Whats the worst localization in games?

millennials ruin everything holy sht
I dont have the image on me but in Happy Home Designer, if a villager is reading manga they complain about localizers doing a bad job and it comes across as NoA being passive aggressive nobody likes their work.
>>729616405>you can just magically realize you're actually a girlWhat is this mental illness
>>729616493>comes acrossI’m sure that was intentional. they basically called you retarded and schizophrenic for liking paper mario in TOK
This one line of dialogue had the actual splatoon devs step in and tell NoA to stop making shit up for marina's characterization.
i think its dumb to complain about localization. some games, like Mario RPGs, really want to have fun and stylish dialogue with a lot of character. and what this means is that, if you need to translate it in other languages, you need to allow the translators to take liberties to make the dialogue feel natural. a direct and literal translation would be too dry for the kind of dialogue they are going for. they want it to have a lot of style and personality. demanding that a game like this be a literal, 1:1 translation is demanding that it have an entirely different tone.
>>729616773Do you know where I can read more properly translated dialogue from nintendo games? I rather like Marina and would like to better understand the correct version of the character.
>>729616509trannies
>>729616959You'd have to learn Japanese. Nintendo universally, has some of the worst translations in the industry. This is the standard for them and it's been this way for decades. Nothing going to get re-translated unless there's an industry reset.
>>729616235What's the Japanese equivalent of this line? How can I judge the localizer without the original for context?
>>729616938I liked frog's original speech in chrono trigger SNES but the old localizations for CT and Mario RPG were full of errors too.
>>729617239>ペーパーマリオ カラースプラッシュ実況Not OP, haven't played color splash but you should be able to find it in a playthough. I could find it if someone could tell me where it might be.
>>729617239By virtue of it being 3DS/Wii U era NoA when they were at their absolute worst, you already know.
I'd rather have shitty dialogue that keeps things interesting.
>>729616368Huh I'm gonna go listen to that again
>>729616938I'll concede that there are some liberties that can make a game's translation better. Puns obviously should be replaced with different puns. Character names that are difficult to pronounce should be modified. Usage of English terms in the original script that sound unnatural to a native speaker also should be changed. What we see from every localizer in the industry are a lot of changes that are nothing like that. Attempts to insert political messaging. Jokes made at the expense of the audience that plays the games. Inserting out of place jokes during serious scenes. Replacing jokes that do survive the language barrier with shitty internet memes. None of these are good for the game, they betray a hatred of the original script and Japanese games in general. The people behind these translations will tell you as much on twitter, so why give them the benefit of the doubt?

>>729617650>Nobody has a fan translation wiki or anything like that?Nobody notices anything. Doesn't help that only recently have nintendo allowed international players to access japanese text and voice. There's a super blatant example in Pikmin 3, The voice over is in english in both Japanese and english but for some reason the Wii U version has altered script that was reverted back to matching the Japanese english voice-over in the Switch re-release. Obvious, but no one talks about it and everyone just assumes it must be accurate because professional translation.

That's backwards and regressive.

It's not just official shit. Fan translations are getting localized down as well with censorship.
>>729616959Marina was fortunately corrected somewhat over time. She fangirls over Pearl and is otherwise reserved and shy. Nintendo of America threw all of that out and turned her into Marie 2.0, aka she regularly insulted and/or made fun of Pearl. But then the Octo Expansion DLC came around and they obviously realized that Marina hating Pearl made zero fucking sense so they wrote a bit of dialogue in saying that she was merely pretending to make fun of her. They rewrote most of the news dialogue after that. You can probably find before/after comparisons if you ask /ink/
>>729616459did you try to change the language to 日本語
>>729618319Another blatant example is advance Wars Days of Ruin/Dark Conflict. Translating the same japanese script, yet there are text differences that can't be explained as being regional. There's no universe where silence and a quip are both accurate translations. There's obviously something wrong here but it doesn't get pointed out. It's very odd how these inconsistencies can exist and get completely tuned out.
>>729619781And that's just talking about differences in the English. Pikmin 3 had an english voice-over. ファミコンウォーズDS 失われた光 had 2 English translations. If actually consider the japanese text it's way worse.
>>729618350This is how we win Kamala sisters. Not by elections, but by demasters.

It's probably not the worst, but for a AAA title, Persona 5's localization was pretty bad on release. Not only were there mistranslations, but there was also just a bunch of bizarre lines and dialogue which made no sense.
>>729620552Everything else is just obvious, you look at it, you see the problems. But say there's even the smallest degree of nuance. Something actually story or character significant.>吠え面をかかせて,目をさまさせたい...She wanted to make him "make a tearful face". She wanted to make him cry and come to his senses. Imagine, long lost daughter returns, he's so overwhelmed he starts crying and they reunite. It's kind of obvious why it's phrased the way it is in Japanese. And somehow they fucked it up. This is a game for toddlers. The other stuff is on purpose. Here they unironically missed the emotional beat. In a children's game. They somehow fuck-up between Nintendo's English releases. There are fuck-ups between different English branches of Nintendo. You can notice problems just by looking at the Japanese version and with a passing familiarity with the language those problems increase multiple folds. All of this being true, you'd at-least expect basic reading comprehension. And they can't even manage that. They get paid to fail at literally everything.

>>729617783>Theres some edge case scenarios where it would be basically impossible to do 1:1 translation like rhythm heavenTranslation by definition involves the preservation of meaning and intent between two languages. It involves the communication of one culture to another. If something cannot be translated into the other language, leave it and explain it. That way, you teach the reader something new about a foreign culture - every otaku knows how honorifics work at this point. Making shit up or "spicing up the translation" (which nine times out of ten involves a failed writer inserting their own biases into the original work) suppresses the original culture in favour of the translator's culture. It is cultural colonialism. These sorts of translations are never done in good faith and these excuses are just lies.
>>729617783Rhythm Heaven isn't even consistent
>>729617783>>729616938I tire of "edge cases" and "literal, 1:1". Why don't we discuss everything else. The basic comprehension errors. The complete lack of emotional maturity. The raw lazniess and incompetence that the industry is drowning in. I don't understand how translators can talk about "da nucnaces of translation" when there's proofreading errors littering their scripts.
>>729624218>The basic comprehension errors. The complete lack of emotional maturity. The raw lazniess and incompetence that the industry is drowning in.Because this doesn't make for a quality thread that generates the discussion required to have it stay on the board for more than 5 minutes. Because anyone capable of identifying these things isn't in these threads to begin with, since... know what they're up to? Oh, right, playing games in Japanese and not caring about what EOPs are "suffering" with.

>>729624424>Because anyone capable of identifying these thingsI mean if you have functioning eyes and basic literacy, there's nothing stopping you from looking at pic related and noticing. Doesn't take skill honestly.
>>729624739That isn't a basic comprehension error. That is a case of throwing the entire script out and making up new text from whole cloth based on the mere suggestion of the original text.
>>729624782It falls under "lack of emotional maturity" in my eyes.
>>729624496You little rascal, you actually had me going for a moment
>>729625125Oh shit, the scene is from Partners in Time.Disregard everything, I'm wrong twice.
>>729624854You can't even identify at what point the text went from its raw translation to its finalized form. You have no way to know who is ultimately responsible. A raw translation most likely fell into the hands of an editor down the line who rewrote it, but most likely the raw translation was purely competent. But let's not get too technical here. Let's talk about when it's OK because you "personally like it" which, surely, we can find in something like EarthBound, which features whole-cloth rewrites from top to bottom.
>>729624854On that note, the funniest part about localization discourse is that anyone can get in on it. Under normal circumstances you'd think you'd need to know japanese. Theoretically you have to read the source text to know whether the translated text is correct. But in practice you just need eyes. You can show the japanese and english next to eachother and it's self-explanatory. You can show different versions of the same game next to eachother and it's self-explanatory. You can just look at the English text think something is off and it's self-explanatory(there is luck roll here). You can even not look at any game text and just read an interview, and they admit to it. If you can see, you can contribute.

(insane case worth looking up, translator later got cucked by a dude named Gandalf became Tolkien's #1 hater in Sweden)
>localizer inserts meme du jour into dialogueThis is one of the more heinous offences.
>>729638249>do not translate it into what someone would realistically say in the target languageI thought we wanted 1:1 translations

>>729635310Just fuck him in a manly non-gay way you dumb fag.
>>729616235ENTER>removes all cutscenes>removes all dialogue>removes all decisions and branching paths>removes 16 levels
>>729638507Yes, 1:1 translations of what's actually said, not word-by-word nonsense.
>>729638951>removes 16 levelsWhat? Why?
>>729638518English Dragon Quest localizations are fucking awful even if that particular example wasn't handled too badly. But there's a reason people don't trust localizers in the first place.
>>729639012not him but i'd imagine it's got something to do with the>removes all decisions and branching pathspart
>>729622191They couldn’t have just changed it to “Darn it!” ?
>>729639032I still don't understand why those faggots keep changing nameAnd not even japan to western name to keep a playword like xenoblade, no they went from Martina to Jade for ????
>>729639164>no they went from Martina to Jade for ????Guv, this bird's greener den ol' King Trode 'imself, i's no wonder she's called "Jade" on account-a lookin' like one eh?
>>729639164Lots of franchises do that for some reason. It's especially fucked up with Nintendo games that have separate English translations for burgerland and Europe, both of which change the original name to something different, making it really clunky for fans to discuss the games online.
>>729639012You occasionally end in the same levels doing similar objectives in the different story paths. Doing all of them in one route would make the game feel bloated.
>>729616235Localisation is bad when the writing ends up bad. I could not give less of a shit about the original intent if I enjoy the writing in front of me
How about the time they cut about 80% of the dialog because they thought it was unimportant to convey the important parts of the story
>>729637569>STD
>>729616235Yo-kai Watch 3 had a *hits roof of car* meme added in. I'm gonna guess a lot of people already don't remember what that meme was.
>>729616493Treehouse was incredibly censor-happy at the time and did anything Twitter commanded. They were passive aggressive in like everything around that period.
>>729618085Gay people are allowed to exist. Just not in my vidya.
>>729630306Whatever the djt guide is in the current year is probably alright. Learning Japanese is fucking easy. First, you learn kana, write them out 50 fucking times each or do some stupid mnemonic shit for no reason. Now you can read 50% of all text you encounter after a whole 2 hours of study, congratulations.Next you do some kind of vocab in anki. I did core2k, I hear there are meme ones these days that teach you more useful words than 議員 because the frequency list isn't taken from newspapers, it doesn't fucking matter, all that matters is that you learn about 2000 words. Then you learn grammar, if you're an English native you do Japanese the Manga Way, if you're an ESL you do Tae Kim or Cure Dolly or some retarded shit. Then you supplement this with Dictionary of Japanese Grammar, or these days I bet the kids are just asking chatgpt to explain grammar poorly to them instead. And finally, you mine cards from whatever you're reading. Shit like Yomitan lets you import words into new cards from your browser with a couple of clicks, learn 20 new cards a day which translates to 200-300 reps a day, which should take you about 20-30 minutes a day. Congratulations, you are now fluent after you learn 20k words, in total this will take you about 3 years.
>>729640407Frequency lists mean fuck-all. If it's a word and it exists, it's common.I heard 燻り出す in a show today and it is probably "rarer" in frequency lists than almost anything else you'll find, but I would consider this something that anyone would and should know.
>>729639342NoA would just rather you not know what a Japan is.
