The Kinect could have been pretty cool. Sad it was riddled with just a bunch of dance games and nobody really wanted to develop games for it.
potential man could have totally soloed the villain he just didn't get his chance to shine
>>729697230it's your physical silhoette as input, dance games are the only thing it can do
Funny thing is a new a kinect console released this year and outsold Xbox Series consolesIts funny the kinect killed Microsoft early in the generation which they never recovered from. Then another company releases something like kinect and found more success with it than what Microsoft did
>>729697230The dance games are the only ones that tried to make it a good peripheral, everything else is complete shovelware garbage that just make you wave your hands to control a cursor.
>>729697593To be fair, it only showed up when consoles across the board has their worst showing since November of 1997 or so.>>729697830I'd have been pretty interested to see more use of the idea of scanning in items to use. Or it picking up your fingers like a gun or something.
Nobody wants to stand up in front of a tv for any bullshit scanning or waggling, there was nowhere else better to go with the concept except dancing
>>729698403>Nobody wants to stand up in front of a tv for any bullshit scanning or wagglingI'm almost positive you could use this to sit down and play games too. Like racing games for example. you could play Forza Motorsport 4 while sitting down and even using a wheel peripheral. Kinect being used for headtracking capabilitieshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ua8pFjRMqkNot saying Kinect was amazing or without its problems, just that it had potential that unfortunately was never realized since everyone (mostly hardcore gamers) looked at it as just an Eyetoy. Similar to how people assumed the only way to play Wii games is standing up and flailing around.

Eyetoy did it firstIt was never anything but a novelty
>>729697593they outsold xbox on black friday weekend
Too imprecise to be any better than a regular cotroller
Remember that E3 kinectimals presentation?https://youtu.be/Va-NXzhciVM
>>729697230it didn't even work
>>729699779pretty cool

>>729697230fuck microshit for buying up all depth camera companies and shuttering them, then proceeding to market the same device several times with various bullshit that gets in the way of actually using the fucking thing.depth cameras have a lot of good uses, vidya isn't one of themt. researcher that used kinects extensively (because there was no alternative)
Reminder that the reason why Xbox doesn't have any kind of features like motion, haptic triggers, little microphones in the controllers or whatever is directly because of the reaction they got from this. They learned gamers don't like anything that rocks the boat or does much outside of what has worked for 40+ years (which is also why you see the constant shitting on Nintendo whenever they did anything with Switch 2 being an exception since it basically does nothing new). Nintendo had to learn that with the Wii U too. If they wanted Kinect to be successful, they should have shown it's capabilities outside of the Xbox conference and shouldn't have made it part of the Xbox brand. Instead, maybe they could have given it shown it off with how you can play certain games on Windows PCs at the time with it or how you could use it to help with "smart home" stuff or tying it to your smart TV so you could control it, turn it on, flip through channels, etc without a remote, shown off it's modeling capabilities, head tracking or whatever else this could do.Core gamers are not tech enthusiasts. They see the Kinect and they just see the Eyetoy. Core gamers do not care about the latest technologies at CES, they don't care about gadgets and they don't care about peripherals. Core gamers want a regular console with nicer graphics than last gen, a regular controller and a few games in established, 3rd party franchises they can play games on. That's it. Xbox just found that out at the worst time where digital libraries started to matter and people literally were buying PS4s in protest of how bad Xbox One was from PR and all else.
>>729697230Dragon ball was fun
>>729701416
>>729697230It was fucking spy ware you retard that was the biggest concern the fact it was forced with every xbox made be worried as hell
>>729697230>has 10% of your console's already limited resources dedicated to itself just in case you wanna use itah yes i love my 720p30 video games
>>729697230>he doesn't know its sole purpose was to train motion-detecting algorithms for AI and the military
>>729702714Your phone already does that shit by virtue of having a built-in GPS, camera, audio recording, and the potential for endless apps.I'm not going to argue that the Kinect being built into the Xbox One was a good idea, but the concerns about privacy were fucking laughable next to smartphones.
where is he, pete?
>>729702953>I'm not going to argue that the Kinect being built into the Xbox One was a good idea, but the concerns about privacy were fucking laughable next to smartphones. Not to mention that Amazon's Alexa smart speakers were taking off and were very successful.
>>729700428don't we have pretty good software for capturing poses and depth for people without a depth camera these days?
>>729699779the only thing i remember about it is the sheer amount of porn /v/ churned out of this
>>729703750i do imaging research, and i've been recently thinking about ways to do that.it's really important to try and work with smartphone hardware because that has the lowest cost and widest userbase for entering the market.unfortunately, cameras are pretty shit for doing this for a variety of reasons.that doesn't stop people from trying and spitting out substandard results. of course, if you make something a magic black box and slap "AI powered" on the side of it, 90% of the world gobbles it down like the output was handed down by god itself
>>729697230Hardware was actually really good. Software was shit.
>>729704024true, but the usb 3.0 shit barely worked at the time
I think it's kind of hilarious that Xbox got outsold by it's own concept in the Nex Playground which is just a glorified Kinect
>>729706080It got outsold in one weekend, that thing has sold like 800,000 unkts so far
>>729697593This is going to be serious competition for Nintendo.
>>729697230>nobody really wanted to develop games for it>shitty fable game>shitty yong conker gamethe problem was the reverse
The hardware was great and was the one thing that made the console different but once they doubled downed on always online they were done. Killing the kinect later really sealed the deal
Why didn't they just incorporate it into normal controller gameplay, like your using controller but making a wipe your face hand movement causes it to wipe your visor in the game or if you lean left or right it leans in the game
I actually used the voice controls a lot.
>>729697230Alexa look up the price of a KinectCortana save a screenshotOkay google, where is the nearest best buyXbox record that
>>729701416this is true.Sony has largely been successful by being late to every advancement. letting others push boundries. the only thing that defined each sony generation was their ability to play media. ps1 - CDs, ps2 - DVDs, ps3 - BluRay, ps4 - Netflix, ps5 - Netflix.not having a dvd player killed the dreamcast.knowing that sony flourished being a media player made the mockery towards xbox one for trying to be a media device seem tone deaf. Do sony fans still buy used games? was trading games with friends ever a legitimate selling point, especially when the ps4 generation pushed nearly everything digital.
