The story is boring as fuck, it has a weird ass battlesystem, story feels like the devs had no idea what the fuck they want it to be, characters are all bland as fuck and overall its a mess. At least the judges had kino designs. And if you like the gameplay you will tolerate the rest. Its unique for sure and endgame content is pretty good.

Viewing the world and the story from the perspective of such a young man allows the player to slowly sink into the setting in a proper non-overwhelming way. The majority of the players in Japan are teenagers, so they needed a protagonist whom they could relate to. Making the MC an older man, like Balthier or Basch woudn't work.

how do you figure out which of these characters is going to be liked during development?

It makes sense why he cares so much for him especially since he thinks he's the reason why he's dead in the first place. Clive had some pretty decent writing but his arc kind of falls apart after Joshua comes back alive without any real high point behind it.
is PS2 also the best version of FFX-2? I know about the butchered visuals for the X remaster but it's surprisingly hard to find good comparisons for X-2.
