During the Xbox 360 era, Microsoft nearly defeated Sony. Now, the Xbox is basically dead.

With poos you lose
>>729627470>nearly defeated SonyThey just had an advantage against Sony for a single generation. The PS4 wiped the floor with them again soon after Mattrick destroyed the brand image of the company in 2015.Mattrick's decision making should remind you, none of them deserve a shred of respect and have every intent of annihilating their own company should the opportunity for more money potentially arise.
>>729630969Nintendo also failed that generation, and yet they could recover with the Switch, despite having no backwards compatibility.>"We lost the worst generation to lose in the Xbox One generation, where everybody built their digital library of games. When you go and you're building on Xbox we want our Xbox community to feel awesome, but this idea that if we just focused more on great games on our console that somehow we're going to win the console race doesn't really lay into the reality of most people.>"Like 90 percent of the people every year who walk into a retailer to buy a console are already a member of one of the three ecosystems and their digital library is there. This is the first generation where the big games that they're playing were games that were available last gen, when you think about Fortnite, Roblox, and Minecraft.>"The continuity from generation to generation is so strong. I see a lot of pundits out there that want to go back to the time where we all had cartridges and discs, and every new generation was a clean slate. And you could switch the whole console share, that's just not the world that we are in today. There is no world where Starfield is an 11 out of 10 and people start selling their PS5s, that’s not going to happen.Phil Spector was just a massive retard, most of the failures of Xbox are all on him.
>>729629417We ended up in the Xbox One future. Everybody was deathly concerned about the Kinect listening and now every gay retard as an Alexa or whatever. Concerned about playing games off discs that nobody cares about anymore except Limited Run scalpers.Where did this energy go? About privacy and ownership? >>729630310>They will force all of their studios to include AI slop in their games.>And they have plenty of studios and franchises.see I might be worried about that if any of the studios Microsoft owns actually release any games, because the track record is that 95% of studios Microsoft buys get closed down without releasing a single thing.
>>729631365In a way, yes.>Spend a fuckton of money on studio acquisition >Now your silly little console division has the big wigs looking at it>Now you must make a return>They come to realize that Xbox never made that much money for em>Start gutting everything and cutting funding and resources because they make more money just making and selling the games on more platforms.
>>729631491>In a way, yes.But also not at all, right?
BUT MICROSOFT HAS A BILLION DOLLARS WE CANNOT LOSE!reminder people still defending aquiring Minecraft for 2 billions instead of making actual divisions to develop new games. New games = less pressure on other studios and because their games weren't rushed = success. But secretly they wanted them all to fail so they could acquire them and their staff.

>>729631592Can't read, can ya? Xbox never made much money for Microsoft. Now that the heads of the company now realize this, they are basically getting defunded (running out of money) and exist only in name. Studios are shutting down, massive layoffs, every xbox game being found on something else. It's how SEGA's hardware division fucking died.
>>729631365Microsoft didn't, but Xbox did.Imagine you're one of the top execs at Microsoft, and then you get a letter from down at Xbox saying they need you to sign a nearly $70 BILLION contract deal to buy an entire publisher, after already spending a few billion buying another publisher. And after said deal pushing through, Xbox didn't even make back to break-even with that bill after a year, much less kick away Sony Playstation's market leader status.Actual KWAB moment
>>729627470I'm still surprised that there aren't more Xbox original games on Gamepass. Seems like a missed opportunity
>>729631695incorrect. Sony had weeb games before a mass push for localization in recent years.
>>729631724>It's how SEGA's hardware division fucking died. The entire company [Sega] literally ran out of money, Microsoft is changing the way Xbox operates and this makes it unappealing to customers by asking for too much of a return on their sales pricing them out of the market as they seek to launch on other platforms. The only similarity is Xbox hardware may not be a thing for much longer. It feels like you're just throwing around comparisons unaware that they're nothing alike.
>>729631698>"Bam!">Avatar's limbs instantly destroy themselves.Fucking kek.
>>729627470You can't point out Xbox's demise without admitting to the absolvte brvtal mogging that the PS5 did to them this generation.
>>729631941Xbox doesnt get unlimited money from Microsoft. So, yes. They ran out of money and made terrible decisions. If they just played it safe and didnt spend BILLIONS on Bethesda and other studios. I doubt Microsoft would give a shit about what they did. But when you ask for that kind of scratch, the CEO and his lackeys are gonna look at your division and wonder why the fuck it exists.
>>729632096>Phil Spencer demanded his boss spend nearly $90 billion to acquire Bethesda, Activision Blizzard, and a bunch of other random studios in order to beat Sony.>The Microsoft CEO demanded Xbox immediately start turning a profit to recoup the investment.>Xbox hardware was immediately killed off because it was too costly.Xbox is dead.
>>729632096None of the conditions line up. The hardware and software sales aren't there, Sega was forced to end their hardware model and move to game software exclusively, Microsoft pumped billions into capturing the market, failed to, and is changing to a service based platform. Microsoft isn't firing on all cylinders like Sega was, Microsoft isn't releasing ambitious titles like Sega was, Microsoft isn't selling hardware like Sega was at the time, the only comparison is boxes might disappear. It's not even surface level comparable. Sega didn't leave the hardware scene - they went out of business. They got bailed out by the former president. Had that not happened Sega would not exist today. Xbox isn't even going away, it's turning into some weird digital amoeba. Comparing the two just comes off as an attempt to sound profound. "this is just like when the planes hit the sega dreamcast..." it's really not.
>>729632586>Acquire all these studios>Release the games on other platforms anyway. >Spent 90 billion for no fucking reason. >>729632719>Xbox isnt going the way of SEGA! >By the way, It's going the way of SEGA!
>>729627470It was never good. Microsoft and the Xbox brand did A LOT of damage to the video game industry.
>>729632797>I can't read and I'm gonna let everyone know!Fascinating.
>w-well the Xbox isnt like a "box" anymore its its more of symbol uh a concept...Grim.
It sounds stupid but the naming had a lot to do with it. Just like how the Wii U partially flopped because a lot of parents thought it was like a Wii add-on and not an entire new console, the xbox names are retarded. Compared to a straightforward PS1 PS2 PS3 etc you have shit like xbox one and then series s or x, it confuses parents who are a large amount of sales for this shitit shouldn't work like that but markets work on how retarded your audience is
>>729633124No, the lack of games was the biggest problem. Wii U also failed for this reason, the games were shit.
>>729632915>Xbox is a division of microsoft with it's own budget>Spend 90 billion dollars, the division doesnt fucking have, on big western studios >Basically had to get a loan from the rest of Microsoft to do it>Microsoft Ceo and his friends now look into the Xbox division >Realize it's fucking broke and spent a lot of money for basically nothing, not to mention it has always been a bit of a money pit to begin with>Close it down in all but name>This is somehow, not at all like what happened to SEGA, aka, ran out of fucking money.
>>729627470Killed all their iconic studios and franchises for no reason. Then they bet everything on Kinect and the New Water-cooler.
>>729627470>Xbox 360 era, Microsoft nearly defeated SonyThey really didn't. Even Microsoft considers that generation a complete failure
>>729633124I don't know if I believe that about the Wii U. I loved the Wii U myself hours of fun only real niggas played Xenoblade Chronicles X etc. but that always sounded like "tendie cope".
>>729633156Wii sold a brajillion copies and all people played on it was wii sports or mario kartthe games have nothing to do with it when majority of casuals play 1-2 games forever
>>729633124The Series S and X were a terrible idea. With the series S being a weaker X, and Xbox forcing devs to make every game having to work for the weaker system so S owners wouldnt be left out. Sure, the system was cheaper, but it fucked over every dev who made a game for the systems.
TOTALXBOXDEATH
>>729633171>>>This is somehow, not at all like what happened to SEGA, aka, ran out of fucking money.Correct, Microsoft isn't running out of money. The Xbox division is also making billions despite some products underperforming. The strategy of making money on widespread software launches and services has made them more money post acquisition. The Spencer buyouts were done as a measure to continue growth down the line which it has succeeded in doing. Sega went out of business because they ran out of money. Satella Nutella expected this to pay off over time, which it is.
>>729627915
>>729631994>Perfect inCel
>>729633467Xbox isnt selling consoles, increased prices on the consoles they are not selling, and have yet to make a return on their investment. Xbox exists in name only at this point. No matter how much people try to spin it. All their "exclusives" are on anything that can run them and their consoles are collecting dust on shelves. They did go the way of sega. Microsoft is even trying their hardest to fucking get out of the console business because ITS BLEEDING MONEY.
>>729633665>Xbox isnt selling consolesYeah they keep raising prices, but Xbox has metastasized into something else entirely at this point. >>729633767You do know that Xbox is the name of the DIVISION at Microsoft, right? SEGA wasn't called Dreamcast when they made the Dreamcase. Dreamcast was a CONSOLE. So, of course they will keep the name Xbox because the division is called Xbox.
>>729628918The SPORTS from EA Sports got me.
>>729633882>You do know that Xbox is the name of the DIVISION at MicrosoftAnd that division is still in business doing what they've been doing for like 10 years now. You seem eager to compare this to how Sega left the hardware business but really it's really like how the microvision went under.
>>729633994Yeah, but the hardware portion is fucking dead just like SEGA's. They still make games, or, well, the studios they bought still do. The ones they bought to make exclusives for their system, that they threw onto other platforms anyway. The ones they spent all their money on.
>>729629282/thread
Phil Spencer must have epic blackmail to stay on>get company to spend billions upon billions only to make the games multiplatform anyways>implement gamepass so people wont even buy your shitty $70 games and will just cancel their subscription after they're done playing the game>outright tell people there's really no reason to get an xbox>our audience were dudebros? >>729630184They only lasted because Sony fucked up on the PS3 price, that's it. Gaming would have looked very different if Sony didn't sell the PS3 for $500-$600.
>>729627470Microsoft is incompetent; they can't even run a functioning service. I just tried buying Lost Odyssey on my Xbone and the Buy button didn't work so I had to switch to my PC and buy it from their website, but cache issues or some shit forced me to have to restart the browser to even view my cart
>>729630738Sega didn't want to quit, Microsoft did.
>>729634132Rumor has it he's staying on to keep Microsoft from fully killing their gaming division, but I don't believe that can really last. Microsoft Gaming is losing too much money.

>>729634207Yeah history would look a lot different if companies priced their shit differentLike look at the 3DO. It's not a bad console exactly but the price was 700 fucking dollarsin 1993like holy shit what the fuck is that

>>729634504Panasonic wanted the 3DO to be an everything machine and CDs were pretty new at the time. So, the tech inside was expensive. Not to mention, many consoles are sold at a loss, with the company expecting games to make up the difference. If you think consoles are expensive now. Wait until they decide to sell for profit, any xbox or sony system will easily be in the 1k range of they did.
>>729634627>expensive everything console flops>microsoft does it again with xbox onehistory is a cycle

>>729627470Hearing just the behinds the scenes shit that went on at Microsoft, you just have to imagine a bunch of people who have no clue about video games deciding to get into video games. The console got popular by accident and now the people who don't know about video games get called back to give more "brilliant" ideas for the follow-up.
>>729629008No, they paid for exclusive early DLC access, and guaranteed release on 360, It was never a 360 exclusive, Microsoft just handed Rockstar and Take Two loadsamoney for that. It was always slated for a PS3 release.
>>729636148Probably in a year or two, same way you can't run ghost of yotei on your PC not for another year or two.Just the way things are.
>>729636141That would've been the smart move and MS is realizing this 20 years too late. Now they're stuck with trying to keep this limp dicked brand alive.
Microsoft should have nerfed gamepass before it became a crutch. Put time limits on newer games. Make them trials. Remove them right before a big expansion release. Anything but letting people stack of 40 years of new releases and DLC for $5
>>729636313All of microsofts products are kinda shit, m365 only really makes so much sense for corporations because they all had to use active directory, email and the office suite already and then they rounded it out with the barely serviceable MSTeams, m365 is really only "good" because of their pre-existing position in the market. The don't tend to succeed where they don't already have a winning position.
>>729636604Microsoft turned down GTA3 exclusivity. PS2 would have been dead in the water.
>>729636141Yup, Sony was never a threat to them on PC, it was stupid to chase after them. All they did was peck the hornist's nest in Valve in 2012 causing them to become the competitor that would ultimately defeat Microsoft in gaming.
You can clearly see it's about games and they are all hopelessly creatively bankrupt and that's why nintendo exists it just bing bing yahoos to victory if even that, if it even feels like pumping out some mario shit for you and not some side shit. The problem is there are no games. That simple. What is a good game? idk
>>729627790Fable, Bully, Dust, halo
>>729636685Eh, that probably would have kneecapped Rockstar more than anything. The PS2 was gonna move units no matter what due to DVD player.
>>729636718This is why we need Nintendo and Valve, the only two companies to give Japan and America the swift kick in the ass we all need.
>>729636313That's exactly what happens when you have someone ignorant of what they're trying to sale at the helm of a huge corpo like Microsoft, the suits see the Xbox brand is in danger, they don't really give a shit they have stuff like Windows (lol) and all the other divisions under them, They buy Skype Skype shits itself, no biggie just fall back on AI or something. Meanwhile Nintendo is pressing the panic button on Wii U's failure because that's what they depend on.
>>729636904Valve doesn't make video games though.
>>729636718Yes, it is about the games. Microsoft had a fire under their ass with the OG, they actually sort of tried. That effort extended to the 360, but it also positioned itself to spotlight indies in a way that basically normalized their presence in the industry to pretty much where they are today. It wasn't until the Kinect that MS thought they could just coast. They were wrong, they never had it that good and now no one's willing to turn it all back on again for God knows whatever reason.
>>729632096Other anon is right, it's a different situation. SEGA dropped dead right as console growth exploded. They would have sold their souls to ride the Gen 6/7 wave. Microsoft is pulling back because they don't think there are new users to be gained. Only an existent base of console users which is worse because it's much more expensive to convert someone than sell a console to someone who doesn't have a console yet. Microsoft probably ran the math, realized they'd have to spend like 10 billion dollars for each 1% increase in market share and just tapped out. Why win the console war if you lose money doing it?
Gaming started going downhill when Microsoft entered the market

Steel Battalion
>>729637185The 3DO wasn't expensive because CDsThe 3DO was expensive because it was just a standard and the consoles were made by 3rd parties who had to make a profit from selling the consoles alone, so the prices were unusually high
>>729627470During the era when studios and publishers were desperately pushing for multiplats in order to cover their losses and the untenability of their business model, Microsoft streamlined porting with APIs like Xinput and GFWL, which resulted in an uptick in games, meanwhile Nintendo had its own games and Sony was ass to develop for.As soon as the industry dysentery of 7th gen died off, so too did the success of Xbox, especially once generic licensed engines made generic porting to all platforms trivial.
>>729637049They're making Half-Life X
>>729637351They went to Valve and told them they wanted to lock down Windows in 2012, turning it into an Xbox and making all launchers go through the Microsoft Store instead of being able to just download it and install it from the websites that have them with Windows 8. Valve laughed them out of the building and then begin work on SteamOS and gaming hardware which led to where we are now. Microsoft backed off that stance, but Valve still created an insurance policy because you can never trust Microsoft whose mind changes on a dime.
>>729634627>consoles are sold at a loss, with the company expecting games to make up the differenceDo you have any idea wtf you're talking about? Panasonic was a first manufacturer of "The 3DO Companies" 3DO system, as well as Sanyo and Goldstar. The system manufacturers didn't see profits from software sales, they made their money from this hardware they randomly licensed and sold, hence the high prices on systems, and disincentivised price drops

>>729637719While that's cool and all that people will continue to use Windows on desktops and laptops. No one will purchase Windows Xbox hardware whether they're Mini PCs for the living room or PC gaming handhelds. Valve has Microsoft beat when it comes to Steam hardware (Mini living room PC and gaming PC handheld). Steam also beats the Microsoft Store while Valve will take 30% of what Microsoft sells on Steam. Only thing Microsoft has going for them is people using Windows, that's it.
pc gaming is the goat
>>729637882Microsoft was also the only known publisher that made you pay for free-to-play games just to play them online. This was one of the main barriers that kept Xbox from getting a MMO Final Fantasy game for many years and they readded that back under Game Pass. Despite Sony and Nintendo introducing paid online, they don't do this, if a game has free online, it's free. Microsoft even tried to add an online paywall for gaming on Windows Vista. I hate Microsoft so much.

>>729627470Spencer said it himself. The Xbox One lost the most pivotal generation because everyone was building up digital libraries that locked them to their platforms. They were never able to claw it back like Nintendo did because Xbox consoles have always been the same as PlayStation consoles, Nintendo tries new things and so even after the Wii U where everyone thought they were a goner, the Switch was able to succeed as a hybrid device, because people bought games for the Switch to play handheld. They lost the Xbone generation because they didn't understand why people liked the 360. A lot of people bought 360s so they could watch Netflix but at the time smart TVs were coming in which had Netflix as an app, so all the people who bought 360s for that purpose didn't need one anymore. The people buying the Xbox wanted games, and the Xbox One had literally fucking nothing worth playing on it. I preordered an Xbox One at launch, the only games I can remember on it were Sunset Overdrive, Rise Son of Rome and fucking Call of Duty Ghosts. That lineup was so abysmal most stuck to their 360, and even I ended up rebuying a 360 so I could play with my friends.
console that appeals to normies was always doomed to fail.normies grow older and get children, no more videogames.meanwhile weeaboo has no kids, only plays videogames, still buys Sony, Nintendo, PC
>>729640219It's almost like Xbox and PlayStation are honestly better when they barely have any money.
>>729641017>The Xbox One lost the most pivotal generation because everyone was building up digital libraries that locked them to their platformsThis is bullshit given that everyone that had an Xbox One or PS4 just shifted to the Switch and PC. Hell, half of everyone that brought an Xbone didn't even bother with the Xbox Series consoles. Most of the Xbox Series S users were new and now Microsoft is pricing them out of the Xbox ecosystem especially next gen. I wouldn't even be surprised if some Xbox One guys just got a PS5 too.
>>729641017i know achievement hunter fags on 360 with hundreds of thousands of gamerscore that didn't buy an xbone lol
>>729641045>meanwhile weeaboo has no kids, only plays videogames, still buys Sony, Nintendo, PC>SonyThey're normie trash now, they'll be going the way of Xbox. At least when Sony goes fully third party, Sony of Japan will fully take over it, and they'll get rid of their western crap.
>>729627470Xbox was always shitXbox died because the toddlers who thought it was great are reaching 30 now and are starting to discover real video games
>>729627470xbox decided they ruined video games enough and cashed out.
>>729627470I'm laughing. The OP is right, and I'm laughing...30% of market share is still pretty big, but it's clear Sony has BTFO all competitors. I mean Nintendo lost as a serious contender in the early 2000s so Sony only really had one since 2005.Now here's a more depressing fact: in terms of game revenue, mobile games controls over 50% of the global market share. Browser, console, and PC games are barely matching sales from mobile.
>>729641335>I mean Nintendo lost as a serious contender in the early 2000sBut then they show up in their own lane and occasionally clean house like with Wii and Switch. Sony knows better than to completely discount them, but they undeniably aren't competing for the same turf anymore.
they killed their own mascot
Xbox screwed the pooch big time with how fucking shit the Xbone Reveal was and never mind that the fact that they destroyed the few exclusives that the Xbox had. Also nobody wants to pay for online or if they will they may as well just pay Sony for it because at least the PS5 has a decent amount of games as well as being the console where most of the multiplats go to.Or better yet just go to Switch and PC
>>729641419I still don't know what that plant thing in Halo was about
>>729627790phantom crash
>>729641269Xbox literally saved maturing Nintendo fans from toddlerization, we didn't have to switch to rival Sony when the Wii came out and trolled everyone.
>>729641335The problem here is Nintendo dropped out because they knew where home console gaming was headed and just stopped bothering with it, Sony's market is no longer growing with PlayStation, they can't compete with Nintendo in handheld and they're going to find that out the hard way when Canis comes, Valve won the PC gaming market and making it hard to own a PlayStation because Steam has the same games, PC is open, there are a lot of options, and now there's Steam hardware. Microsoft is screwed from all sides, they're leaving the console market after getting slapped down by Sony and returning home to PC only to realized that Valve took their home from right under them and will be undercutting them in hardware prices in terms of PC gaming. All Microsoft has now is Windows and they keep losing more market share on that. No one will ever use the Xbox app or Xbox full screen experience; and the Xbox hardware is dead, doesn't matter if the next Xbox hardware are Windows PCs, Xbox is a dead brand. Steam, SteamOS, and Steam hardware won, there is nothing Microsoft can do about it. Lessons to learn from this story is that Sony should have never left the handheld market, Microsoft shouldn't have left the PC market high and dry to die.
>>729627470They were strangely arrogant. The 360 was doing very well against the PS3 but it wasn't as much of a stomp as it was made out to be and Xbox was only ever super popular in the US and UK. Even by the end of that console generation the PS3 had caught up in sales. Then Microsoft decided to do a press conference that was so bizarrely anti-consumer that you'd think they had a complete monopoly when it was actually very close. I don't think I've ever seen a bigger corporate "fuck you" from a corporation, just dedicating the whole show to talking about restricting features and watching tv and sports. Even my normie friends who know nothing about that conference felt the effects as cross-play didn't exist and no one wanted to be stuck unable to play with their friends after the 360 era, so everyone just bought PS4's.
>>729627470The xbox brand's downfall always felt like more of a suicide than a murder to me. They fumbled the launch of the xbone and instead of doubling down on correcting their mistake and competing with the PS4 they proceeded to kneecap themselves, throw away all their exclusives, and do everything in their power to make sure the average consumer wanted anything other than the console they were offering. Tack on the fact that Phil Spencer has admitted that xbox is essentially a failed brand at this point and there's even less reason for anyone to own one.
>>729627470xbox was always shit and don't became shit the moment they started competing for MS's space
>>729627470Should I get a Series S bros? I want to play fightan
>>729641683>they knew where home console gaming was headed and just stopped bothering with itSo thats why they made a console that I can play on my TV or on a 737-800 going to Chicago?
Mainly just price. Whenever Xbox and PlayStation are priced about the same then PlayStation will absorb Xbox's sales. After PS2 they're basically the same box with weaker software support on Xbox. Xbox pricing above PS4 was disastrous and should have been understood from a business standpoint (looking at market share over time compared to unit price over time for the previous decade). Series S took some sales early on because of price but then those users had the ecosystem they were promised pulled out from under them.
>>729641691The worst thing you can ever do as a company is show your hands with your mask fully off. They did this to both console and PC gamers and lost both. Microsoft even lost their Windows Phone fans. Microsoft can never have fans because every time they have any kind of success, they fuck it up by spitting on the face of the consumers they hate. Microsoft has run out of good will with everyone.
>>729627470It was also the worst console. Introduced autoaim in console shooters, ruining crossplay with PC and becoming meta in most shooters, while refusing to use gyro which is superior then killed off not only it's own franchises like Halo and GOW but every studio MS bought. What a trash console series
>>729641197>This is bullshit given that everyone that had an Xbox One or PS4 just shifted to the Switch and PC.A lot of people who had an Xbox One or PS4 are still using an Xbox One and PS4. That's why ports still get made for them (but especially the PS4). The Switch was a unique case because it was a companion console, 40% or so of Switch owners also had an XB1/PS4, and they wouldn't go on to buy the XSX/PS5. The draw to buying Switch games was that they were able to be played on a handheld. The people who actually upgraded to next gen consoles did so because of their existing BC libraries, 84% or so of Switch 2 owners upgraded from Switch 1. So yeah, digital libraries matter quite a lot. People bought the XB1/PS4 and a Switch, then skipped the PS5/XSX for Switch 2 when they realized there was nothing worth playing on those consoles that they couldn't already play on a PS4/XB1. PC userbase isn't stealing users from consoles, it's simply growing due to emerging markets in Asia (simply look at how popular Wukong was on Steam). Nintendo is the one winning the console war, PC and Steam are simply just expanding.

>>729641937>A lot of people who had an Xbox One or PS4 are still using an Xbox One and PS4.Doesn't this demonstrate that Xbox is right to go all-in on streaming? It's clear people can't be arsed to buy new systems so gaming is likely to go the way of Roku.

>>729641683Thanks for the thoughtful comment
>>729628021It worked very well with normies
>>729628021They didn't, they intentionally killed the Xbox. Satya Nadella never had any plans to keep Xbox alive, he slowly started killing it in 2016. This was always the end result. The Xbox app on PC was the death of Xbox. It was a set-up to make it the Windows side of gaming while diluting the console itself. When the tech was finally there to make a console PC hybrid whether it was a living room Mini PC or a portable handheld device, Microsoft was always going to kill the console specifically to push just that. This is all going as Microsoft planned it to go. Microsoft was never serious about keeping Xbox alive after Don Mattrick left.
