And without knowing the kanji there is no way to distinguish similarly looking words. I would say you can start without kanji, but once you reach 1-2k words you will need them. But then why not just learn them from the start? I did the same mistake where I dropped learning individual kanji (wanikani level 20) and after 1.5 years my word mining deck has 1k+ words with 95-100% difficulty which means there is a 95-100% chance that I will forget the word within the next couple of days. Unless you have a good memory.

I started learning Japanese and stuck with it for a year. Then as a lark I played the first bit of tsukihime when it suddenly hit me. Oh. All these supposed great Japanese games are gonna be shit garbage like this huh. I stopped learning Japanese.
