It actually wasn't even that good, though. The side missions were repetitive, vital information was hidden deep inside sub-menus, the open world was just a bit of a slog without much to do in it, and climbing and combat weren't as refined yet as in later titles.

But the "climb anything" thing blew everyone's minds, the mystery plot hooked people, and the well-realised medieval world, sharp art direction, and hints at greater depth made people willing to forgive a lot. Funny, what actually makes a game "good".

No, the controversial thing, at the time, was portraying a historical Islamic sect and (to a lesser extent) a historical Christian order as atheists who are aware that religion is a lie used to manipulate people. This was what they were cautious about. But they didn't have to worry about their actual audience because gamers at the time were known to be reasonable about things, look down on moral outrage, and were generally irreligious anyway.
Now that's something that has changed quite a bit, for some reason.

Did you know that the side missions aren't just repetitive busywork, but the documents you steal and the information you extract actually have actionable information about patrols and infiltration spots? All of which is hidden somewhere in a menu and quite unusable because you can't progress time or even set custom markers iirc

2 is superior on just about wvery level but after that the franchise lost what made it soul, still never played black flag which is supposedly great but I play these games to navigate ancient cities like a time travel vacation

weirdly enough, this is actually my favorite modern day sections in any AC game. i like how grounded they feel and the dialogue feels interesting. plus the whole thing with trying to link tidbits of information Desmond manages to find out through the conversation and the emails makes for genuinely interesting world building imo. Why did they never invest in the present day stuff after AC3, again?
