I'd actually consider Kirby more of an action platormer than a pure platformer because of this.Metroidvanias are usually action platformers but their structure is fundamentally changed. Instead of just a serious of linear stages/levels it's usually one big world with progress locked behind movement/attack upgrades. Like double jumps, or dashes, or specific attack types. You explore as far as you can, unlock a new ability, then use that ability to explore other areas, and repeat.There are definitely overlaps between them though.
