When does this get funny?
I'm a millennial but I never cared for AVGN but I had nothing to do this year so I checked out a lot of the seasons.
>what does BK stand for? Burger king?
>P bags? what does that stand for? piss bags?
>I'd rather have [animal] [verb] on a [another animal] shit than play this x100
it's the most painfully obvious script and that's supposed to be his strong suit? how did people find this funny
>>
Friendly reminder that some of the worst jokes like the aforementioned piss bags were written by Mike

You had to be there... we were less jaded as a people back then. You also have to remember that he was one of the first to do this style of content on YouTube.
>>
>>729637309
It doesn't. If you read through the comments on his videos, most people use it as background/white noise to sleep.
If it were funny, people wouldn't be put to sleep.
>>
>>729637456
So it's just legacy standing? I'm really struggling to find the funny otherwise because I basically predict 90% of what he's gonna say in a script
>>
>>729637753
I geuninely enjoy James Rolfe and Mike Matei. I find their brand of humor funny and it reminds me of a simpler time. Probably it's just not for you and that's okay. Also this thread isn't vidya and will almost certainly be removed.

You have shit taste
t. 2005 Zoomer that grew up watching AVGN
>>
>>729637309
It had stupid humor but made up for it with being amusing content bout video games. You have to realize this was 2007-2010. If you continued to watch anything past 2011-12 then I feel bad for you. I reckon those are the autists who are still obsessing over him or trying to make him into a lolcow when all his relevancy has gone out the window a long time ago.
>>

It was stupid even for the time, but a lot of viewers were kids growing up with the internet.
When a joke falls flat, it really fucking falls flat. I'll always remember this stupid segment with zero setup.
>>
>>729638197
Amusing content I get. The ones were he reviews actual niche stuff or hardware like pong consoles or the game boy accessories are fairly interesting. Even the tiger games one was cool to me because I actually owned one of those pieces of shit and it's just as trash as he makes it out to be
but I just haven't actually laughed at all, maybe a chuckle or whatever
>>
>>729637309
It's always been painfully unfunny trash
>You had to be there
Only the weird autistic kid in the corner watched this kind of shit, it never had any appeal to normal people even at its peak popularity
>>
>>729638535
I don't know what to say anon. I don't really laugh when I watch something by myself. I will crack a smile but just bursting out with laughter is asking a bit too much.
>>729638610
Probably true. I knew a couple of guys that watched it back in high school and they were certainly not the most popular kids. But then I see shit like these new twitch streamers and then think the same thing yet it's somehow mainstream now.
>>
>>729638535
Really? You didn't laugh at the Tiger episode? That's probably his funniest.
>>
>>729637309
It's funny if you have no friends and need an internet man to live through.
>>
>>729637309
He was the first. A real pioneer. By today's standards his stuff is very fucking tame. Back in the day it was one of a kind. I remember when I was 12 I LITERALLY pissed my pants from laughter watching the texas chainsaw video.

You had to be there.
>>
>>729637309
It's not going to make you piss and shit your pants, it's just entertaining to watch a guy doing an over the top act about a game being bullshit. It's almost vindication for every time you've played some fuck load of shit and you've had noone to go' this is a fuck load of shit!!!!! Asssss!!!!!!!!' to about it
>>
>>729639217
>nobody said shit piss fuck before this man
Nonsense.
>>
>>729637309
I get the humor. The stuff I dont understand the appeal of, is whatever that Scott the Spaz kid is doing, and similar chodes with no bite to them.
>>
>>729637309
Never. He's a retard making retarded content for other retards. He's also a Nintendo fan and self admitted retard.
>>
you just had to be there (read: retarded)
>>
>>729639450
That guy still doesn't know audio recording
Lot of the skits they do have audio peaks and echoes
>>
>>729637753
If you can predict what he will do and say then that should prove his legacy to you.
>>
>>729637309
fuck off
>>
>>729637309
I never found him funny, the only content I enjoy from him is when he is being serious and talking about something he enjoys, like the SNES and SEGA comparison video.

Otherwise its very hard to watch.
>>
Go watch "Live Like a Windrammer" and that is all you need to know about him

He's sort of like Seinfeld, the more you watch and understand the funnier it becomes. For me, I always preferred his videos on histories of consoles or companies or even his stories about his past.

The whole "THIS GAME SUCKS MY SPIDERBALLS WHAT WERE THEY THINKING FRED FUCHS FRED FUCHS ASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS" can be juvenile and stupid but the more I watched it the more it just started to become funny.

So stay for the well researched game he's talking about and sooner or later you'll be enjoying him for more than that. NES Accessories and Nintendo Power are pretty great videos and his Castlevania 4 parter back in the day was kino.
>>
>>729643484
The Fred Fucks thing is specifically a running gag that's only really funny if you've followed its usage through multiple videos.
>>
>>729643681
that fred fucks thing with gilbert gottfried was one of the worst things I have ever seen
gilbert was never funny and james has no chemistry with anybody. fred fucks is sorta okay as a punchline but using a celebrity as the character which had nothing to do with the game was awful
>>
IMO his last funny episode was Plumbers Don't Wear Ties, not sure how long ago that was but I can say that he still had most of his hair.
His early stuff was really good, also the 'Nerd with an attitude' is what sold it.
For me the best part about it was the history behind the games he's covering.
>>
>>729643934
How much did he had to pay for Gilbert and Caulkin?
>>
>>729637309
You have to understand that the AVGN was created in a world where constant profanity and vulgar jokes weren't so ubiquitously accessible. Short form comedy that fit into that niche just didn't exist at all. You could go to Newgrounds and get your fill of animation that pushed the boundaries of decency, but there really wasn't much amateur video that carried the same energy. James Rolfe and Mike Matei laid the groundwork themselves.

The whole premise was that there was a time when you'd just buy (more commonly, rent) video games based on the advertisements or the box art, and you had absolutely no idea what you were in for. More often than not, you'd end up with a mediocre game, sometimes it would be a real fuckin' stinker you'd regret paying money for.

And your only recourse, especially if you had rented it and were stuck with it for the week, was to try and extract some entertainment out of it by laughing at all the stupid and confusing shit in it, whether it was relevant or not.

The AVGN is just that experience distilled and exaggerated. Then they started adding sketches and Halloween costumes into the mix because James Rolfe has always been much more of a B-Movie guy than a gamer.

So in short. It was funny because of how audacious it was in a world where profanity and vulgarity were a lot less common. There was inherent humor in the low budget aspect of it all. And it spoke to an experience most of the people watching knew all too well. So it was, in a sense, cathartic.

And James Rolfe did have a knack for delivering his lines in just the right way. The Nerd would go through a progression from calm and informative, to annoyed, to confused, to upset, to outright angry, until he finally snaps. James's delivery of the lines tended to be funny in and of itself.

One of the biggest reasons that the newer stuff doesn't work as well is that the escalation is just gone. He jumps around from stage to stage at random to suit the line.

Not only that but the "angry" aspect is just forced.

FRED FUCHS?!
