I think it's because gaming has evolved into 2 camps: the games you play as a job (Path of Exile, Call of Duty) and AAA cinematic action adventure (God of War, Spiderman), and there's nothing in between.Could be wrong.

The company's got your whole experience locked down from the moment you boot it up. There's that fake "premium" feeling. Then you check its storefront and realise there's really not that much in there that interests you, but you keep using it because the total cost was still much lower than a beefy gaming PC. That's how you cope.
