Why was it called final fantasy 8 if it was not a sequel to 7?
It's the 7th sequel to Final Fantasy I.

You bite in expecting FF7 sugar rush and instead your face caves in. That’s on you. If you don’t spit it out immediately and actually chew, there’s a sweet center. Not every game has to jingle keys in your face and call you a hero. Some of us enjoy the suffering before the reward.

FFVIII was a weird turning point for me. Or rather just some kind of learning moment. I wasn't on the internet a whole lot at the time but generally if there was a game I did or didn't like people on the internet seemed to think the same way. I quite liked 8, but man people were ruthless about it. Utterly hated it. Just.. did not compute for me. I knew different folks different strokes and everything but that was the first time it really felt like I was going against the grain with it. Then it happened again with FFIX. I really wasn't to hot on 9 but people loved it. Just felt like I fell into some weird bizarro world for a few years there.
