice quips whenever the opportunity arises too. That's why people hate marvel quips.
>>729614676Citadel DLC is pure fucking cringe.
>>729613851Marvel quips feel like they’re insulting the audiences intelligence by either having the characters making light of dangerous or traumatic situations or some kind of obnoxious meta commentary. Han Solo saying “great kid dont get cocky” isn’t a quip but something relative to the moment. A genocidal robot saying “clearly you have never made an omelette” which just comes out of nowhere is Whedons bullshit philosolosphy of undercutting sincerity with a joke.
>>729613691I don't see how gameplay has any effect on writing quality or vice versa.
>>729613691I don't even think that it is the necessarily the problem. These are just normalfag words.
Randy is based doeHe makes you faggots piss and shit yourselves in rage
Writing for millennials or BY millennials?
>>729613691>Millenial Writing>look inside>Gen X Joss Whedon Writing
>>729621514Because it appeals to millenials you dumb catnigger poster.
>focus, M
>>729613691Can you explain what millennial writing is to you? I assume to you it is political. To me it is>Nihilism out the ass>Every character must be a douchebag or something. Because nice guys are stupid>Constant references. Non stop>constant sex talk to an uncomfortable degree>extremely unnecessary violence>everything ends either depressingly or "subverted"I assume by your image it's something somethuing libs
>>729613851>randomly walk into room>thing going on>randomly talk about how someone in the corner is playing Galaga and you noticed even though they thought you wouldn't!That's marvel.
>>729623331Oh and everyone uses "fuck" like it is puncutation and have to say "cum" and other shit you'd never fucking do even with a close friend.
>>729613691That dude is some old fuck boomer, not a millennial
>>729616078>Izzatdamn this term has spread a lot
>>729617054This
>>729613691No, kill millenials and behead millenials.
>>729613691Yeah, I’d just mute the dialogue and turn off subtitlesIn reality we get millennial writing + mediocre gameplay
since you guys are such masterful writers, I'm having a bit of writer's block. I have my main villain in an "isekai" story I'm writing that the king goes crazy because he realizes that the world is literally just VR and he's trying to rid the ancient crystals (data servers) so that he could reformat the world as brand new into a perfect utopia. does that sound fucking stupid? it feels like it is but no matter how I brainstorm it, I can't reasonably get the king to go from a kind good leader to an omncidal maniac who's having an existential crisis without making him seem silly. I could make it so the experience melts his mind with googoo corruption juice but even then that seems weird. I can't even get the protagonists to be completely "no ur wrong!" because the currently world is a shit and a reset doesn't seem that bad all considering.
>>729613851There is no sense of drama because the writer is ashamed of it. Somber moments have to be ruined with quips. Moments of despair have to have a joke to drag people out of it. Loki just HAD to be cut off by being swung around like a doll. There's no sense of timing or decompression, it's always immediate and jarring and explicitly designed to spoil dramatic tension. The writing tells you this is schlock you're experiencing. You shouldn't be taking this seriously, the characters themselves don't take it seriously.
>>729613691Yeah, Dead Island 2's writing sucked ass but the game was still a heap of fun to play.
>>729624608You're writing Isekai, people expect crazy. Is it a multiplayer game? If it is, add a ""grand vizier,"" a hacker that's coaxing the GenAI NPC King to open his eyes to the truth of the game for shits and giggles. Maybe this Vizier is an agent sent by a rival game studio to sabotage the game, or an activist who hates AI being used in games and is exploiting its flaws to incite the disaster he warned the devs about. The King should experience the revelation as some eldritch horror, like the uncovering an Akashic Record that he is not ready to accept. Also, finish Dragons Dogma 1 if you've been putting it off. No comment.
>>729625245Nah, It's 13 sentinels like twist mixed in with a bit of SMT. The true background is that God and Demons have come to battle on Earth while humans have converted themselves into data to avoid being caught in between. I'm just having trouble really "plotting" the ending of this part of the story while being vague to hint why the king is going crazy but not outright giving the whole background. It's easier in a game since you can have hidden logs and dark souls type shit but in a book? You can't really "hide" info.
>>729613691That style of writing is just the shitty capsule to make it easier to swallow their evil message.
>>729613691Eh, no. I play bad games all the time when the writing is good or interesting. I can't see myself doing the reverse.
>>729625431You can hide information from the reader. Start making statements that either rely on or imply the existence of something that is unknown. Ask questions that only make sense if there was something in the background going on. Leave signs that point to it. If there's a nuclear bomb you want to tease, you talk a nuclear bomb shaped outline around it.
>>729624608what if the VR world is actually being used by his daughter to cope with grief, and so he only looks crazy to those that think he is destroying their world, and it gives you free reign to have him commit as many atrocities as possible and everyone will still root for him because none of it was real
>>729613691I'm 38 and don't know what millennial writing is, but that's probably because I don't touch new games.
>>729613691It's unfair that it's called Millenial Writing when Gen Xers like Joss Whedon are responsible for it
