Never actually tried Splatoon what made it such a hit for many?
it wasnt another hitscan crouching slowpoke wannabe counterstrike split second time to kill game. except the snipers, why do snipers ruin every game theyre in?
People saw it as the second coming of Jet Set Radio
>>729623185>Stylish aesthetics>Catchy Music>Actually fun and addicting>New IP from nintendo when they were known for releasing cashgrabs and derivatives from their old stablished franchises.>Decently unique for a genre as samey as shooters during the 7th/8th generation>Babies first shooter too>In a console with no competition like the WiiUIt was the right moment and the right time. And the game IS good, the campaign is a wonderful solo adventure mode that well stands on its own and the multiplayer is TF2 tier levels of fun.
>>729623185Squid pussy
>>729624475>TF2 tier levels of fun.the only things holding squid back is no custom maps/servers and being matchmaking autism. the things that plague all modern pvp games. the game mechanics are amazing.
>>729624728bomb ass squid pussy*
Client-side hit confirms allowed a lot of people with shit internet to think they were good. Aka Nintendo can't into netcode.
Is splatoon the only class-based shooter to not fall for the healer role meme? And yes, I'm counting it as a class-based shooter. The weapons classes are literally called classes.
>>729623185It's very mechanically interesting. Not really like anything else. The ink mechanic functions several different ways, not only a physical manifestation of your team's territory, but also your primary mode of movement, ammo reload, and offers stealth. It's very fast paced, and at least in 1 there was a lot of room and freedom to the maps. It's also a console shooter that figured out the aiming problem by simply using gyro as a mouse alternative.Gameplay wise I remember people would post this webm a lot in Splat 1 days as a rough example of the potential of its mechanicsOf course the overall art direction was another thing. It's themed after the sea with kinda radicool 80's/90's shit or whatever, with unique, appealing player characters, a weird music direction with several genres featured, a fun albeit short singleplayer with a good final boss, interesting hints of lore fed in similarly weird ways, that kind of stuff. It has some issues certainly but it's appealing from multiple angles
>>729623185>game where you shoot goo at loli squids with big butts in spatsGee I wonder
>>729627372That's a rather loose definition of class basedBut probably, since there's no real use case for dedicated healing. Most weapons 1-3 tap and you heal in ink over 2-3 seconds.
>>729627384>radicool 80's/90's shit or whateverSpoken like a true zoomer.
>>729627747Yeah I'm 26, not much to do about it
>>729624728Me and Inklings: https://files.catbox.moe/2jzhxv.mp4
The good players are on /vg/. You will just get coomer discussion here.
>>729627372thats like saying cod is class-based because your loadouts are called classes
>>729627384What issues?Man I wish jewtendo didn't start charging for online, I would have gotten s2 and 3 too.
>>729624475>the multiplayer is TF2 tier levels of fun.Was. Unless you're playing salmon run the devs shit the bed with Splatoon 3, another example why you should never listen to compfags
>>729629013At its foundation, the networking sucks ass. For what they encourage as a competitive game, it's fucking a fucking 16 tick peer to peer connection. To compare, CS2 uses 64 on its official servers. This is very much felt while you're playing, particularly if you're using brellas or trying to dodge using the squid roll. The devs also continue insisting that you play their way with the queues and rotations. This was especially bad in 1 and 2 where there was only one ranked queue with one rotation for 2 hours, 4 in Splat 1. It's not even an even rotation, so for example the rotations could go TC -> RM -> CB -> TC -> SZ. You could wait all fucking day to play the mode you wanted, only for it to get shit maps like shellendorf and moray or something.I frankly don't know what they're trying to do with the rank system either. The medal system in 3 is good, but I don't even know how to succinctly describe 2's ranking system and 3's works in such a way that you're easily boosted and carried up to further ranks you don't belong in. 1's ranking system (and X rank's elo) are very simple, you gain points upon winning and lose points upon losing, and the higher you got the more you'd have to win to break even with your losses. It works, is easily understandable, and your results are immediate (as opposed to 3's series sytem)Then the maps also steadily took a dive over the series since they were at least ATTEMPTING to pander to compfags but not even compfags liked the direction they took in 3, though they eventually got the message, so the later 3 maps are alright and they tweaked othersAlthough however much I write about it, they're more niggling things about the game rather than things that especially take away from it. I still have a combined 2000 hours in the series or something like that
>>729623185mechanically I unironically think it's the best videogame I've ever playedthe way it manages to cram pretty much every modern shooter mechanic (reloading, health regen, running, stealth, wall climbing, stamina management, buffing allies/debuffing enemies, area control) in a single loop (shoot ink/turn into squid) is nothing short of astounding, I can't think of anything else that's comparableand of course its merits don't stop here, it popularized gyro aiming as a credible alternative to mouse and keyboard for console shooters, its campaigns are genuinely fun 3D action platformers (with octo expansion being a phenomenal game in its own right), it has a fantastic horde mode with some of the greatest enemy design I've ever seen in any game period etc etcit's an underrated series at the end of the day, it should be praised much more as pure game design genius if this industry wasn't worthless
>>729630210it would be praised more if it wasnt a nintendo game and gatekept behind a shitty console
>>729623185Unironically gyro aiming. It was the first big budget game to do it.
>>729627372Splatoon is an arena shooter.
>>729623768Just make your goal to sneak up behind and hunt down the enemy snipers and you will win every match they're in
>>729623185>Never actually triedWell go try it then. The fuck?
>>729632401Most maps don't have flank paths, they are all full with chokepoints
>>729623185>Entirely unique shooter>Appealing aesthetic>MarieThe trifecta to success.
>>729628207But the use of the term weapon class in splatoon very much fits the concept of a class-based shooter. Just look at how vastly differently roller kits play to charger kits for example. Or brella kits play to bucket kits.>>729631552What does arena shooter even mean? I see two definitions, following quake-style movement or having weapons and powerups spawn into the map, and splatoon does neither.
>>729633054look how different shieldfags play to snipers
>>729630959Skyward Sword
Making salmon room at rotation
>>729623185It was different enough to not be another CoD clone for children. It's more like Mario Sunshine online and that's a good thing. Personally I think the series should do more with the platforming
>>729629013 what >>729629860 says is true. Some days I can have a DC player in a match every 4 rounds. Some days I just DC, and I use an ethernet line.
