Around the time I was 17 I stopped since I wanted to explore my own ideas instead of essentially 'continuing to play with toys someone else built.Also to answer the OP question, hell no. If it's a genuine mental illness then that's going to make for terrible parenting - of which an extremely important part is empathy. If someone just matures and mellows out over time that's a different story.
