The actual game is fine, ranging from the aesthetics and story being very well-done to the combat being okay if repetitive. I'm glad Yoko Taro said he was open to porting it to modern systems and giving it the Nier Replicant treatment. It certainly deserves it.For a franchise as a whole, Parasite Eve. Third Birthday is actually a fun shooter, but the story is beyond shit. If they managed to mix the ATB mechanics of Parasite Eve 1 with the third-person shooter controls of Third Birthday (or really mix and match them) and make the story not insane schizo babble, then Square Enix would be cooking some great shit with what they have. Fortunately, they won't touch the series ever again to ruin it further.

I can't find it now, but I remember seeing an article about Kingpin's development. IIRC the game was originally going to have the player recruit members to their gang, go on missions, and take over territory. Eventually, they'd have enough territory to take on the final level. The game got fucked by Congress and the "video games make kids violent" crowd.
