90s CAPCOM such a great studio

The D&D beat 'em ups in particular are some of the greatest games ever made. It's crazy how good those games are, probably because they insisted on having extra buttons for using items and shit in the arcade era when having that many buttons wasn't normal.

He got filtered by arguably the most fair genre in arcades.
>Multiple lives right off the bat
>Full life recharges between every stage
>Desperation moves so you don't get fucked by the AI
>Plenty of life recharges throughout the stages
>Usually there's weapons on the ground for additional damage.
You got a lot of playtime per credit by picking a beat em up in the arcades.

Unrelated but this artist just decided to release some game sprites inspired by this game

Not only that you die in a beat em up you respawn instantly, not some checkpoint where you refight the boss with no powerups and get skullfucked out of your remaining lives.
Beat em ups being considered quarter muncher is the absolute most brain dead ass fucking take ever.

Capcom from the late 80s to the late 00s (from GnG/Final Fight/MM2 to DMC4/DR1/RE5, roughly) was an incredible company, just classic after classic (plus some forgotten games that are just as excellent) in several genres, ESPECIALLY beat-em-ups. I don't think any one company has a better lineup in the genre than Capcom by both quality and quantity, it's insane. Shadow Over Mystara alone is beyond what most of the genre has to offer to this day, including games directly pulling from it like Dragon's Crown & Absolum.

I still think the RE Engine era has an edge on the Outsourcing era of the late 00s into the early 10s despite the latter having some great games too, but its biggest issue is that the company doesn't take even 10% as many risks as it used to and to be honest the risks they do take all seem to fail anyway which reinforces that (GnG Resurrection came and went despite being a great entry in the series, Kunitsu-Gami is their best game in over a decade and it didn't make waves at all).
>>
>>729696782
toaplan is the real mamba jamba with konami and data east too.

most game companies at that time where great and the golden age of videogames just didn't had capcom greats but everything in between too.

It wasn't just a golden period for a company but the entire medium, and that shouldn't be forgotten.
>>
>>729696782
>>729697084
so capcom was as great as everything else really tho.
>>
What do you guys think about the IGS PGM beat em ups?
>>
>>729694836
>>729695272
If I remember correctly, TSR sent someone to sit with the capcom dev team to play a game of DND. They wanted to make sure a lot of the small details made it through like needing fire to kill trolls. Genuinely a better time for gaming of all kinds.

It was beating 90s Konami and 90s Nintendo in platformers, and still fighting a good fight against 90s Square in RPGs. Gameplay was consistently perfect, the art direction that came with SF Alpha was incredible, the soundtracks were amazing, the games were fun.
Me and my friends get excited to this day when we boot up a game and this appears:

>KINO Nishimura was the GOAT.
She still is, just doesn't do as much. Her art was just as emblematic of Capcom as Akiman's and Bengus's were. They still have great artists there like Ikeno, Terio & my man Shinkiro but the loss of Nishimura & Akiman (and the deterioration of Bengus) is a real blow.
>>
>>729700058
>>729700778
Nishimura is half the reason I played Code of Princess (the other half being ACE on the OST) and wow that game absolutely sucked ass but every single character design is a winner.
>>
>>729700920
Same feeling I had playing Dragon Marked for Death because of Nakayama... such a meh game.
>>729700778
I can't get into Capcom's art styles anymore, SFVI looks like a bootleg 2nd rate neogeo fightan, RE is cinematic slop, maybe I should try monster hunter but it looks tiresome.

I actually don't mind SF6's aesthetics but I get you. GnG Resurrection, Kunitsugami, MH Stories 2&3, and Mega Man DO all have some nice artstyles at least. Pragmata's got some decent designs but it is mostly RE-style realism. Exoprimal's suits and dinos were all pretty cool.
>>
Looking forward to Pragmata.

>>729694836
I don't understand how you're supposed to have fun with beat 'em ups.

I really wanted to like shooters, just so I could play this. It looks like unadultered fun, until I realize it's a shooter.

Is, ironically, a squishy wizard.
>>
>>729694836
These scrolling beat-em-ups had such snappy and tactile gameplay.

Everyone else just didn't seem to have that.

Those Three Kingdom games seemed janky and not the same. The SNK attempts weren't as good either.
>>
>>729701912
Some classes were straight melee with no shooting at all. I mained Roadblock who was just a big wide shield that he could sometimes use as a weapon and his ult was just a Zangief lariat that made a tornado which ragdolled all small dinos. Very fun, shame it came and went like it did.
>>
>>729702198
I remember maining Terminus on Paladins just because third person camera mode turned it into a hack'n'slash... first shooter I enjoyed playing with my friends for any reason besides socializing.
>>
>>729702072
I can only imagine how much better they must've felt in the arcade with its inherent low input delay and CRTs.

this has to be bait
spamming continue gets you to the end at least while in checkpoint games like gradius you could waste 200$ worth of coins and still not see credit rolls if you are shit at the game, which many childrens are
>>
>>729703747
Relatable. I like being able to just pick up a game and play it through for 30-60 minutes and not having to commit to a 50-hour experience where a third of that time is spent watching cutscenes or interacting with menus or whatever else.

>>729704648
Gem Fighter coming with the Rival Schools demo was such a treat. Their JJBA is probably still the best game based on that franchise, and that story mode made it look like devs were having fun, I particularly like that one-off shmup minigame for the Lovers, it was fun to control both Hierophant and Chariot.

I liked puzzle fighter. too bad the game was flawed
>defending incurs a huge penalty, which encourages turtling and relying on counter gems (see below)
>gay counter gem comeback mechanic. just bury some crash gems and dump 5 pairs of gems anywhere to run the counter down. boom, free 30+ gem comeback
>some characters were downright trash (ryu, chun li, and felicia sucked the most by a long shot as they gave opponents free comebacks)
>game starves you of 1 color between diamonds. good luck guessing which
>diamond forced down your throat forces you to pop one color. say goodbye to your 6+ chain
then they added Y mode (basically, a columns clone), which rewarded people for not playing the game and spamming free combos from counter gems (it's a tad hard for an intermediate player to bury opponents in 1 combo without counter gem cheese. counters came out nearly instantly too thanks to hard drop)
finally, there was Z mode, which was good in theory, but the controls were seriously fucked (when dealing with power gems, you often didn't know which button swaps gems horizontally and which one vertically. it depended on the side the gems to swap were on (left/right, up/down), leading to wasted crash gems and unwated power gems due to inconsistent rotation behavior)
>>

Project Justice is a Top 5 Capcom game to me. Love that game to death. I'd pay a non-consumer-friendly pricetag for a full translation of the extra console modes that we didn't get over here.
>>
>>729707326
too bad rival schools is basically infinite central. one mistake and you lose a round

The only thing I hated about DnD is if you were playing Multiplayer and everyone else picks Magic User or Cleric
>Me, the chad Fighter of the group
>Ready for any fight
>Get into literally any encounter
>Swing my sword
>MAGIC MISSLE
>HOLD PERSON
>FIREBALL
>CONTINUAL LIGHT
>Swing about to connect
>MAGIC MISSILE
>STICK TO SNAKES
>ICE STORM
>CURE SERIOUS WOUNDS
>Enemy dead before it connects
>Repeat the process
