The incredibly touching prologue gives great motivation towards the protagonists' quest and the mystery of the old man on the beach urges the player to keep playing. Then, after the team gets built, you meet the gestral village, Esquie, and Francois, which also provide a beauty and levity to the world that give the characters a reason to fight for their doomed world. Is all of this not what makes a plot good? That which convinces the player to keep playing?
