So has everyone warmed up to this gem yet? I'm surprised it took so long, the game is generally quite good.

On the contrary, as most of the shills have given up it's clear how the prevailing opinion is middling to negative. Nintendo themselves admitted certain parts of the game were bad but they simply didn't have time to do anything better.

I've done the opposite. I went in wanting to like it and even enjoyed some of the early segments despite being very flawed, but the game just got worse and worse the longer I played it.
>>
>>729658340
It was good all the way to the ice lab... no complaints. I liked Volt Forge and even the motorcycle - I thought the cycle was fun :S

Then in the fire area when the female NPC starts talking I began to get annoyed. The Mines area was the absolute low point and should have been completely scrapped. It was awful dogshit. The NPCs didn't work right either, like the A.I. was bugging out.

The fight against the big lava monster was cool on the Vi-O-La. Meh... The game had a good setup but it's like it's unfinished.

I enjoyed the last Sylux fight, though the flying through hyperspace segment was a little weird, but in a campy way I think it fits and is cool.

Prime 5 will probably fix most of the problems. I'm sure they'll release 5 just to do it right. They know they could have done better and just released an uninished product, which is odd for Nintendo

Prime 4 defenders have a warped reality where they believe Retro isn't responsible for how garbage the game turned out to be. They think it's all on Bandai Namco, despite the fact that Retro took over the project 5 fucking years ago.

Sorry bud. Game's got MASSIVE flaws.
>>
>>729656119
Frankly, the game is better than any right it has to be after going through development hell. Even without the context of the recent Tanabe interview, as soon as the trailer with the Vi-O-La and Sol Valley came out, I knew that the shitcanning of Bamco Singpore and rebooting the game with Retro was a result of Nintendo trying to ape BotW with a Metroid game - the announcement being in 2017 was just too coincidental.

I would call Prime 4 just barely "good", but it's certainly not great, and is definitely disappointing. It bases itself on all the worst parts of Prime 3 and has too many half-baked concepts that are underutilized or poorly executed, not to mention Myles constantly harassing you over the radio like Navi in OoT. And yet the presentation and core gameplay is engaging enough that I was able to play through it without getting too bored (albeit extremely annoyed with most of the GF troopers, except the android).

I consider this game like a splinter that needed to be pulled, it's unpleasant but necessary. Understanding why the game turned out the way it did does make me optimistic for a Prime 5. Just for the love of god, Tanabe - I know you love the GF, but if you want them in a game so bad just make another Federation Force spinoff instead of trying to shoehorn them into everything.
>>

What's funny is games like Halo 3 or Reach or 5 or Infinite get glowing reviews, but there's no actual gameplay. The whole gameplay of Halo is just a shooting gallery. Why would you ever replay that? The story in Halo after Halo:CE is also a bunch of hokey nonsense. There is nothing in the story of Halo that is memorable. It's just a bunch of writing slop

My sentiments exactly. The worst aspects of Prime 4 are literally where it's trying too hard to tow the lines with the first game. It plays it too safe and doesn't take nearly enough risks.
>>
>>729662728
They can build on this for the sequel.

>>729661761
Did you miss the part where I said the interview is only confirming things I already believed about the game? Do you think it's just a coincidence that the original Prime 4 nothingburger announcement was just months after BotW was released to critical acclaim? It's clear as day it was greenlit as a BotW derivative, a direction that is fundamentally at odds with everything that people enjoy about Metroid as a series.
>>
>>729662892
I felt like I was playing Half Life 2 for most of the game. That was the vibe I got. I liked Prime 4. Dark Souls was filled with jank yet everybody says it's the best game ever. I also like Dark Souls with all the jank, and I like Prime 4 for all the issues. Same vibe. Jank or inconsistencies add character.
>>
Weirdest thing is that they could have been quite conservative with a retread of prime 1 structure, but innovating on many game-feel aspects.

For example, after mirror's edge, it should be clear that you can have an agile main character in a 1st person game, and one of MP's least flattering aspects is how tanky samus feels compared to the 2D games.

Another aspect they could have massively improved upon is how weapons affect the enemies. It's quite jarring to have them flash in red after each hit instead of getting scarred by the plasma gun. Im not saying it should be doom degrees of gore, but weapons should feel impactful and satisfying, and it should be okay to portray this in a game about murdering aliens, even if nintendo is not partial about explicit violence. Its one of the most disappointing aspects of the game and one that makes it feel a lot more dated than it should.

Theres probably many other things. But its so odd they saw these things and didnt think they should try and do better.
>>
>>729662651
I accept your concession you absolute faggot
>>
>>729656325
I think 5 will be better if only because it wouldn't be developed during the "open world" meme that has plague games since the 10s
>>
>>729662892
Like in Link's Awakening Remake for the Switch, you have that little fishing mini game and you get a bottle and a heart piece. Or the crane game. In MP4 you have the motorcycle tests. When those happened I felt the same feeling I felt in Link's Awakening. But ultimately that was unfinished. It could have been an entirely multiplayer Metroid racing game, or there could have been more segments with fighting on the bike. These little asides provide the same feeling Half Life 2 provided with the vehicle sections
>>
>>729663192
Open world needs to be done right, and in a Metroid game you need to get upgrades to open up new areas. Link's Awakening does the same thing

Bro. Just saying. I didn't play Metroid Dread and I didn't buy Metroid Prime Remastered. Releasing this game probably caused more sales for other Metroid titles. Nintendo will release another Metroid game, and Prime 5 is highly likely, and Retro will be able to reuse assets to make the game better. Keep the faith, friend
>>
>>729663117
I've always felt that Doom 2016 is the direction they should take Prime games. Have Samus be very mobile, able to dart around, chain together lock ons and attacks, able to walljump again, multiple jumps from space jump boots, and bringing back the screw attack for a late game reward fitting up feeling invincible and cleaning up all the collectibles. There's nothing wrong with experimenting with pacing, it's fine to go from cautious exploration straight to controlling an arena of enemies.
>>
>>729660690
This might be the first time I've seen minimal backtracking counted as a negative.

Metroid is the most befitting of an open world game. It can be done, and it should be done. A half measure hubworld was the wrong choice.

Metroid 1 is absolutely open, it can be beaten in 30 minutes with just the ice beam hidden at the start. Ridley, Kraid, Wave beam, Screw attack, so much is optional and you need not concern yourself with it. A new Metroid game could hearken back to its roots and try some fresh things too.
>>
>>729665334
They can do a lot of cool stuff if they lean into him being evil Samus. For example him becoming more powerful between boss fights could be explained by him also finding upgrades.
>>

Hes a far better samus mirror that dark samus or SA-X because hes not actually a space monster under the suit. Hes another human. And his suit isn't a copy of samus', its its own design.

I dont know about the arenas, but building up samus from being clunky like in the prime games into the crazy movement options in games like that would be fitting for the series. Also the combat being more visceral would reminsce of how you become a murder machine by the end game.

I just dont understand retro. There's a lot of low hanging fruit and ideas to realize after all these years.
>>
>>729666860
NTA but no it isn't, it's about getting the key in Key Dungeon, using it for every room in that dungeon (and the boss), then only ever using it again in an obligatory Key Room in the final dungeon.

And after you finish Key Dungeon, the voice in your head says "The giant boulder blocking New Key Dungeon just opened, let's go to this new place you've never been to get New Key in New Key Dungeon"

I really really tried to like it but it just has too many problems to ignore. The empty open world is a bad design choice and if they made a way to turn off Miles I could probably get through it. >>
>>729658587
I liked how Armstrong fangirled over Samus, it's probably how Angseth would have reacted if she weren't already killed in MP2.
And having Duke there made sense to keep her on a leash since Armstrong would have forced herself onto Samus if no one else was there to stop her.
Plus Duke was actually useful as a combat NPC.

Either way I'll agree that the fake out deaths in the mines was pointless. Maybe the intention was to force Armstrong to grow up since she always had Duke to think for her?

Thats another reason he's fun
He's not leading a faction. He's one guy. The only reason he even has space pirates working for him in the intro of 4 is because he took control of them with his mutant metroids
Thats why a game just needs to have him and samus and maybe a 3rd faction thats hostile to both like the ing in prime 2.
>>
>>729656119
The game is better on the replay when you aren't scanning as much and treat it as a standard fps game with light metroid design elements (i.e. pathing to certain rooms / locations for known upgrades). Hard mode's enemies are surprisingly less tanky than I would expect for the series (which is a positive), but maybe that's a reaction the game's enemies being tanky, overall? I don't know. Beyond doesn't do anything well enough for a fps or Metroid game that warrants your attention over something else. A score in the 70s is valid.
>>729656325
I think you're right, and if not, the criticism and backlash from 4 will at least influence Prime 6 if we get one.
>>
>>729669492
>because he took control of them with his mutant metroids
Which may very well be revealed to be created / controlled with Sylux's psychic powers. I think there's credit to Sylux being another "chosen one" (found powers prior to the big teleport), and if he has a direct psychic link to the metroids, the convenient placement of them (each boss) make a lot more sense.

343 trying to set the game's timeline past super makes it seem that Sylux stalked Samus for YEARS with no productive result until she nuked Zebes, THEN decided to attack her with like 4 metroids and a dream, T H E N imediattely jobbed and caused a catastrophic event.
THEN he did NOTHING while chilling on a recovery pod. THENNNNN acquires super psychic powers and nanomachine powers to finally confront SAMUS
for like 3 minutes, then she leaves and he's stuck with the feds on a world full of feral vagina aliens and stupid green crystals.
I'm pretty sure his "planning" consisted of
>get stromg

bro how the fuck is chicken napoleon storm eagle "complex"? he impersonated a robot once? has a modicum of competence in a setting where a huge dumb screaming dragon is the commander of a terrorist PMC spanning the whole galaxy?

5 is never happening. Retro Studios probably isn't even going to exist in 6 months.

Super Metroid relied on opening up shortcuts, that whole notion of recontextualing an area is a result of how new areas opened into old areas that opened into new areas again. No other Metroid games DOES THAT, and it's SHIT. When someone says backtracking, they mean the kind of shit Metroid Prime does, where you retrace the same fucking hallways, no changes, nothing, just to get to the one place where you can continue forward. Backtracking does not belong ins a GOOD Metroid game.

Retro Studios isn't going anywhere. They're probably just going to be in remaster and support hell for a while.

well he literally quoted mother brain's schizo rant about "bringing order to the galaxy", and Samus seems very good at being a cosmic pitbull that eats eldritch horrors and chaotic forces.
