How can in-game romances evolve from the current '3-4 conversations and one sex scene before the final mission' format they are currently stuck in /v/?

I thought you niggers were memeing on me but IRL after I'd mention playing something the first thing I'd get asked is whom I romanced. Not which quest or weapon I liked but that shit. Why? It's such a small part of almost every game it's in, it's just some cringe dialogue and a sex scene and then everything goes back to the way it was or you never see the character again.
The Baldur's Gate 1+2 era of gamers didn't give a fuck about romances in their RPG. BG2's romances were a late additions (which is also why they're prone to bugging out, Jaheria's especially went untested)
romances in wrpgs are doomed from the combination of having to make everything politically correct and having to fit blank slate characters with dialogue menus for every conversation. they will literally never be good as long as they are developed with those two constraints.
Cyberpunk made improvements, the romantic texts with racy pictures, the dates, etc. Definitely not perfect but getting closer than others have.
